Title: Sail control - lubrication of sheets/ cord at fairleads

I'm seeking advice as to whether to lubricate the sheets cord (braided) where this passes through the deck on my Grand Banks Schooner model. If so, what to use? The fairleads are ⅛" brass tubes with model railway point control silicon tubing inserted to prevent water ingress when heeling etc.


The model uses the Sarik Hobbies FRP Hull and Armstrong's plans, with much detail added and being added thanks to Howard Chapelle's excellent tome on American Fishing Schooners.

Hi. I would suggest SP80 it is a spray on silicon lubricatant.  Looks like a WD40 can!
The SP 80 can be used to ease plastic runners supporting cortains has an amazing effect instant easy movement.  Works well on sheets for model yachts, I do the same as yourself and run the sheets in tubes where possible.  My can has lasted years.

Rather than spray silicon lube around, better to squirt a bit into a lid and apply with a brush.

I use PTFE fishing ferrules pushed into the ends of brass tubes at deck level -
'Polemaster Super Slick Internal Bungee Bushes' available in many sizes
mine happen to be 2.3mm I.D 3.5mm O.D. a good push fit in K&S Ali tube - couple of quid from the local tackle shop.

Wonder if anyone has tried Teflon cycle lubricant? I have some from Halfords and using it would save a few bob in not having to order up some SP90!!

Not reason at all why it shouldn't work.  I used to dab a drop of 3 in 1 on the appropriate area.  It just needs something to minimise friction and discourage water ingress.
