Hi All
Well I had a senior's moment and with glassy eyes I bought an old kit from E Bay !!
The box arrived with no problem all the way from ye old England.
Dam cheaper than postage within Australia !!!
The box was very well package, but the nightmare started.
No plans, two bulkheads missing and the keel was a piece of delaminated plywood.
As for the bulkheads also delaminating and the stern bulkhead had a serious twist in it.
After a total workout of what I had, it was on to the internet thingy to find some HELP !!
The Lads from Mayhem come thru with a pictures of the plans and of the boat.
THANK YOU EWE ALL !!!
So it was time to start this project or go back to other projects ??
I decided it was not going to bet me !!!
So all new bulkheads and save the stern one .
The wheelhouse/cabin sides are in good condition which will be my base for the boat.
Canabus
-
Hi All
Had the lads on the job today !!
Removed the twist out of the stern bulkhead.
Redesign bulkhead 4 and design up bulkhead 5 which was missing.
Bulkhead 4 is going to have a doorway into the rear cabin, but no windows.
Lots of masking tape holding it all together !!!
The lads pack up early as it's winter in Tasmania.
Harry
-
Hiya Harry,
At first glance, the wood doesn't appear that bad.
The lads have certainly been busy haven't they, it actually resembles a boat shape now.
I'm sure you'll beat it and it'll be a nice model buy the time the lads have finished, even with Taz working hours.
Looking forward to seeing the end product and how well it performs.

Hi All
Well it's time to glue some bits together starting with bulkheads 3 and 4.
Bulkhead 3 has been modified by cutting out a new one with the center section between the cabin sides removed down to a lower wheelhouse floor level.
I lowered the prop angle of this.
Moved the center section of bulkhead forward to have doors into the forward cabin.
Bulkhead 4 was angled back a bit with the top section of the rear cabin added on.
This will have a door into the rear cabin, but, no windows.
I roughly sat the 540 motor in position to see if I had some motor clearance ??
Next will be more work on the stern section as bulkhead 5 which was missing is still not spot on!!!
At least I saved the stern bulkhead and the rear cabin double window section.
Canabus
-
Hi All
Well chaps, I made up a keel from the old plywood from the kit (to be replaced) and the missing bulkhead number one.
After a few goes at bulkhead 1, I work out that B5 still is not spot on !!!
Finally crack it, the bottom outside was to deep by 2mm.
A quick trim down and that problem fix.
Lots of masking, I think I will have to restock !!!
Made to wheelhouse floor as well as the base panels for the two cabins which will keep to the hull square for the next glue-ing up.
Next is a new keel .
Canabus
-
Hi All
A few more days work on the hull with the first layer of outer stringers added.
The original plans did not have middle stringers in the hull bottom.
I added these to stop drumming of the hull because of the thin outer plywood skin.
The keel and the first bulkhead(missing from the kit) had work out well.
Used bulkhead 2 and 5 as template for the boat stand with the same spacing on the base board.
House door stopper under the base board to keep it off the ground.
4mm dense foam with sticky back for the hull to sit on.
My Lord it's starting to look like a boat !!!
Canabus
-
Hi All
Major project to make the boat stand !!!
Used bulkhead 2 and 5 templates for my cross sections.
Door stoppers for under the stand and to hide the screws for the cross sections.
4mm sticky back hard foam in the cross sections.
On the boat added the two outer stringers.
Canabus
-
Hi All
Started on the little curve bits for the deck.
The bow section of the deck is too high, but the big flat file will fix all that !!!
Made the rear cabin roof as well, clamping the top section to the bottom via the window opening .
This work out very well with only a bit of filler to add later at the corners.
With all the stringers installed the hull is pretty solid.
So next is the forward cabin roof and the curved section under the wheelhouse windscreen.
This generally is my problem area, I have come up with a new plan and hope it works !!!!
Canabus
-
Hi All
A lot of test fitting today, making and gluing in the curved bits for the forward cabin roof.
Also made the curved piece for across the front windows.
I am adding a vee into this and the wheelhouse windscreen.
Canabus
-
Definitely starting to resemble a boat now Harry.
Keep up the good work :-))
Will
-
Hi All
Well thank you Will !!!
The forward cabin roof is finished with tags under the cross section ready for the front window panel.
A double 10mm magnet holds down the rear end.
I found the bulkhead 2 which I copied from the original was 4mm out on one side at the deck and side corner.
I added timber and retrimmed to correct it!!
I have replaced the forward deck with a one piece piece of plywood.
Finished all the camber pieces ready for the deck.
The motors for another few projects arrived today, so replacing one in another boat for the one I am installing
in the Wavemaster !!!
A 35mm 1250kv on 3S Lipo for this one.
So it will onto making the motor mount and installing the motor as well as the prop shaft.
Canabus
-
Hi All
The last few days have been cold with snow down to 400 meters !!!!
So glue is slow drying, but I have done the motor mount for the 540/35mm brushless motor.
The disc on the mount is my alignment tool which I designed.
Uses the motor mount holes to hold the mount and the drive shaft clamps onto the center hole.
Next job is to shorten the drive tube and glue that into place.
All fun in 10C !!!!
Canabus
-
Hi All
The drive line is in and installed the motor !!!
Next to start skinning the boat.
Canabus
-
Hi all.
I've just received a Vintage model works Wavemaster 34 from SLEC. First thing I noticed how great the laser cutting is and in comparison to the SLEC police launch it has zero sawdust, I had enough sawdust with police launch to set up a lucky dip!!
My question is in relevance to this post is that the instructions call for the use of building board/jig whereas the 'originals' didn't use a building board and virtually slotted together!
So, is a building board/jig necessary for the modern tooling??
My other concern is that the skins aren't pre-shaped which the police launch and my previous boat build of the Aeronaut Jenny both had pre-shaped skins.
What sort of issues am I likely to encounter with the skinning and is there a way to.make/use a template beforehand??
Kind regards
Dave
-
Hi Dave,
The original H&M Wavemaster 34 kit did use a jig to build it - check the thread on Mayhem to see it and read about it.
Bob.
-
Hi All
I check the original skins and they are pre-shaped, but totally wrong at the bow.
Also the side ones are too short and starting to delaminate at the bow.
So new skins for the sides and bottom of the boat.
The bottom ones I am reshaping for templates to get my new ones right.
The sides ones I can use from bulkhead 2 back as templates and new forward of that !!!
Over size-ing for a bit as per the old way skins were cutout.
Canabus
-
Hi All
Cutout the new skins today ready for test fitting.
One side of the bottom clapped on for a bit of minor trimming.
Heat gun onto the bow area with some heavy clamps to pre-bend the plywood to shape.
Will do the same to the other side before starting gluing.
Canabus
-
You have nearly caught me up Harry - I need to get my Wavemaster 34 of of the shelf and think about finishing it! %)
-
Hi Zooma
You better get a wriggle on !!
I started skinning the bottom.
Canabus
-
I am having a semi-enforced "rest" at the moment - but not for too much longer!
Soon I will be bothering Tony again with some more pictures - but first I need to find out why my ESC is not happy to share too much electricity with any of the three motors I have fitted into my Remora!
Once I have got this problem solved I will get back to cutting some wood again!
-
Hi Zooma
My shed is always open to solve problems for fellow boaters !!!
Just require all the specs of the setup and what you have as spares ????
Canabus
-
Hi All
Go the other bottom skin on.
Watch out Zooma, closing in on your build !!!
Canabus
-
I am giving you a heads start ;)
-
Hi All
Well that was a lot easier putting the spray rails on before the sides !!!
Able to clamp each one down and on the mark line for gluing.
Canabus
-
I have not added any strakes to my original H&M Wavemaster 34 hull, but I still have the "strake making" jig set-up on my bandsaw, so I think I will make some more and fit some to my hull too.
Strakes would probably not have been used on a craft like this (?) so they may not be very "scale" like - but they do look good!
I will probably run mine full length - but the shortened ones that you have fitted look good.
BTW - what is that black/dark brown glue you have been using on the bulkheads etc? It looks a bit like hotmelt?
-
Hi Zooma
It's Titebond 3 Ultimate Wood Glue (WATERPROOF).
I use it as a filler as well to get a solid link between the edges.
Canabus
-
Hi Zooma
It's Titebond 3 Ultimate Wood Glue (WATERPROOF).
I use it as a filler as well to get a solid link between the edges.
Canabus
Thanks Harry,
A liquid filler sounds like a good idea - I may have to invest in a bottle of that!
Enjoy your weekend!
Bob.
-
Do you thicken it with anything? Base colour for Titebond UB3 is pale cream?
-
Hi Zooma
No thicken, just run it in with a small tube and run the finger over it.
The sides installed and dry fitted my other bits to get a look at what the boat really will look like.
Next up is the chine rails and rudder.
Canabus
-
What a difference that's made Harry :-)) 8)
-
Hi All
Having a big crack on with the boat !!!
Used the same idea as doing the spray rails on the chine rails !!!
Dam that was easy !!!
Onto windows with using 2mm clear for the windscreen and forward windows.
One piece with a heat bend in the middle.
Also cut out the wooden surrounds and shaped them for the deck and roof curves.
Last I installed the rudder tube.
Canabus
-
Coming along nicely!
-
Well done Harry.
I've seen quite a lot of pictures and a few videos of other people's Wavemasters under way. It will be interesting to see what difference the rails make to how yours rides. The non rail Wavemaster that I have seen all appear to plough through the water a good bit.
Is that the name of the boat? :}
Will
-
Hi Stuw and Will
At present I have a 35mm 3 blade prop in the boat which I was planning to use with a 540 80 turn brush motor on 2 S which is about 9000 rpm.
Also have a C3542-1250kv which will bolt straight in with a different uni joint and with the same battery, the same rpm.
Power would about 4 times more.
The changes are from other boats I have restored or made .
I added chine rails to my 1920 Gentleman's Runabout and turned that from a wet running boat into a dryer running boat.
Chine rails had not been invented in 1920 !!!
It still not great on the turns which I think spray rails would help ??
So a two years ago, I pick up a Queen which is nice boat, but it was vanished with a wire brush !!
Vanish runs, leaks from wet running, windows that leaked and roof with broken pieces.
So far re-vanishing, replacing the cabin windows and repairs.
I ran the boat, the CG was too far forward( drop a lot of lead into the stern) which stop it from running like a tug.
So back in the shed, spray rails and chine rails plus moved the battery to forward of the rudder.
Still had to add lead around the rudder.
The CG back to about the same.
Next trip to the water, the boat sits up on the plane, dry, turns super great and that is flat-out!!!
TOTALLY HAPPY !!!
NO, Will, just a Mad Tasmania stir !!!

Unless planking, the joint between the various deck parts was always a problem. Had to be able to be packed into the kit box but nowadays, due to "Scratch" building, a one piece deck is not a problem. Centre cut out wouldn't be waste. Bits of 1/16th ply on a Sea Hornet a nightmare.
Regards Ian
-
Hi Cliclip
I built a Sea Hornet from scratch from the original plans !!!
Super cool boat, but stuff a 28mm brushless 1900kv on 3S in it !!!
It's a rocket on water !!
Canabus
-
You are kidding.....it must have sat on its prop.....which with that set up would have been in the air... O0 O0 O0
go on send us some some pictures... :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

The Sea Hornet in a wide turn and coming back on the right hand side of the canal !!!!
Canabus

Lovely stretch of water there....
-
Hi Phil
Another video of the Sea Hornet at low speed and later my 1920 Gentleman's Runabout( tail boat) with chine rails added.

Hi All
A busy few days, resin coated the inside of the boat and installed all the deck.
Sealed the under side of the deck with a coat of wood glue.
Canabus
-
Hi All
First day of our second lockdown, so back to the shed for trimming the deck edges.
A bit of filling and sanding.
Finally a coat of fiberglass resin on the bottom and sides, then under the heat lamp to start the setting.
I think it's starting to look like a boat !!!!!
Canabus
-
There is nothing like a lock-down to encourage more progress on your model boat projects :-))
Stay safe Harry!
-
Well done Harry, more progress made.
She'll have a wet bottom soon enough.
In the mean time, stay safe.
Will
-
Hi chaps.
Good to see someone making progress! I haven't done anything for months now! But looking at the builds I'm not the only one, there was a number of Fairey builds going on at one time but hardly anything at the moment.
But now that the nights are drawing in and temperatures dropping thoughts are turning towards working on the builds again, if I can remember how to do it!
Chris
-
Hi All
Well out of lockdown, but still masks out of the house until Friday.
Trying a new primer/filler on the boat, but it's not great stuff as the old one.
Made the two side windows and planked the wheelhouse floor.
Also made the two side seats plus sanded down all the hull.
It's really looking the part.
Canabus
-
Coming along nicely Harry :-))
-
What a difference Harry, looks really good and is going to be lovely model.
At this rate, you'll have it on the water this weekend :o
Will
-
HI Zooma and Will
Not this weekend, off to a swap meet.
Still thinking on paint colours !!!
Maybe red oxide bottom with Spooky blue sides and cabin sides with white roofs .
First coat of satin vanish on the planking and seats after a slow removal because someone made things too close fitting !!!!
Canabus
-
HI Zooma and Will
First coat of satin vanish on the planking and seats after a slow removal because someone made things too close fitting !!!!
Canabus
....better than a loose fit and a nail Harry {-)
-
Hi All
Three coats of Red Oxide on the hull bottom and out in the sun to dry off!!!
Another 24 hours before starting on the sides.
Canabus
-
Looks nice Harry,
I never considered ending the strakes part way along the hull bottom - mine have always run full length from bow to stern, but ending them part way looks good - does it work as well as the full length strakes?
Bob.
-
Hi Bob
I stopped them short on my Huntsman 28 as that is how they are on the real thing but on my other builds I'm fitting them full length. On the real boats, most are twin prop which may be one reason for stopping them short.
As you know they mainly help with getting the boat on the plane but they aren't required at the stern. I don't know if spray rails/strakes help with turning but that is one of the jobs of the chine rails.
Chris
-
Hi Lads
We see what it does in the water ???
I found with some of my other boats the spray rails on the bow start moving the water far earlier into the turns.
As for the lengths for the rails, it was what I had at the time.
Canabus
-
Hi All
As we had a very good sunny day, I apply to first colour to the sides and a light rub down.
Tomorrow maybe another good painting day ???
Canabus
-
Hi All
The second coat of paint on the sides and I also painted the roofs white.
Next up is the cabin sides and wheelhouse in white.
Canabus
-
Thats beginning to look like an original Wavemaster 34 now Harry - well done! :-))
-
Hi All
Cabin sides painted in gloss white.
Wheelhouse floor planked as a test run.
Veneer planking the deck next project.
Canabus
-
Very smart %)
.....But those Crocodile skin/hide covered countered rear bench seats whilst looking the part....maybe a bit rough on the young Lady passengers edit - [bare] bums {-)
Derek
-
Hi Derek
I think they match their handbags and shoes!!!!
Harry
-
Hi All
Well time for the bling decking to make the boat more 1950's look.
Used my fast planking by dry cutting each strip and fixing down with masking tape.
Then folding a section back, adding glue and laying back down.
Wiping excess glue off and reusing the masking tape to hold in place.
Also added the rear cabin windows.
Canabus
-
Looking good Harry! :-))
-
Fair play Harry, that's looking really smart.
The planking will make a huge difference to the deck too.
It's going to be a really nice boat and look great on and off the water.
Will
-
Hi All
Todays second planking day.
Canabus
-
Hi All
Finished planking the deck, it's all sealed and vanished.
As the handrails with the kit were broken/missing bits.
I made new ones and added brass pins at each end.
Also made a short mast for the forward roof.
I should get them on tomorrow.
Canabus
-
What a nice looking boat Harry, looks very crisp and smart.
Looking forward to seeing it on the water. No doubt the available performance will be 'slightly' above scale, like many of your boats.
Will
-
Hi All
Added some dressing but no bells !!!
Harry
-
Hi All
Nearly finished, but, heading the it's first dip this week, hopefully !!!!
Taking Spooky as well for it's first dip as well.
Canabus
-
Ready to make a splash! :-))
-
Hi All
Well splash, the Wavemaster made it into the water after 70 years !!
First trip out was with a 2S Lipo, but hardy a bow wave !!!
Good turning and good great !!!
Next trip out with a 3S lipo and yes a bow wave.
Not getting up to a planning stage.
Next is a re- engine to brushless 1250kv from the Crackin Mad.
A few more rpm and more power.
Canabus
-
Nice to know the Wavemaster 34 is now "finished" but is going for a new power-plant. :-))
-
Well done Harry, another one rescued that could well have ended up in the bin because of the state the kit parts were in and the missing parts.
Now you get some enjoyment from using it
Will
-
Hi All
A few pics from todays run !!!
Going to the brushless C3542-1250kv on 2s Lipo made the boat get up on the plane.
It handled the choppy water great and with the chine/ spray rails turned with no trouble.
Canabus
-
Good news and nice pictures Harry.
I have made a mental note of your motor choice as I have yet to fit mine!
Stay safe,
Bob.
-
Looks good and performing well Harry.
Another of the classics saved.
Chris
-
Looks good and performing well Harry.
Another of the classics saved.
Chris
Hopefully my HMM Wavemaster 34 will be joining Harry's as another saved classic next year.
I guess mine is a bit of a fake as the kit parts were warped and twisted because the box had been stored in a loft for years before I bought it - so I remade them all in new wood!
Having said that - the original parts have been under a press for a year or more now, so it is very likely that I will have a totally original complete kit that can be built as I expect the original kit parts will be nice and flat by now.
This could make a nice original kit for somebody else to take on in the future as I have not marked the original plans or building instructions so it would be a complete and original kit :-))
-
You could always trace the parts out full size and send them to "Dodgy" for preservation.
Regards Ian.
-
So yours is more of a reproduction then Bob! :-)
-
Its 100% original - just like "Triggers" brush....... {-)
-
Hi Zooma
I know a nice warm place to keep that Wavemaster kit !!!
TASMANIA !!!!
Canabus
-
Hi Zooma
I know a nice warm place to keep that Wavemaster kit !!!
TASMANIA !!!!
Canabus
I am sure we can sort something out Harry - as soon as I have finished building this one and checking to see how flat the original kit bulkheads are.
They should be OK by now - I will send you some pictures in the new year when I can get to it again.
Stay safe,
Bob.
