Title: Photos Of Scale Model Broads Yacht 'Japonica 1'
Post by: River Model Guy on May 31, 2021, 04:32:38 pm
Hi All,

As promised, I am posting some photos of a few of the Classical Norfolk Broads hire fleet models I have constructed, the first follows as the 1:18 Scale Model Broads Yacht Japonica 1, in all her glory and on her river sailing trails with her scale dinghy 'Titmouse'.

This little Lady and Her Dinghy we sold as a fully equipped combined kit back in our trials in 2016/17.

Any questions folks, ask away.

I will try and post daily inbetween other works on models.

Kindest

Paul

I Uploaded the photo to the image host site directly, then copied the BB code for medium sized image to my post. Not quite text book but it works. HTH  :-))

Hey there, thanks indeed,

More close ups as promised.

All the models I construct, I take down from original lines plans of the real things, luckily enough to have gained the rights.

I shall try and post more pics

That is the most interesting arrangement of propeller and rudder I have ever seen.
It is a most beautiful model, but I just love the dingy...you are to be congratulated  :-))

Thank you very much, very kind,

Yes indeed the Broads craft, have quite unusual very elongated keels, and large spade rudders, though ver shallow for the design of navigating the shallow rivers and Broads, 600mm/ 2feet draft in normal terms.

That spade rudder was designed for the Japonica class back in the 1940s, where they were fitted with side mounted single cylinder petrol engines in the cockpit, and to avoid rudder obstruction with the propeller when turning about under sail, tacking up and down the rivers, the boatyard owner/designers decided it was more sensible taking a suitable notch out of the rudder than putting tillar stops in the cockpit, permitting more manouvres with ease.

Cheers

It's difficult telling that it IS a model in the first pic of Japonica that you posted!  :-))

Hi Kits, well that's a lovely comment indeed. Huge thanks,

I found a lovely little quiet spot along a riverbank with my wife to enjoy Japonicas maiden voyage and photo the event, the wind was just perfect, a gentle breeze allowing her to ghost along just like the real thing... Then the wind came to nothing, but no snags to japonica for I simply switched the radio control to motor, and in she came back to us alongside the riverbank. Great fun.
