Title: Unknown Vessel - Assumed RN?
Post by: derekwarner on February 20, 2021, 08:11:30 am
Any thoughts or light on what this vessel is?  :o  ...........

Is it too early for a nuclear washdown?

Could it be one of the aircraft carrier aircraft maintenance ships like Unicorn or Perseus? They were different to the standard aircraft carrier by having extra equipment and structures on the deck.

Possibly a converted Colussus or Majestic class

She spent her last years in Chatham Dockyard.

HMS Triumph, Colossus class light fleet carrier. Launched November 1944, served in Korea then as a Cadet training ship. Took part in first trials of angled flight deck then ended training duties in 1955. Converted to heavy repair ship between 1956 and 1965, in reserve at Chatham in 1975 till finally scrapped in 1981.

Ahha....thanks.....I suspected neuclear washdown, but hadn't heard of a pre-wetting  :o ..... does it mean getting wet before you steam into a yellow cloud?

...& what are those Sailors doing out on the Stern-Quarterdeck?

In the commentary fro John WE's thread.....not quite sure if I agree about question of salt/freshwater?..........just copious quantity of seawater

It’s easier to wash off a substance like radioactive dust or chemicals if the surface is already wet as it’ll flow off quicker when washed again. It’s pre-cautionary action in case of a known possible attack using weapons like these.

The dog class tug RMAS Mastiff was fitted with it, the idea being in a nuclear emergency at Chatham. The crew sailed her up by the nuclear complex, ty her up and leave her with main engines running and the water sprayers on. Trouble is if the alarm went off which way would they go on the toots out of Gillingham gate or steam towards the possible leak!!!

Triumph was based at Singapore for a number of years before eventually returning to UK for disposal. My eldest brother had 18months unaccompanied on her before her world tour cruise home, his boast was dumping 7 million quids worth of new stores over board from her in the bay of Biscay. Remember in Chatham several skips off brand new socket spanner sets being taken away for scrap, as most of the stores were consumable stores so they could not be taken back into Naval Stores.

In the late 80's, a US vessel in Middle Eastern waters experienced a Guided Missile Launcher failure.........normally we in OZ would never hear of such things, however the US put out a DEF Nav Alert, & we had three such Launchers on our RAN Destroyers.....so the bearing that failed was replaced on many 100's of vessels that used that Launcher, worldwide

Upshot of this was the US Technical Enquiry determined the bearing failure was by exceeding it's End of Use date and a very poorly worded Alert caused a very expensive confusion by who should have known better  >>:-( viewed this as every bearing [even in storage] that had exceeded it's End of Use date as to be scrapped

Even at GID, many, many trolley loads of new sealed bearings that had an EOU Date were scrapped

The Alert should have nominated bearings that had exceeded their design cycles..

It seems an endemic problem not confined to the UK.!!!!

These sorts of conversions interest me as it makes an otherwise less interesting* vessel something more unique, like the LSTs converted to Air control and training vessels loaded with Radar and aerials that can be made to revolve. A model like this can have loads more superstructure details added plus little vignettes of loaded and unloaded crates and bits that need repairing or fabricating.

STOP!

*I'm not suggesting Carriers are boring, just that in many cases sourcing model aircraft and the like is expensive and time consuming.

Carry on!
