Title: Amerigo Vespucci Panart 1/84 by Kevin started 2008
Post by: kevin547n on March 07, 2021, 08:28:05 pm
good evening everyone

i have been a member on here for quite some time and have started several logs but never taken them to completion, i will update them and/or have them deleted by the grown ups

i bought this kit in 2008 and built up the hull and then put it on the shelf of doom for many years, basically i bought the Caldercraft Victory and that took priority

last June i finished the St Nectan by Moutfleet and restarted this for a few months until another project came along and then another

in 2008 she looked like this

August last year

and now
 :embarrassed:

Well, looks like this is going to be quite a handsome model - to build to completion does place demands on your time - block off the 'shelf of doom' (love that description) and store away your other part-builds.

Hope you can keep this thread going - Cheers!

Ray.

Thanks for sharing :-))

Gobsmacked!

Lovely job on the trawler and that's quite a short build time in my view O0

(I'm not renowned for my speed, but get there eventually)

Good evening everyone

looked long and hard at the build, i seem to be haunted by the wanting to get on with her or cutting my loses and going for a large scale clipper, im not bored with her, just not 100% happy with the way she looks, even if its far better than first time around

my options to convert her to something different, are limited/ non existant, so i will continue with her but deviate away from the norm and do it my way,

first choice is to bin the buff colour, i have been using Admiralty paints yellow ochre this will now be olive green,

lol i dont suppose it will make me very popular with the purists, but they aint seen any of my builds

this is my experimenting with the upper air ports in part of the new colours

all the upper portholes and airports have now been fitted, and the recessed rivets have been replaced, i hope to have all the upper works in green tomorrow, then decide if i like it or not, otherwise i will rip it all off and restart

im struggling tonight getting the balcony panels to fit, - yes i mixed them up in error (schoolboy error) the instructions didnt do anything to help the situation, although im not blaming them

Sir, you are a master of the craft.  Stunning work.  I am amazed.  Question, are your large models in cases and if so, where to you put them.  I am running out of room in my little home.  Its starting to look like a maritime museum.  Just curious.  Have always wanted to build that model of the Vespucci ....... Wow, what a project.  Tks for sharing.  Best regards from across the pond.  Dennis

non of my builds are  covered, and therefore open to the dust, But i will be building a dedicated display area this summer, the reason for not having done so far, is that i have only been building for 10 years and now have a few builds to justify it
The Victory and St Nectan are  the first to go in

Well, I applaud your work.  With only 10 yrs into it, I'm certain you will produce a large fleet as time moves along.  My largest cased model is of an English Frigate, which has a place of honor in our living room.  Pic attached.  Dennis

very nice indeed

i dont use my garage any more, not even for boat building so the intention is to use an area, 3.5mx1.5mxheight of sloping roof, and glaze a stud wall,

good evening everyone
after deck awning stanchion
the instructions, say 40mm bend 5mm and hammer flat the last 2mm and drill  1mm hole in the flat bit x 12
must be a better way, so i took 35mm bend 5 and added a pintle on the end by soldering x 12, these will be added to the build this week, lol i see so many snag hazards later on with the rigging, im going to curse this so very much

i dont know what these look out posts are called, but again i have replaced gluing with soldering, there is not a lot of room for them, i will have to shorten the hand rail by a couple of mm

on the lower part of the mast there is a coller  and 4 holes need to be drilled into it, and  pintles inserted  through which a wire hoop is fitted, this has hooks hanging from it an supports the cope coils from the pin rails  (Just below the awning)

the radar according to the kit is hung below  main top in fact it is not and forms part of the planform
also other things are changing as i go along like extra holes on the top for lines to pass through

Gasp! You have a proficient eye for detail and the skill to implement.
St Nectan is a beauty and Amerigo Vespucci takes my breath away with your detailed work.

Retirement - isn't it good..! I started my first and only build in early 2016 and I still fear that I'm not going to sail this year despite retirement last year and lock-down...

i wish at times this was the Victory, i have as much time on the AV as i like, where as the Victory was weekend and holidays, it was suggested that i strip her back again and rework the rigging and put sails on

Good evening everyone
over the last couple of days the build table has been busy, the foremast lower sections are now complete i think, i keep finding new bits to scratch and add, the radar assembly requires a cage around it so i fabricated one, far better than the kit callout
today the main parts of the  bowsprit were made up on the lathe to fit the brass fittings

good evening everyone

most of the foremast has been conpleted, there is enough for ,e to work out where the bowsprit rigging will go to

the bowsprit although not 100% complete is coming together, i am trying to make it look more realistic than the kit allows

Just amazed at your skill and attention to detail.  What's to say about the green (I like it).... the purist will always have something to say if you don't follow the rules.  I built my "Ajax" English Frigate" per plan and kit.  It was not until later that there was a bunch of noise out on the forums that the "Ajax" never existed.  I decided just to not name my model and only call her a representation of an typical English Frigate.  Made me feel better.  In the end. You are the builder.  I decided that I want to donate 5 of my US Aircraft Carrier models to a nearby US Naval Air Station.  Being ex-Navy, I would be proud if they would accept them.  Waiting for an answer.   Too many models, not enough room.    Take care,  Dennis

Confirmed and correct, modern day steel frigate "Ajax".  Also, there is record of an English Frigate "Ajax" of 1810-1864.  My comment was based on discussions several years ago, while I was building the model "Ajax" that there was question as to her existance.  I made the decision to not name my model, but just show her as an example of a military version of a typical English Frigate of 1850.  Dennis

You know, the plans for the "Ajax" might work for that model.  They were noted to be one of the finest produced.  Sadly, I did not save my set.  Wonder if you can buy just the plans or even if the kit is still made.  Was it a Euro kit?  Too long ago.  Dennis

Ok, here you go: https://forum.game-labs.net/topic/3058-hms-ajax-british-frigate-with-plans/   this link will bring back all the ugly comments about the "Ajax"...... now I know why I did not name my model.  It was the Euro kit and those are "some" of the plans provided in the kit.  It was difficult to build, took me 3 yrs., but did produce a nice model in the end.  Dennis

Hope they go well anyway  :-)

Morning Dennis,

Intentions are for all sails and hand made rope, but will be using crappy kit blocks, although the ones i just bought are far better than the ones supplied in this kit
i need over 400 of them and did not want to pay nearly 30 pence each
i am following another build and looks like this

Nice, Kevin.... I have done sails like that using "silkspan", wife did the sewing, aged sails with wood stain, etc.  As for blocks, I do understand, the good ones are very expensive.  Kit supplied wood blocks can be "softened" or edge rounded by making a small drum sander out of a tin can, using a drill motor with find sandpaper and lightly tumbling the blocks to "round" the edges.  Or, you can make your own of course.  A mixture of furled and unfurled sails helps, as a full suite of sails  does hide a ton of detail in the rigging, etc.  Choices, choices... no matter which way you go, your model will be and is already, a stunner.  thanks for sharing the build.   I did build one clipper ship model, Makay's "Flying Cloud".... took me 3 and a half years. A challenge.  Cheers :-))   Dennis

Good evening @dlancast
thank you for the compliments
i now have a decent rigging plan hence the pin rails have increased from the kit 7 belaying pins to 19 or 20
not sure on the material for the sails, i will experiment over the next month or so, paper seams to be an option
losing detail is always going to be an issue with about 30 sails
biggest issue i face meanwhile is making my own rope in upto 8+ different sizes and then what size to put where

good evening everyone
over the last week i have been ensuring everything fits and works as it is meant to,ie that most of the brackets and blocks etc will be in the right place
so yesterday i salvaged the chains, painted them and set them in place, they look ok to me, time will tell if they are actually where they need to be
over the next week i am going to plan the new display area in the garage and learn to use the Domanoff ropewalk

good evening everyone

i have two weeks left before we possibly have visitors, and all my big builds are taking to much room in the house

the garage used to be the mancave, but once we got the dog, it was better i moved into the conservatory, so the garage is going to be into the display area, the wood arrives tomorrow, and a large cabinet 2.3m x 1m x height is planned

cabinets moved around and top cut down in size

as for the build i am making progress albeit very slowthis morning i made up 6 lengths of rope in two different sizes on the ropewalk, some soldering and shaping some blocks, i wish i knew the names of some of the lines i am putting in but the dropbox info i have is in Geman and all goobygook to me[size=78%]

As always, fantastic work sir.  Sure do know about running out of space thing.  After much consideration, I have decided to donate my collection of WW2 aircraft carriers (U.S.) to a nearby Naval Base.  They have responded to my offer and the one handling such things came by last week to view the models and was very impressed.   He said the process has to go through many depts., so it will take a long time before anything happens.  If it does, it will do this old Navy Vet's heart good to know that my models will be viewed and appreciated.  I am always curious what folks do with their models in later years.  They are works of art in my humble opinion.  Built on!  Cheers  ;)  Dennis

my builds are not good enough to sell or give away IMHO but i enjoy what i do and they need somewhere better, the new cabinet will take three or four of them which will be a great help
