Title: Mini seires coasters from japan
Post by: G-DEMP on January 25, 2021, 10:40:35 am
Hi everyone,
I have acquired some plans for the M.V. mini luck ( now renamed the "Sea Nass" ) she was built in 1969 and is a small shallow draft twin screw mini bulk carrier / multi cargo ship ( coaster ) of around 3000 tons. She was the first in the "mini series" ( I believe around 20 vessels of this design were built ) they were quite popular in the 70's and in later years often seen chartered by the UN for relief work. They were also popular island supply boats for the shallow waters of the Caribbean.

Has anyone ever built a model from the Jim Pottinger plans or have any information regarding the "Mini" series of bulkers from Japan.

Thanks in advance

Dave.

Hello RST, yes that's me.  This forum seems to be a little bit busier and I'm just trying to find out as much info as I can.  I am interested to see if another model has been built from these plans. I realise they are quite ugly little ships but I'll be surprised if I am the first to model one.

Bit of a shame you've not had more response on this on here but I for one have been watching the build on modelboats forum.

I like these kind of boats (not quite big enough or debatable to call a ship).  Being brought up metricated but not fully I still struggle between tons and metric Tonnes though the size and shape I get.

You are making a good job of it so far anyway though I think when people mentioned "stringers" we all thought battons at the chines rather than inbetween.  I saw mention of bulkheads also but can't see any on your build so far?  I would stick with ply sheeting -don't use foam blocks on the bow -ply should bend easy enough at your size of things if you orientate the grain according to the curvature.
Good luck with it anyway, nice to see it coming along.
