Is Wickstead park still running ?

Good question!
I'll ask our secret agent Nick to see what's what with Wicksteed Park.... :-))

Hi everyone
I’m in the process of finding out what the guidelines will be or potentially be as the lockdown restrictions are eased (obviously depending on the data and dates that the government provide of course). I’m currently deployed for a month but trying to get hold of the park liaison officer as we speak. The park is okay and has survived due to lottery money and donations being kindly given to the park. I don’t know whether it’ll be the same weekend as we as a country will not be 100% certain of large group meetings until it’s announced as it’s definitely happening. I’ll give the original dates and ask for what they perceive to be okay ones in case but I’m just saying that I don’t expect the May weekend to be 100% do-able until we know for certain.
-
Right then
I’ve contacted the park and yes we can have Model Boat Mayhem at Wicksteed this year but I’ll need to zoom call or telephone call the liaison officer next week to get the latest information on what is going on, how it can be done, and when of course. If the original weekend is the date we go for just be aware that restrictions will still be in place and encompass the park in general so some careful planning would have to occur. If we go for after the magic June 21st date (provided government advice doesn’t change) planning will be easier for us and more people will be able attend. So watch this space and I’ll find out what the park plans and advice/recommendations will be.
-
Top man! :-))
-
I'd go for later to reduce the chances of issues with restrictions and increase the chances that everyone will have had their first jab, and many will be on course to have had their second thus making everyone that bit safer even within legal guidelines.
Its not like we have lots of engagements we have to alter as we are still playing it by ear across the board.
It would be great to see some model boating friends again and recharge the enthusiasm batteries.
Thanks to Nick for doing this while still working on our 'Hercs'.

Well done Nick :-))

Hi Nick,Hope your discussions with Wicksteed are productive. I'm involved in activities with a number of shows & events (other hobbies) with a load of dates under discussion from July onwards. It seems sensible to be looking at dates that fall between July and mid September (before we get into autumn).I'm sure that supporters of Mayhem at Wicksteed would understand if you shoot for a date later in the year than normal.I wish you every success in your negotiations. All the best.Steve Dean.

Good thinking Steve

Hi everyone
Thanks for all the support and recommendations. Just finished speaking to the park liaison officer and we have several options for dates-
Due to several restrictions which we have to assume will still be in force until the government confirms either way the park will re-open grandly on May 28 but it’s currently restricted to how many people they can have in the park.
The obvious thing will be to have the event after June 21st so we have less restrictions under the current advice. The park have recommended any weekend in July and the first two weeks in August. The August bank holiday is fully booked for massive events that’ll hopefully make the park money such as comedy night and 80s groups singing live. September is also currently fully booked by other events that’ll take capacity over.
We will know more information after March 29 when further government advice is due to be given on the subject.
The campsite will be open after June 21st provided nothing changes.
So let me know which weekend is preferable and I’ll send them off to the park to see if they are okay with the date.
-
Many thanks Nick for all your work, my personal opinion I would be happy with the end of July beginning of August (assuming they will let me back into the country.......and I don't have to pay import duties on the boats {-) {-) )
Happy to go with the majority and we are all safe :-))
-
Hi Nick
thank you for your help. August sounds good. I can see when venues are allowed to reopen they will book fast.

The Mayhem crew are still on this......looking at dates.

Hi All
Are there any updates on this?
Please avoid the 21 & 22nd August as this is the southern model show at Headcorn.
Regards
Derek

Hi Derek having checked with Martin it would appear this may not be going ahead.

Was that this weekend? It looked like 2018.
-
They are pulling your leg Ian!
Mayhem at Wicksteed was supposed to be this weekend but due to current restrictions we couldn’t put it on until after June 21st. We are looking for a mini-Mayhem may be in September depending on restrictions and what the park can fit us in their very busy schedule. Fingers crossed. :-))
-
Hi everyone
It was a beautiful weekend that we were robbed of! The sunshine was brilliant sailing weather and we did have a social distanced gathering for Wicksteed 100, the begining of the centenary celebrations of the park and the first sailing meet at Wicksteed. I intend to have a write up for the magazine to show the boats on display and the park hope to have a similar event for 2022 so everyone can see what it looked like. Obviously it would have even better with the Mayhemer's in attendance over the weekend but the current restrictions said we couldn't. But there is hope ahead and we have definately got May 2022 to look forward to and back to normality with vertical Northamptonshire mist included ;)

Tis true, I was stuck in France, our boys from the North were stuck in Glasgow, mayhems all over locked in strange area's, Nick, Steve and the wicksteed boys still having fun with out us and Klunk stuck in his attic workshop.....But really great looking back at a hot sunny Mayhem (and be fair there are not many of them {-) {-) {-) {-) ) Till the next one....Oh and Stav, I have a new straight runner with brushless motor and Lipo's (whatever they are) and a scary new steam boat.....be afraid... O0 Bring on Mayhem :-)) :-)) :-))

Hi Andy,
Now the cats out of the bag regarding Martin's 'Mayhem 2021' shenanigans -
(apparantly local modelers did attend Wicksteed Parks 100th centenary celebrations with a small display of yachts),
I can reply with a sadly resounding no regarding boats at the moment.
My PolyC is forcing me to shield until I can get a full antibodies test - to find out if the vaccines had any effect?
with the illness its highly likely I'll have little or no protection against the dreaded.
I've moved back to the 'Dark Side' - aero's vintage gliders for the foreseeable future,
because I can operate or rather crash them, in isolation, in fields walking distance down the lane,
keeping well away from lakes / people, especially my local lake in good old 'Covid Central' Leicester !
I keep a watchful eye on Mayhem and your interesting mix of alternating construction techniques -
I've still not mastered plastic card - another reason for lack of progress on the Tug !
the cab was to be my first experiment with it - and to date efforts to stick it have failed.
regards Paul.
-
Thanks for the update Paul. Good luck with whatever you do.
Don't give up on the plasticard it really is easy but use ZAP CA rather than solvent cement which is far too slow.
Alternatively tac it with CA then follow up with styrene cement on the completed structure.

Very much looking forward to the possibility of a mini Wicksteed, especially as I now live 10 minutes down the road :-))
