My big question regards these super luxury yachts is how do they handle in really rough seas or do they just act as showpieces in the mill pond of a very large marina ?

I had a read of it using google translate the "sails" are more solar panels than sails ( though they would work as sails their rigid shape means they will be relatively inefficient I'd think ) I'd think you would need to have more money than sense to build it as it's probably in the region of several hundred million quids worth.......

Many many are fair weather only. Theatres of operation can be restricted by insurers, e.g. not in Caribbean during hurricane season. Trans-oceanic transits frequently done piggy-back on specialised commercial vessels. They are not really built to handle what professional mariners would call ‘heavy weather’. The Mirabella V Was the largest single-masted yacht in the world when she was built - the mast was so high (anecdotally) that she couldn’t pass under the Golden Gate Bridge and sails had to be reefed in winds over 15 knots. A recently-built sail-assisted 3-mast mega yacht (mainmast reportedly 105 metres high) has an insured value in excess of 4 hundred million US$ (built for a Russian oligarch). So generally they are expensive play-things for the wealthy see-and-be-seen crowd. That being said, some of them are spectacular looking beasts.

People who own such boats usually have the boats taken across the Atlantic on a super heavy lifter, the ones that semi-submerge. A good mate of mine does nothing else but transport these boats over the oceans. It also saves the owner the costs of fuel etc and the crew usually do the maintanance on the trip. Regards
