Title: My favorite RC boating scenes at our local lake
Post by: Backerther on April 08, 2021, 03:21:42 pm
Hi RC model boaters;
I have been enjoying RC boating at our local lake 11km away from my home for many years up to
October two years before.Since then,we have been unable to do that due to the flood by typhoon and covid-19. <:( >>:-( >:-o
However the restoration work of the lake is supposed be complete through this May when we may restart the
long -waited boating again with many members.!! %% :D
Today to begin with  I will post to introduce my boats I have built or modified.
Details and my favorite boating scenes to come later.

That's one heck of a lake, it goes for MILES by the look of it!  :o

Nice boats you have there too.  :-))

Hi KitS;
A great thanks for your very kind comment.! :D
Yes, it is actually so large enough for our RC boating that it looks like an OCEAN for the RC boats. {-)
This is 3km long and 0.27km wide so that once it became one of the candidate sites for the boat races
of Tokyo Olympic Games. But luckily we are now able to use for our RC boating as it is,as evaluated to
require a tremendous amount of money to modify suiting for an official boat racing waters.
As a result,some water sports other than RC boating are permitted here to enjoy like the wind surfing, canoeing
and row boating,etc. O0 ♪~♬~♪~♫~
1;A bird-eye view of our boating site.The place actually we use is central upper water above the small bridge
  on right shore.
2/3;Our club boating scenes in the mid summer.
4;On the too hot day in the mid summer..
5;A member's steam ship sailing powerfully this day
6;My HMS Fencer passing by one another in the opposite direction at about 4-50m off the shore
  at slow speed.. {-)
7;In the windy day of the mid-winter,my Jupiter F-99(1m long)powered by 2200KV brushless water-cooled
  went suddenly into waves fiercely in the very wavy water.The bow went into the water at the moment which I
was so surprised. {-) %%
I am calling the sailing in the wavy water in winter "Adventure sailing in the winter" %%

But, of course, it is not sooo interesting to operate the boat in such a windy day as naturally the boat sometimes
  is influenced by the wind rather than my electric waves of the transmitter, though not to say "out of control". {-)

Hi RC model boaters;
The pics for today are of my luxury cabin cruiser Poseidon(ex-Bright sun named by the ARTR manufacture) modified
mainly at around cabin fittings and air flow window to cool better inside the enclosed hull in addition to the brushless motor water cooled.
This is about 1m long and very fast for a cruiser type boat,and very silent even at higher speed.
Drain of the cooling water is made from the both sides of the hull to cool the hot motor and ESC effectively.
For this purpose,water ingress is from the two hole around the rudder.
And I realised a harem aboard the boat as this is a luxury cabin cruiser. O0 {-) %%
1;At anchor
2/3/4;Onboard harem of my own dream only realised by 1/25 scale.. {-) %%
5;Air intake window
6;Air outlet doors
7;Sailing scene in which a cheerful,sharp and noisy voice of many beauties could be heard... {-)

 Watch the video of the Poseidon sailing fast leaving the wakes sharply as if enjoying the mid-summer sea cruising..

Hi RC model boaters;

Pics for today on my Poseidon are just comparisons on some points,or so called "before and after". %%
1;This is a pic of the real boat.
2;While this one possibly at 1/25 of my boat in early stages of modifications.
3/4;After delivery stage
5;One of modifications,left ingress I added was only for ESC cooling,right by manufacture for the motor and ESC, now used only for the motor.
  These are,of course, intended to cool and circulate the water better ,effectively by the independent water flows.
  The cooling water is coming out from the both egresses powerfully by the independent water flows as seen in the
previous video,just as seen in high speed racing boats.
6/7;Repainted to get a traditional and gorgeous atmosphere by this navy blue. {-) O0

Hi RC model boaters;
Pics for today of my Poseidon are of mid-winter boating scenes.
It is normally slightly over O degee C here in Tokyo at the coldest which may be too warm as compared with London,UK..??
So I make it a practise to sail the RC boats even in the mid-winter.
The biggest obstacle is the very strong north wind sometimes blown up on the lake and I normally give it up to sail the boat when such a wind blows faster than 4m/s or more.The boat could be apt to lose her autonomy on the fierce waves under such tremendous wind.
1;"Well,then should we start the boating as it's too fine for the mid-winter with no wind, though cold instead!"
2;Started leaving a wide V-shaped wake at slow speed...
3;Snow capped Mt.Fuji and my Poseidon and....
  Mt.Fuji is about 110km away from here, but it could be seen normally in the mid-winter as the sky becomes so clear
  in this season..and "disappears" in the spring and beyond.
4;Poseidon is so slowly and calmly approaching the waterfowls but never they noticed until Poseidon came up to around
 1m to them.!!!They flew away only a fraction of a second to the approaching. {-) %%

Hi RC model boaters;
Pics for today are the RC boats in the nature of mid-winter that will make us feel seasonal features positively.
1;A piece of pic that shows typically one scene of silence of the cold mid-winter...blue sky,white Mt.Fuji,green bank and..
my Poseidon at anchor on a comparatively calm surface...
2/3;My Poseidon and member's steam ship sailing on so chilly a surface that is expressed clearly by the color of the deep blue water.... %%

Hi RC model boaters;

On the contrary,these are the pics taken in the mid-summer at our local lake.
It's too HOT here every summer as usual getting to 38 degree C which is rather dangerous if we
operate the boats for a long time in the sun.
In this sense, summer umbrellas are indispensable for us whenever we operate the RC ships in this season.

The Japan coast guard ship is 1.8m powered by  twin water jets.

Hi RC model boaters;
Pics for today are to be entitled "The collaborations"as the model boats are sailing in a formation,together with
a standing boater, and 1/10 Jeep wrangler beside the RC boat all of which were taken in the day of mid-spring.
It was so cheerful to spend the time operating RC models sufficiently under a little bit hot spring in April.
However, around this season seems the best to enjoy the RC model operations here in Tokyo...not so hot,not so cold!!.. %%
When other boaters are enjoying their models on the water,I sometimes go around this area driving my 1/10 RC crawlers
for a while to take a rest ? My collaboration of both the RC boat and RC vehicle?? All day long is the RC operation time?? {-)

Hi all;
I have been to our boating lake today to check how it is now as it was reopened two days ago to the public,according to
the website in charge.This is much earlier than what was previously displayed in the bulletin on the site I saw many days ago. {-) %%
And I found a very nice water conditions for RC boating as the water level was completely restored as it had been about 1.5
years before except one thing.That is,our waterfront was still barricaded by the ropes which was rather contradictory
to the announcement  in the website.!! >>:-( What should we do with these ropes? The workers on the site forgot to retrieve them from there?? I want to believe so.!!! %%
1;This is completely OK for RC boating !! :-))
2;The water level is full.The width may have been about 275m.!!as in the map.
3;The opposite shore is seen like this 275m away from here.
4;Our boating water area is seen like this from the nearest bridge.The red colored barricades can be seen... >:-o
5;Even many doves look so welcoming this conditions cheerfully ,watching so seriously the surface not escaping from me at all.!! {-)

Hi all;

We are entering into what we call"Golden week" to start from 29th through 6th May,one of the longest holidays here in Japan.
During this periods,people in general spend as their own ways ,mainly as to go on a trips by cars or trains to enjoy a such long vacations,what is better,the weather is normally good to do whatever they like.!! {-) %%
However,covid-19 is severely standing high in front of us as if to have prevented from doing such things ,
based upon the policies of our government not to go outdoors for fear that they may come across closely in the crowded cities or towns.... <:( {:-{
But,our lake side is nevertheless rather vacant normally even in this periods since they go out other places for their recreations,as this lake is rather near enough to come anytime they wish. %%
I may carry this old flag ship to the lake for the very first run in this year.The modified Jupiter F-99 brushless motor water cooled,99cm long,42 years old still in completely in service, revived with the change of powerplant from 60 class 2 stroke glow engine made by Enya brand.
1;Neatly checking before starting!
2;Ready and go, wishing her a safe return here with no trouble on the large surface..... {:-{
3/4/5;Cruising magnificently on the water as my flag ship... {-) %% O0 not so extremely fast...as a scale boat..

hi ya Ray, long time no see as you say

I am unsure about Tynemouth Club but South Shields Club are going to try and re-open on 23 May and they are going to try and fit in as many competitions and fixtures as possible throughout (with a bit of luck) .   I think they may run the N.E. 2 day event and, if they do, it may be over at Tynemouth Lake - all unofficial yet though - unless you know different to me.

If it is held over at Tynemouth I will be over there to see some happy faces, hopefully.

Does that parrot still fly around the lake?

Hi John, our club secretary keeps us updated on the situation and, so far, we've had to keep to the 6 people limit and one member at a time in the clubhouse, sign in and out, no refreshments, kettle etc.
These restrictions may be eased later next month.

As for me, I've not been to the lake since Jan '20.
Probably be mid-Jun before I start going back - still awaiting 2nd jab.

... and I've not seen the parrot for years.

Anyway, hope we can get things opened up soon...

Take care and stay safe

Regards,
Ray.

Hi all;
I tested yesterday not only my boat to see how she behaved by the new screw props, but also to confirm how the water
conditions were in terms of something like rubbish in which the worst was fishing lines "anchored" or flowing... {:-{ {:-{
Judging from what I observed yesterday,no peculiar rubbish was found fortunately as my boat returned safely in several
rubbish finding cruises. %%
Well then,I may be able to re-start the test run in May of HMS Fencer 1/96 for the best balance sailing that I have intended so far that she should be on the water.If fulfilled in the future as I have desired so,it's my goal for this ship having been built.!

Hi all;
My impressive boating scenes for today taken in spring two years ago are as follows;
It was so calm on the water and in silent  circumstances all over this large park where is our regular
RC operating site regardless of kinds of RC models except RC flying models and glow engine models.
1;I brought these boats this day.
2;This was just a scene towing a rescue line of buoys I had devised for practising to rescue the boat stopped on the water.
3;This was also a rescuing scene by a real helicopter generating stunningly noisy sound of the rotors flying so close to us
   on this day.We took a rest for about two hours during these hours as we were naturally obliged to stop all the activities on the water. O0 O0
4;So calm on the water best suitable to operate RC scale ships O0 %%
5/6;New ship this day for him...

It's in the best season for the RC boating throughout a year and we may be able to do that from this month if we find
 the time to do so. Everything is up to us??? {-)

Hi all;
My small boat of Jupiter P-550 powered by 540 motor brushed modified to water cooled with a coil jacket was replaced
with a new prop to get her faster than ever before.
This 55 cm plastic boat made a remarkable progress on test today by the new prop of 40mmdia with P1.4 as seen below. %%
The speed was clearly faster enough to notice by the eyes and shapes of the wakes and waves generated by the hull. O0
I intended to use this boat as a rescue purpose a couple of months ago, BUT I soon changed my mind into using her as
one of formal vessels of my RC fleet after confirming this result of sailing test.!!
I am firmly convinced that she will do a good job as a formal vessel , not as the mere rescue boat.!! Rank up done !! {-) %%
1;The new prop I adopted this time
2/8;Test run today

The battery used today is NiMH 7.4V 5000mAh ,and cooling water drained sufficiently after cooling the motor, as seen in the pics. %%

Hi all;
My favorite Rc boating scenes by a video and still pics for today are the followings.
The boat is my only one harbor tugboat powered by a brushed 540 Mabuchi motor by which the tugboat runs very well
and powerfully like a real one. While I personally feel she runs rather faster and agile with the motor unlike the real one
and also the waves made by the bow and stern were much more real rather than the boat herself. {-)
Enjoy the video to show the atmosphere of the tugboat like sailing.? {-) %% O0

Hi all;

I just re-painted my smallest RC boat Jupiter P-550 with the original colors of black and white to get her looked
much beautiful than ever before.
I polished the surface of the hull several times to get a better gloss after re-painting.
With this appearance, she is supposed to set out to sailing in this later May as an observation boat of lake conditions to check if something worse is floating, streaming and drifting prior to my star boats. {-) %% O0
She has become over 42 years old perhaps at least so that I applied rather thick make-up on her skin this time to have her viewed much better at the lake side. {-) O0

But,another RC yacht club has already been sailing when I got here,which club members are always so vivid in their activities.
Their boating surface is about 300m or so away from ours.
Silent model ships like these yachts and electric powered boats are only allowed by the administrator of the park. O0
As this lake is just a part of gigantic park in the large city,exceptionally it is allowed for the RC boaters who are strictly
expected not to generate the noisy sounds that cause  other visitors offended.!! O0 ;)
1;Before sailing, the tugboat was checked beside the HMS Fencer. The aircraft carrier and tugboat look well matched. {-) ?
2;Heavily cloudy day this day !! :((
3;Regular members here of a yacht club.!
4;Ready to go !
5;Rear deck was modified to open for the sound speaker inside to be heard largely even at the distant place successfully.
  Moreover 5 holes on top of the funnels were also opened to do the same purpose of the above.
6;Back view
7;Sailing about 30m off the shore like an ocean tug boat in the scene, though she is a mere harbor tugboat,!! {-) %%
8;I'm so satisfied with her safe return from the ocean sailing ? far off the shore this day too.!! %% O0

Hi all;
Once upon a time.. %% though it was only about 1980,my Jupiter F-99 was equipped with a 60 glow engine made by Enya.
But it was rather over-power for her that as soon as a throttle stick was applied to max,she behaved like a flying fish as seen in the pic below.I was terrifically surprised to see her flying off the surface for a fraction of a second..on the comparatively
calm surface of the lake in those days. {-)
1; She was too young around half a year old,and me too young in those days... {-)
2;Like a flying fish for a fraction of a second with a momentary full throttle..by which I was so frightened to see her.! %%
3/4;The brand-new same engine I bought in 2009 as the one installed since 1979.I got this new one for spare but useless
   at this time as a powerful brushless motor is predominant over my RC boats with many advantages in this times.
5;Specifications...practical power 1.45HP and practical RPM of 14500...by which my JupiterF-99 flew momentarily.. %%
6;The very props  by which JupiterF-99 flew...60mm dia.
7;The engine bed plate was modified later to suit for a brushless motor of 2200KV with 1200watts now in service in her.
"The ruins" of screws to fix the engine bed plate were seen on the wood mount...
8;But still powerful by the brushless motor in this rough water with many huge high tri-angled waves surrounding her.!
  It was terribly blowing a north wind with a fearful sound..pyuupyuu.. {-) %%
 But "she is a Jupiter"!! {-) O0 %% No worry at all!! O0
She is,so to speak,a Range Rover or a Jeep of the lake for me.. {-) O0

Hi all;
It was very fine day today here in our local lake with the temperature 27 degrees C and a breeze suitable for
RC boating as well as other water sports.!!! %%
The pics for today has featured 1/32 Lindberg PT-109 powered by two 540 Mabuchi motors.
The sailing is realistic and dynamic just like its real one very much as seen in the following pics.
I like the MTB and assembled it many years ago, but have not run her seriously on this lake so far.
In this sense, this will be actually the first time to run for many minutes.
If possible,I would like to build another Elco MTB again...!! {-) O0
1/2; It's a very fine day for RC boating.!
3;Rc yachting has already been done at neighboring space like this,which group is always so enthusiastic in terms of
 the numbers of both sailings and their participants.
4;Preparing for sailing
5/8;Take a look at the sailing of the PT-109 generating an atmosphere of high speed MTB by the wakes and waves
.! %% O0
Generally speaking,the freeboard of the MTB is so low that it is rather difficult to make a sharp turn at speed.
Turning at speed sharply I think will possibly cause some troubles ,depending upon the conditions of surface... O0

Hi SteamboatPhil;

Thank you so much for a kind comment.!!
This lake is fundamentally and practically at our disposal so far as the users of this lake are having conscience not to
offend or trouble other visitors here with their activities that cause loud noise and sound,etc .... O0
Therefore RC yachting and electric boating(with no loud and noisy sound ) are normally allowed by the authorities in charge implicitly. O0
We are strictly required to keep the implicit rules to continue a happy RC boating in this lake. O0 %%

Hi all;

It was cloudy today but so comfortable to spend the time for RC boating here with far less people than on holidays.
Therefore I have made it a practise to come here on weekday for RC boating as I had retired at 65 years old by which
I could have had 3 holidays in a weekday since then at maximum.The rest 2 days are for part-time job.!! O0 %%
I could come to have enough time to do what I want,which time I have long waited to come.!! {-) {-)
Well then, shall I go to the sailing for today at our local lake.??
1;JupiterP-550 assembled so normally,simply,traditionally with 540 Mabuchi brush motor,5000mAh lipo,
 normal ESC except a modification of water-cooling to the motor only.
2;The prop is 40mm dia with P-1.4 by which she increased much torque and speed than ever before.
  It seems rather fast for this size and scale appearance for me. She showed porpoising sometimes at full speed,but
 will recover at 80 % throttle at which she looks much realistic.!
3;Operating a RC boat on the water is so cheeeeerful ,isn't it!! %% O0
4/5/6/7;Sailing scenes for today.
8;I did it! No,she herself did it well today.!! {-) %% O0

 It has already enter into the RC boating season and our local lake seems to open to the water sports fans publicly in the very near future as the construction works had already done possibly some days before... {-) {-)
So we could go there more frequently than before without any hesitations at all.!!! {-) {-)

PS;I had a very kind advice that I was mistaken about rudder setting.Perhaps the advice is correct and I follow it.
Many thanks!! %%

Hi all;
 My Jupiter F-99(named by the kit manufacturer, formally Neptune renamed by me!)is a Jeep of our lake for me and
has left many impressive photos mostly sailing on the sea-like lake for the RC model boats.
She has I mentioned so far served as a flag ship for about 42 years, the oldest in my fleet still in operation,by which
number of her pics is ranked top in the fleet,needless to say.
Here are some of my favorite and impressive pics of her on the sea, oh no !,lake to be correct.! {-)
I think watching or appreciating the pics of RC model boating scenes is another enjoyment and this will be of some help
to understand or observe how the boats will behave and move on the water, in terms of mostly waves and wakes... O0

Hi all;
It's a reeeaaally fine day today here in Tokyo,and our local lake welcomed by the outside temperature of 30 degrees C with around 1 m/s breeze suitable for RC boating.But due to some reasons,I came up with this little boat despite such a fine
day.!! Next time I come here,I will carry my star boats which have been off the sailing for close to two years due to
corona virus.!! As I found the lake conditions good for RC boating of both scale ships and fast cabin cruisers by today's
observation including circumstances around the lake. %%
Anyhow,we have beeeen obliged to keep off the lake not only by corona but also reconstruction of the lake partly damaged
by the gigantic typhoon up to recent days.... {:-{ {:-{
1;Fine day today for RC boating with so clear and clean water for this season...
2;Then,getting her on the water right away!
3;She sometimes collided against a slight ripple caused by a bit strong wind.. O0
4;So she soon got drenched by such frequent collisions with waves ,though continued cruising powerfully with the tiny
 hull against the waves. O0
5/6; Like these pics, she ran on a bit rough surface...
7; Oh my goodness!! I found this at the parking lot and nodded why she had behaved rather slowly in the final sailing though started with a fully charged battery. {-) O0  I felt something strange in her running in early stage after starting..... O0 O0 {-)
8;Next time,the mother boat of the Jupiter P-550 will possibly come up here if well maintained  for this lake.!

Martin's post 50 shows an old Straight runner.  Prior to RC, the boats were used like darts and aimed at Marker buoys.  They used to get up to quite a speed and the markers were near the bank and someone had to stop the boats.  If you note on the rear deck there is a reverse type water break and this was to stop the stern wave from swamping the boat when it was stopped.
With some of the bigger steam driven boats you would have to stand, in the lake in your waders of course, braced with feet apart ready to stop the boat.  The technique was to grab the bow and push it down, this slowed the boat right down and took the props out of the water for a short time.  Then you would turn the boat round and send her back around one or other side of the course to the owner.  He / she would have 3 goes and be scored accordingly.

It always attracted a good crowd and the on-lookers immediately could see what was happening.  The lake at St. Albans was a very popular venue with Victoria Park and a couple of others having visiting competitions  through the summer months.  It died a death maybe 10-20 years ago.  But we all had chest waders and there were a fair number of ladies taking part as well.

Also at St. Albans we were a venue for round the pole racing, this could be noisy and often the boats could not be seen due to the spray.  The sound of a flash steamer at full speed has to heard to be appreciated, this could be at around 80 mph.  There were many world speed records registered here.  This was only done 2 or 3 times a year.  The do-gooders tried to stop the competitions as they said that we would kill off the wild-life!

As this had been going on for 50 years and there was still an abundance of wild-life clearly not true.  The ducks would sit a few yards out of range watching the boats come by at speed and looking for any choice morsels turning up in the wake. The RTP racing died off after avion flu struck, with the local hotelliers refusing to take guests in with possibly contaminated boats.  A risk assessment was completed in 2006 for this racing and the controls on lines and how often they could be used also having colour coding for identification, it goes on for 10 pages or more.  The people asking for it were none the wiser afterwards!

The lakes have been there since circa 1934 when the Jarrow Marchers stopped over to work for food and lodging they turned 3 streams into the two lakes we have now.  We shall have the photographs of this digging on our web site very soon.

One of the later do-gooders, a certain government agency forbids even banging a spike into the ground as it may disturb Roman ruins!  If we have a gazebo erected we have to use water weights to keep it steady.  As the marchers had deposited 10 feet of topsoil around on excavating the lake this is a most un-likely event.  But such is life!

The council have neglected the lakes and the nearby River Ver and keep getting consultants in to advise them, if they had spent half that money on maintenance the lakes would be in a fine condition.  When I challenged them on this neglect they would not admit any past problems and just said and I quote "We are where we are"!
Best regards
Roy

Hi all;
I made a very tiny improvement for my tiny Jupiter P-550 as she has suffered from water ingress though it's a tiny amount
in one sailing.Each time I get the boat recovered,I make it a practise to suck the water through a hand-made pump.
But in these days,I feel it troublesome to do such sucking.The original reason why she has suffered from I guess is that
I changed the prop shaft of 2.5mm dia to 2.4mm dia with a new powerful prop to increase the speed.
And I did not have the 2.5mm shaft at that time when changed.
In order to at least reduce(dare not say prevent from)the water ingress,I have very simply used an aluminum tape with
glue around the shaft partly as far as the shaft reaches about 2.6mm dia against inside dia of 2.70mm stern-tube.
1;The ready-made prop is below with a 2.50mm dia.
2;Right one is used currently with a 2.40mm dia.
3;I have used an aluminum tape purchased at 100yen shop.!! {-) But it is I think sufficiently available for this purpose. %%
4;I made like this.The parts not covered with the tapes for thick grease zone to refrain the water from coming in.!?

The test run is supposed to take place in the next week or later..

Hi all;
We seem to have entered into so called rainy season here in Tokyo and it's been raining intermittently in a day in these days.
I am obliged to stay home in this sense in addition to covid-19... {:-{ :((
In the meantime,I have felt something unsatisfactory with the sailing quality of my Jupiter P-550,especially that ugly porpoising at high speed.... {:-{
Therefore, I made up my mind to reduce this ugly characteristic by installing trim tabs at transom.
I have numerous kinds of RC plane parts left in stock unused for a long time and intend to make use of some of them,as trim tabs are naturally very similar to the elevators of an airplane.
1;Using some parts of RC planes left in stock..mainly hinges and control horn of wing surfaces,etc...
2;I have the parts ready like these simply.Just cut ,form, file and sand...
3; Tab adjustment arms have been made like these...
4;Assembling tabs..
5;Installing the tabs to the base of trim tab installation provisionally..
6;Locating the the bases of tab adjustment arms on a base of trim tab installation..

To be continued..

Hi all;
Final setting of my full span trim tabs has been done after painting as in the pics below.
A problem is the very weather for a test of the trim tabs to see how they function to reduce the ugly porpoising... {:-{ :((
We are in the midst of the rainy season now,that should continue normally as far as late July during which it rains or gets
cloudy intermittently.. {:-{
1;After painting
2;Trim tabs screwed down the hinges
3/4;installed to the transom by screws
5/6;Initial setting of the angle of the tabs is this level...

Hi all;
 I went to my local lake,of course, to test the full span trim tabs installed at my tiny JupiterP-550.
It was so cloudy, but calm on the water suitable for model boating.! %%
1;Good enough on the water for testing trim tabs! Look at the mirror-like surface in the back!
2;The tabs were set this level of angle....
3/4/5;And she set sail on the lake and soon the bow began to slightly sink splashing around as seen in the pics,by which
       I was frightened,as the bow seemed to go into the water slowly according to the speed.
      Even such positions could not be seen well by high splash on both sides.!!! {:-{ :(( {-)
     Attention to the strange shape of splash in the pic Nr5. {-) {-)

In this sense, these tabs functioned well enough with a bit positive angle as in the pic 1.
Well, I soon recovered the boat to reset the angle of the tabs to rise the bow... {-) O0

To be continued....as I'm sleepy.!
Title: Re: My favorite RC boating scenes at our local lake
Post by: Backerther on June 26, 2021, 04:03:58 am
Hi all;
Anyhow I was really surprised to see the boat sailing with a large and high splash soon after starting,by which splash the boat was surrounded,and what was worse,the bow seemed to sink slowly in the both splash.!! {:-{
I really felt it was so effective to have the trim tabs rather than I had imagined previously...
1;I re-set the angle of tabs to negative side to this level.
2/3/4/5;And re-start the test run slowly.....and she responded at last to my earnest expectation to go smoothly on the water
      as seen in the pics and video clip below.!!
     However I am not still satisfied with the level of this improvement,as I felt she could run much better by more adjustment of tab angle which I tried to do here,but she suddenly stopped on the water as seen in a video clip, due to the prop loosened a bit.At this time I could not help suspending the trial run after preceding two test runs.... {:-{ :(( :((
Attention to the smooth stream of splash around the hull though it was at 80% throttle. %%

And I already fixed the problem for the test in next week.!!

Hi all;
To sum up the test run of the trim tabs,the tabs were found to be successful but the test was unsuccessful as the boat
stopped suddenly due to a prop problem in the third run. :(( The true object lay elsewhere...?? {-) O0
Here are other pics of the day of test run.
1/2; To my regret,I was unable to have her run at full speed due to the problem,at which I was so eager to know how she
behaved by the trim tabs...though I really had a good imagination that she might respond to my earnest expectation even
at full speed.!!
3;Water ingress after 8minutes run...
4;I finally intend to have her run with this level of posture at top speed.
5;Present posture at top speed inviting many porpoising

I presently have several options to improve the sailing characteristics. One is to find the optimum angle of trim tabs and the other ,to make smaller tabs and their mixed option.
6;Negative angle if necessary....
7;New small trim tabs under way(below)
  Next test run is supposed to take place in the next week if it should be fine day for the test run !! %% O0
I wish I could post a better result here with pics and video again.!! O0 ♬~♩~♪~

Hi all;
I already have set my Jupiter P-550 as seen in the pics below to test the improved trim tabs and new 3 bladed prop as well
as new angle of the tabs to a bit negative side.
1;New smaller trim tabs
2/3;Installed at the transom
4;The angle was set a bit of negative side from previous experience of test...
5;New 3 bladed prop of 36.0mm dia
6;Former 2 bladed 37.5 mm dia P1.4 prop was so torqueful for this tiny 55cm boat, by which the boat was apt to go apparently right side a bit with strong torque consequently....which was dangerous to turn quickly...
7;Overview
I wonder how she should respond to these settings....?? O0 %% {:-{ %)

Hi all;
It was cloudy day on the test run of the trim tabs and smaller 3 bladed prop to improve the sailing postures.
But it was fine for me during the test as she did a really good job meeting my earnest expectations. O0 {-) %%
Yes, she scored 87 in the test ,which I think is PASS in the sailing posture improvement project.
To sum up the test,ugly porpoising was greatly reduced and even apparent rooster tail was also greatly lowered,
by which she could be able to run more realistically in sailing postures/airs that I had long regarded as one of the most important qualities for scale boats.
Then,I should go to the pics and video of the test as usual. O0 Seeing is believing,isn't it?
1;So cloudy day different from my feeling on the day {-)
2/3;Sailing nearly at full speed making sharp,long and clear arches of splash on both side
4/5;Actually no clear rooster tails
6;The wakes to follow ..
7;Returning after a successful run with new equipments..
8;This kind of so called rooster tail actually disappeared partly due to being able to produce higher speed stably
   than ever before and trim tabs.. O0

The following video will be of some assistance to tell the conditions on the day how she could ran smoothly.
I personally think an apparent improvement be seen... O0 No apparent bow up at full speed this time due to the trim tabs.!!
In addition,a longer run time was also achieved by a little less-pitched 3bladed prop than P1.4 as a by-product. {-)

"RC boating for today" is the followings..OoPs..Before that,,First of all,thank you Martin, radiojoe and SteamboatPhil for your kind comments. :-) ok2

It was generally fine but a bit windy day today,though I thought confidently my 1m Jupiter F-99 could be able to run on the lake with ease and went there for the first time since last sailing on June30.

The boating video for today is as below.
https://youtu.be/AmFTpU2CVXA

1;Wishing a safe return!
2;Prepared a rescue boat
3;Cooling water was securely drained and the motor was not hot nor warm at all.!! O0
4;The sun ray was reflected by the cabin windows. The air temperature was 28 degrees C.
5;Running powerfully about 100m away from the shore. ;D
6;It's a sailing day today under the blue sky with some clouds here in Tokyo.
7;"You did a very good job."
8;No water ingress at all in 4 sailings.

A very happy day today with a cheerful sailing for me.
 Next sailing will be performed by Najade...the next will go to HMS Fencer ?? %% {-)

This is certainly a miniaturized version of an industrial clutch? or coupling?...... :-))

Would be very pleased if you could confirm manufacturer type etc

Hi derekwarner;
Thank you for your question about  the disc coupling I have used for my Jupiter F-99.
I bought the coupling from misumi Japan and you may get it at the following ;
www.misumi-ec.com/my/common/EC001LoginCmd.do (http://www.misumi-ec.com/my/common/EC001LoginCmd.do) MCGL

The type I have used ;Disc coupling MCGL which specifications are shown in the attached drawings.
This coupling is so calm as in the video and able to tolerate over 24000 RPM by the specs. The price was 1980 yen7 years ago.
1;Drawings of the coupling
2;The same type of coupling used in my Najade
3:Bench test of RPM with this coupling reaching 24100RPM for some ten seconds..calm but I was afraid of the number of 24100 RPM..and stopped the test at this level.. The motor for the Jupiter F-99 is 2200KV,1200W

I hope the above answers your question.

Hi all;
Next boat to go out for sailing is this Najade who has been checked the other day first in 2 years due to some reasons... {:-{ :(( Some corrosions were found at the nipples of ESC due to my laziness for her. Moreover I did not imagine at all that such
corrosions might have arisen at these points....Have you been checking regularly such corrosions about suspicious parts of the boats ?? I have thought at that time I must be more careful about this corrosion problems,especially water circulating parts of the boats.Unless this kind of care is done properly,the boats may have been stopped by the overheat of the motors,
off far from the shore in the worst case....!!! <:( <:( {:-{ :(( O0 Intensive check and check are the very important before and after the boating to refrain from losing on/in the water, aren't they..?? O0 %)
1;Started the checking work..some cosmetic work was also required to keep her elegant and young,beautiful... ;) %)
2;Corrosions were found here !! Intensively cleaned up to pass the water smoothly!!
3;Arond the motor is OK!  3660-2050KV 1800W brushless motor rotated powerfully with its peculiar metallic sound, together with a 160 A water-cooled ESC.
4;"I wonder how long it takes to finish the checking...??" >:-o >>:-(
5;"It's over,honey! and I'll try the test" {-) %%
6;Water passing test by hand pump.
7;Done cleanly and smoothly ! O0
8/9;The time to go boating is near if it will be fine weather..but its been rainy,cloudy and colder in these days here. {:-{ :((

Hi all;

I have bought an anemometer very recently and put a homemade wind direction gauge which is detachable for easy handling.
The purpose is ,of course,to enjoy a happy model boating with less trouble about the weather by checking it numerically.
Need less to say,even without this kind of equipment,weather conditions for boating could be judged by the experience and seeing the water directly.However with this equipment,I could grasp precisely the conditions and memorise concretely how strong the wind blows,which directions the wind comes as well as water conditions like it's so wavy or mirror like surface,etc...
By using this anemometer every time going to boating,something like a certain data will be input in my poor memory in brain. O0 {-) %%  Moreover it seems interesting to know the weather when boating for me.!! O0 I like this kind of auxiliary equipment for outdoor activities. ;)
1;The anemometer I bought.I like this type with 4 cups
2;Compass
3;4 cups
4;Wind direction gauge I made %% which is detachable easily for carrying.
5;Installed on top of the anemometer.
6;Breif test by an electric fan.
7;I will set it like this outdoors when boating.
 An additional enjoyment with this equipment seems to be added when boating.!! {-) %%

Hi all;
It's really my pleasure to show you many interesting,comparatively unusual shots of my Jupiter F-99 taken yesterday at our local lake.
It was fine weather except wind speed but it is not rare in this cold season around this lake.
We have at times been forced to enjoy the RC model boating under this level of windy days,especially in the winter. {:-{ >:-o <:(
Wind speed was around 4.5m/s(16.2km/h on surface,Beaufort scale 3)
Here are the pics of my Jupiter F-99 sailing and pitching frequently on the rough waves dynamically. {-) %% O0
1;Max wind speed was 8m/s(Beaufort 5)
2;Carefully checking the boat unlike normal day sailing.!
3;Sometimes like a skipjack!
4;Splash!
5;Dynamic !
6;Like a hydrofoil!
7;Into the water !
8;Fully high jump !! A first class skipper !!?? {-) %% O0
9;Cooling water was securely drained sufficiently.!

Hi Backerther...

No 1:  On this I admire you.  I have an air flow meter on nature of my last work but it is not an anemometer -very few of us in the west might take anything so sphisticated out on a model boat run
No 6:  Like a "hydrofoil"???  maybe you mean hydroplane but I can't see it either way myself

I was looking as I have some parts coming from Japan (it is always a complete pleasure to order from Japanese suppliers unlike China).  You seem to have some great waters to sail in also.

After the sailing on the fierce waves...
1;No water ingress fundamentally at all except some water drops..
2; "How about the adventure sailing today,Miss,No seasickness ?"
     "Oh,Not at all sir,I made the best efforts to sail safely" {-) %% :-))
3;With a good partner, a camera woman ??
4;Cleaned the inside of cooling water tube up using a fresh water for the next sailing.
   The water came down through the rudder outlet neatly.

I am eager to sail Najade or HMS Fencer if the weather is fine for them....I wonder when to come for them?? {:-{ {:-{ :-)

Hi RST;

Thank you for your kind comment and teaching on my postings which I fully understand.
The sailing lake in the pics is for water supply reservoir and flood control purpose for Tokyoites.

Wind speed measured on this bridge was around 9m/s,Beaufort scale 5 which was fresh breeze.
Right side of the lake is our sailing spot. Width of the lake is roughly 270m.

Hi all;

Today I'd like to post typical 3 scenes of my Jupiter F99 sailing on my usual lake.
1;Very calm...I could enjoy a happy sailing at full throttle and the wind speed 1 or 2m/s,but this is rare throughout a year.
2; Middle level...Normally this level is seen and suitable,my favorite conditions for boating. %% O0 :-)) Each wave is comparatively small.
3;Rough and fierce level in the winter like last sailing...The pic was taken 4 years ago and I guess the wind speed was around 9m/s average on surface.I felt something fearful when operating the boat. O0 Compare the 1m boat with the sizes of triangled waves. Frequantly summits of the triangled waves became white,that means toooo windy,as you may know.
4; The last sailing of my Jupiter F-99 drenched fully.
I normally decide whether or not to go boating depending upon the previous night weather forecast,however the actual weather is capricious on the spot,as you may know... {:-{ :(( O0
So I couldn't help boating sometime on the rough water if I was confident to go judging from the wave conditions.
Needless to say,I do prefer a calm water,but I could not expect that in many cases, especially autumn and winter around here... <:( <:( {:-{ :(( >:-o

V type hull seems good and indispensable for boating for this lake.!! O0 O0 O0 %) ok2
PS;How about the pic;No4 for "Photo of the month",if you don't find more adequate one,Martin? {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

Hi all;

Pics for today on the model boating at our local lake are as follows;
The boat has been named by me "Poseidon"apart from the kit manufacturer's name.
It was fine day with the air temperature of 14 degrees C and 2m/s wind from the south which direction was bad for boating
when the boat should suddenly stop off the shore as she might drift to the north for more than 2km away !!!! <:( <:( {:-{
Here are the pics of the boating site this day.
1/2;good conditions !
3/4;Onboard scenes....a kind of harem..?? {-) %% {-) {-) {-) :-))
5;Moval air intake hatch for cooling inside.
6;Air ejection door

Hi all;

Today I would like to report the test run of my Poseidon equipped with a new 150A ESC, as previous 120A got out of order
at last after 7 years service... <:( The boat is equipped with a 2050KV brushless motor driven by normally 30 C or more with 5000mAh lipo run by 6 times a day on average. So I have thought 150A ESC must be much better for her to keep a stable sailing regardless of seasons. O0 {-)
The test run was so reliable and stable enough to fulfil my expectations though I operated the throttle only to half this day.
But speed was as seen in the video below, that satisfied me very much as the first run.!
In due course,not so far,I will intend to run her at full throttle for my curiosity. O0 {-) %%
1;Actually no wind on the water which is sooo rare especially in this season. mirror-like surface!!
2/3/4/5/6;Cooling water drained sooo smoothly from both sides of the hull.
7;The wake in the background is,of course,a waterfowl.This day I could observe close to 20 waterfowls. O0 ;) very calm!!
8;I spent a very happy time for 3 hours with my boat and ??... :o :embarrassed: ;)

No heat nor warmth at the motor and ESC !! O0

Hi RC model boaters;
Boating,boating,boating.!! It's a model boating day today here in Tokyo.!! The wind is about 1m/s east as per forecast and very calm on the surface of our local lake like a mirror-like level.Outside air temperature is 14 degree C.,too warm for this season.Many people have already come here in the park for enjoying BBQ and soccer games were being held among young boys as well as baseball games....
Well then, shall I take a look at my outdoor activity for today...as follows;

1;A very kind "camera man" is taking many pics of my boat before his boating!! %%
2;A RC yacht is also sailing today.
3;Rc yachts race was going on near by..though no wind actually
4;Mirro-like surface with 1m/s wind from east...sooo calm!
5;Watch this wind indicator and surface of the lake....0.9m/s
6;It's a lunch time on the grass. Menu ? I like rice balls(”onigiri” in Japanese)very much O0
7-10;My Jupiter is sailing with a very smooth and powerful drainage of the cooling water flowed behind by the speed. :-))

Finally,a video will show you how my boat did actually on the water.!!
The throttle was at about third quarter at highest in the video.No need to increase more speed for me.! O0 %)

Hi all the RC boaters;
Mid-winter sailing for today has ended in failure with rough wave by the powerful north wind and a bit chilly weather.!! <:( :(( I have waited more than 2 hours expecting that the wind would be weaker in vain,as the weather had forecast the wind should be around 1-2 m/s to which I had prepared everything for sailing in the previous night....though,actually NOT. >>:-(
1;Here I am at the parking site for the lake. Oops it's windy so much and chilly !! {:-{
2/3/4;wind speed is about 5m/s(11.3miles/H)  My mighty JUP(Jupiter F-99)could run,of course,safely though it's not interesting to operate the boat as she might be disturbed largely by the wind for my own intended course of sail.
5;Instead, convenient for flying a kite. O0 {-)

I also flew model aircraft from about 1969 with simple free flight models, then control line and finally radio control. I gave up flying models last year as my eyesight was getting too bad to see them properly in the air. Luckily I had always had some boats as well.

I used to fly all year around, even when I lived in Finland. A group of us would drive out onto a frozen lake in the winter and fly there. Plenty of space, no people about, and very flat. My engines would start by hand even at -25 degrees C. In the summer I sometimes flew from the same lakes using floats on the models.

Today I was planning to take a boat out to sail at the club's water in Oxford, but it is a bit foggy here and may rain, so I am staying home and working on a new model instead.

Please keep posting your pictures, I always enjoy seeing other people's models, especially on the water.

Hi all the RC boaters;
I enjoyed RC boating today as usual as it was fine weather with a wind speed of less than 3m/s(6.8miles/h) fundamentally blowing from the north,which is the best conditions for me to operate the RC boat.
The surface of the lake was not so rough nor so calm. I like the wind speed of 2-3m/s for model boating ,by which the boats could run sometimes dynamically and perform sometimes scale like sailing.!! %% O0 :-))
Well then,I would like to review the boating for today.
1;Boating site
2;The wind speed is less than 3m/s and wave is as usual for this season.
3/4;The boat looked as if it were enjoying the cruise on the rough water.! :-))

7;Over the rough waves! O0
8;Under attack by a waterfowl or revenge ? caused by my unintentional near-miss previously done during the sailing.. <:( :-X I didn't notice you at all as I was completely absorbed in the operation of the boat.
9;safely returns after 5 runs today.!

I enjoyed to run this Najade very much today with no wind on the lake.

1;Boating site for today. Many waterfowls were already waiting for seeing the white Najade. {-) {-)

8;Returned safely
9;Sailing followed by a looong wake from stern on the calm surface.!!! :-)) :-))

Hi Derek;
You made a good question to the point this time too.!! :-))
Exactly,this point is ,as you know well,very important to prepare in advance to getting the boat on the water,especially like on
this size of lake to avoid the tragedy......
My style of recovery method is as seen in the pics though I have never used this method except training.... {-)
Instead,I make it a practise to pay the best attention to the boat and associated equipment on the previous night or daytime.The rest is dependant on wishing upon the Goddess of fortune.

Hi Dave_S.;
 First of all,I am awfully sorry to be sooo late in replying to your kind comment.!
Frankly speaking,as you know,it's more interesting to operate the cruiser-type fast boats on a little rougher surface than
calm water. While scale ship is not on such a rougher waters, this is partly because the scale is quite different,my cabin cruiser above is about 1/12 while scale ship (except PT boat)is normally around 1/100 or so. The Snowberry is 1/72.
BUT the sailing water IS 1/1.!!!!!!!  Therefore,even 1m cruiser is normally so sea-worthy than 1/100 scale ship which is natural,isn't it ??
1;Not so interesting to operate on this kind of calm water.
2/3;Sailing under 4.5m/s wind speed...sometimes I was scared a bit.. {-) %% Literary, adventure sailing :-))

The rough weather pictures look great - who takes them? I can't imagine controlling a fast boat in those conditions and operating a camera! I managed some reasonable shots of one of mine recently, but asked a club mate to take the transmitter so I could concentrate on the camera. Unfortunately, the water we use is not very large, so the wind doesn't affect it much.

Hi Dave_S.;
The answer is simple and it's my wife who has been playing a camera woman whenever I go boating. {-) {-) %% :embarrassed: :embarrassed:
Instead,I will be a "servant" sometimes for her when I am asked to do so for her business.
This may be so called "Give and take"..??
How about you to ask your wife or a girl friend if you are single...?? {-) :embarrassed:  You could have more happy time not only operating boats,but also sharing nice time with your camera woman who will take so good shots and videos for you.. {-)

Lucky man! I usually sail my boats on Sunday morning (when my wife prefers to stay in bed) and Thursday afternoons (when she is at work). Luckily, I have club mates who can sail my boat for me when I want to take pictures of them (the boats, not my club mates!).

Derek;

Thanks a lot for your comment. :-))
Certainly yes,our local lake is really good spot for sailing RC boats.
This is just a part of a large scale park and water sports are fundamentally permitted except fishing and full size motor boat. :-))
1;It was a rather warm and calm day ..
2;About 200m away,there was a sailing yacht race meeting.
3;A very kind but strange boater was taking pics of boat and yacht, saying that he would send them to me later...
4;The cooling water did a very good job for the high power brushless motor this day too.!!

Hi all;
I am introducing a mooring buoy which is very simple and easy to make while it is indispensable for me when it come to enjoying the scale realism of the RC boating even at anchor.!! O0 :-))
However,I did not test it yet to see how it worked...except in the bath tub. {-) {-)
Practical test in the water will take place in the later of the month.
1/2;Something strange with these pics...No chains nor mooring ropes were seen even at anchor... O0
3;I wish to realise this kind of mooring at my local lake when I am taking a rest during a boating day.
4/7;I used a food package to which I just painted and attached chains.

Hi all;
Seeking for a kind of scale realism of RC boating even on the water...I made a pair of simple mooring buoys and tested today
as seen below!
The result ?? Yes, so so as usual.. {-) {-) :-))
1/2/3; On the calm water
4/5/6;On the rough water...a bit dangerous if it becomes so windy.!!!
7;Mooring buoys on the water
 I intend to use these buoys regardless of kinds of RC boats and ships from now on positively. :-)) :-))
Because even in a coffee time in the boating day,I could enjoy the "RC boating" just seeing the RC boat with a cup of coffee in my hand sitting on a chair. :-)) :-)) %%

Is it safe to leave your Anchor Buoys at your boating facility? without the need for  :police: ......

Or would they be disappear overnight by dishonest people?  <*<

......who probably would be :embarrassed: other model builders?

Hi Derek;
Good afternoon !!  Wohahhaha-!   You made a very understandable question to me.!! {-) {-) {-) {-)
I thank you so much for your interesting and unique comment on my mooring buoys. {-) %% :}
The answer is No problem at all. As you know well from the pics in the past ,these are easily removal buoys. {-)
So it's so convenient for me to carry them to the boating site though one is about 5kg and the other is below 3 kg... O0

Hi all;
Today I would proudly post wonderful pics of my Jupiter F-99 moored at two buoys as seen below,some of which I think would be OK to be called "a piece of picture!!". {-) {-) {-) {-) %%
It was cloudy and calm fundamentally,therefor the pics would have been much better if the weather had been fine enough.!!
I enjoyed not a few time to stare at the moored boat longer rather than sailing one,with a cup of coffee and some Japanese rice crackers at rest after operating the boat each time.  {-) :embarrassed:

Hi all;
Good morning !, it's a very fine day today unlike yesterday when I enjoyed RC boating with my Jupiter F-99 very much
using 5 3S5000mAh lipo batteries among which I used 3 for mainly a bit high speed sailing as seen below, pics and video. %%
I don't dare to put additional description anymore since you could easily imagine what the boating was from the pics and video as well as the posting made yesterday. O0 :D :-))

It's a very very fine day just suitable for RC model boat sailing with actually no wind,no wave and blue sky.
When on earth should not I go for boating except this kind of good weather !!?? {-) %% :-))
Please imagine how much I enjoyed the boating from the pics and video attached below,that will show you more
clearly and concretely than my humble descriptions. {-) O0

Your footage of the boat was also very good.

I just enjoyed watching it and hope you can have many more days like that.

I sufficiently enjoyed the sailing of my Snowberry to have her run 6 times on the very calm lake though it was hot with 33 degrees C outside temperature. Overall impressions today are calm,hot and no wind around the lake which are actually the summer.!! O0 :} %%

I have been missing in these days the RC boating out on the lake due to many reasons.... <:( <:( >>:-( {:-{ :((
Especially, partly because it is approaching New Year's Eve until then normally it's so busy with many household works to do traditionally
here in Japan, in which many husbands are requested to help their wives make ready for the New Year's Holidays. {:-{
Though, many Japanese husbands would not have possibly obeyed such wives' requests unlike western gentlemanlike husbands ??.... {-) {-) {-) :embarrassed: :embarrassed:

I was enjoying happy boating in December, last year as the followings....but no suitable days found to do the boating this year :-X <:(  unfortunately...

I could happily find the time and a good weather for sailing my RC boat. !!!!! :-)) :-)) :-)) %% %% %%
Yes, actually no-wind, blue sky, warm and calm which seemed for me as if it invited to go to the lake of RC boating.!!!! :D
And yes, I went there, needless to say, together with my krick Najade (improved) who is currently new flag ship (boat?) of my fleet in this lake. She is always elegant and powerful in her sailing on this lake and this time I had her run at 1/3 throttle fundamentally
as the surface of the lake was so calm and smooth like a mirror as seen in the following video. !! :-)) :-))
I took a radius of about 60 yards or more for sailing today as the surface was so fine with no-wind.
My frustration wishing for an operation of a Rc boat was resolved to some extent with the sailing today. :-)) :-)) {-) %%

You had better watch this video in full screen of PC for a better realistic atmosphere of the spot.  O0

Certainly I 'm so happy and lucky to make available for this huge lake as a boating site whenever necessary if only the weather should be suitable.   %) ;)  The lake is close to 7 miles away from home and takes me about 30 minutes by car.
In this sense, I am literally happy-go-lucky when it comes to RC boating site.
But I imagine this kind of lake is not such unusual that it might be located here and there in each country in Europe.....

Hi all,
It's been really a good day for RC boating in the mid-spring here in Tokyo where the outside temperature was 21 degrees C and our boating lake was soooo calm and smooth like a mirror on the surface under the blue sky.
Why on earth shouldn't I go out for sailing my boat in such a good day.!!?  No, definitely not at all ! {-) O0
Well then, shall I begin the boating, the motor starts!.... weeeeeeen, not veeeeeen  {-) {-) %% %%
