Title: Thames barge kits? Or other dual sail/motor type kits?
Post by: clockworks on April 03, 2021, 07:17:42 pm
I fancy building a scale sailing boat with an auxiliary motor, something that can be run on just sails, but with a motor for emergencies and maneuvering. I'd prefer a full kit, either plank on frame or plastic/glass hull.
Something between 750 and 900mm.

A Thames barge seems to fit the bill, but the only full kit I can find is a smaller static model from Billings.

Anything else out there that will look good under sail, but with a motor to fall back on?

Cannot help with that but did you build that lobster boat?

A Robbe Atlantis might fit the bill, it's a schooner with provision for a well mounted outboard. They're long OOP these days, but they do still show up on various sites.

Someone told me that "mastman" had retired, and someone else might be taking over the business at some point?

I'll have a look at the Atlantis kit.

I've not started the lobster boat kit yet. I'm halfway through building a SLEC Swordsman, haven't done any building since before Christmas. Combination of being too cold to be sitting outside sanding, and not being able to get on the water. I've been to the lake twice in the past week, getting some enthusiasm back at last!

I found this today, a 42 inches long hull kit....

It looks interesting. I have made the Billings kit of a Thames barge many years ago, and its very small to motorise or have as a sailing model. Chris

Hi Atlantis is a lovely boat I was offered one 3 years ago but it was just too big, well for me anyway.

Should you see an old Graupner Nordeney fishing boat that sails well.  There is a new Nordeney, ignore that.  I have the fishing boat and the kit includes ready made sails.  My one sails with internal ballast and the drop down keel.  Looks imposing on the water also has an engine.

The Thames barges generally come at 1/2 inch and 1/4 inch scale but Veronica seems a bit in between, also rather heavy to get sailing and many use an extra length keel.  Try AMBO for details of model barges.
You could try a scale yacht like Bella and put a small prop poking out to one side.  I attach a picture of my conversion of the Bella kit to a Gaff rig.I will see if I can find a Nordeney picture sailing.
regards
Roy

This is Norderney in full sail with internal ballast, with such a small keel she needs a little help from the motor when tacking.

Why not build one yourself, most kits that I have seen are really ugly hulls, I have attached a copy of Giraldas hull, which you can modify the Phoenician had a similiar hull and she was a coaster that ended her days as a motor barge.
