Title: Fleet Manoeuvres at Wicksteed
Post by: raflaunches on August 29, 2021, 03:52:55 pm
Just over 100 years ago was the last time two Invincible’s sailed together- Inflexible and Indomitable (Invincible being sunk at Jutland in 1916) but today two versions of the same vessel sailed in some fleet manoeuvres.
I have to thank Geoff Dixon for his little presents for the Glorious model we had a fantastic morning and partial afternoon carrying out 180 and 90 degree turns in squadron formation- I must admit I still need to learn my port and starboard as two manoeuvres went horribly wrong and Markham was shouted a lot! {-)
One thing we did discover was how difficult it was if things were mis-interrupted and why the manoeuvres in the Mediterranean ended badly for HMS Victoria and HMS Camperdown. Once mastered however they sailed majestically together swapping positions. As Geoff said to me if it was difficult for us with two ships what was it like with 20 and with different engines/hull shapes/speeds! I am changing a few things inside my Invincible to suit what we learnt today- I don’t need a twin stick so a simpler set up can be achieved. My smoke generators were causing problems with the radio equipment so I had to turn them off. So a little change and hopefully Mayhem at Wicksteed may have some interesting fleet manoeuvres to see. :-))

Hi Colin

We certainly did, spent four hours concentrating on manoeuvres- we learnt a lot from the experience.

Glad you were able to get some shots, I figured I couldn't manage both the model and a camera! Yes, lots of fun and as you said it was very difficult to keep formation but we got better as we practiced and it was very enjoyable and looked pretty cool when we got it right. More practice needed I think!!

Cheers

Geoff

P.S. Remember Port = Left and Starboard = Right!!

Having seen some straight runners on You tube, I reckon you and your new machine have enough teefs Phil.

That is a superb sight Nick and Geoff. Even seeing one sail is great, but almost a squadron! That's fantastic. Add a few Dreadnoughts and the sight will be terrific! You will need to engage captains to get all these capital ships on the water at the same time!

You have to pretend and imagine you are standing on the bridge of your ship and remember PL ands SR -  port -left and starboard -right. It works for me.

I think now ,even the RAF use left and right  rather than Port and Starboard
its much quicker for the brain as it doesn't have to work out that Port is not right
and Starboard is   O0

Very true- we are even trained to identify various components by their locations such LH Upper or RH Wing but it’s probably down the aircrew not knowing their port from starboard as well! :}  We write ADF (acceptable deferred faults- don’t look at me that way or you would probably never fly again %% ) so they are quick and easy to read and understand which area is affected.
I believe the FAA use Left and Right to prevent confusion with ship movements too.
My main problem when sailing with Geoff was using my twin stick and pulling the wrong throttle back to assist turning which is going to be corrected today when my mixer unit arrives from Component Shop. :-))
