I'm looking to replace my Ikea swivel chair as no matter how often I service it the creaking returns. The seat and back are typical IKEA plywood and it becomes hard on the derriere too.
Recommendations..................... :-) over and above a cushion! {-)

What height do you work at? My work surface is at the height of a kitchen unit and I managed to find a very solid but old telephonist chair like this one

My bench height is 800mm I tend to use 520mm seat height.

It's unfortunate that at the moment it is difficult, if not impossible, to visit somewhere and try them out but this is one product where you pays your money etc. Cheap flimsy ones don't last long.

Is it sensible or possible to recommend a chair? I would never buy a chair without having sat on it first.
I am tall & I would definitely choose a different chair to my wife who is a lot shorter. On the basis that I often need to stand to work I would also choose a work surface of a different height.
Being physically bigger & heavier (rather too much heavier) also changes what is comfortable to sit on.
I like a comfortable chair that is the right height and I would choose to have a swivel of some sort. I also find that castors lets me adjust how far I am from the work easily.
I am not sure how I would buy a chair that I would be happy with in lockdown.

I still have my old Draughtsman's chair that I hung onto when I retired , it's very handy as it goes up and down to suit my work position. Trouble is that it is showing it's age and getting threadbare same as me . wonder which of us will hit the skip first ?

They do but they don't sell them in budget friendly shops. Think £500+ (& probably double that + ) for a top quality operators chair.

Yes, castors definitely and I like to have arms as well. Given the size of your workshop Andy, I reckon you need provision for an outboard motor as well!
Unless you need one urgently it might be better to wait until you can try before you buy, it's a very personal item and you can only really judge the quality by handling it.

The kids and wife have bought Ikea chairs and gaming chairs on line, very rarely do they last very long, I bought one from PC world years ago and it still serves my needs at this PC, the workshop has a standard metal framed chair that neither lifts or rotates (sounds like a bra advert), it came with a metal bunk bed futon combination for one of the kids room, the wife has many a time asked for me to replace the computer chair and I refuse, it has garden chair and an Ikea cushion on it to relieve the posterior.
They purchased a really good leather chair at the wifes work after she bought it to help with her back after the Ikea ones were hurting her (and actually her work mates) i.e. they refunded her and then bought several more as they were really good, but no good as a workshop chair.
Baldrick, the thread bare nature of your chair is not a problem, just have made a beret style cover made to suit the seat out of a similar of more hard wearing material, with a thread edging line that found on jogging pants the cover can be made to stay on (rotating is not an issue) and washing/replacing it could be done without much effort.

I also like arms but beware that they don't force you further from you work by hitting something if you get too close.

Another reason to try before you buy. On mine they are more in the nature of open frame elbow rests in hard plastic set fairly well back. However, in my rather narrow workshop the high chair back can sometimes catch items on the shelf behind.

Platex had a statement of lift and seperate, rotating a bra is when you use the movement on a cup similar to unscrewing a light bulb O0 , but she has to agree to you doing it first O0 ;D

This is my chair from Staples which I have had for five years. The arm design has changed slightly, mine are cut away more at the front. It still works fine although I don't spend a huge amount of time in the workshop. Plenty of adjustment.

I've bought the one in my last post. Since posting that link he's sold five more. The price is the best on the web and a fraction of the cost of a new one. If it is as described the wife will have one also.

Maybe it just me, but I have a stool that my dad
pinched acquired from the school he was teaching at, perfect for me. I also managed to pinch acquire from the school I was teaching at before I retired, its a bit higher, but perfect for my granddaughter as we are the same height when sitting at the bench now O0 O0 O0
