I have a Graupner jet boat coming soon and wondered if anyone had built the same, wondering what the steering set up is on these as cannot see the control rods to steer the bucket on the pictures I have looked at?
Thanks

This build thread may help

there is also a section for jetboats

I built one a couple of years back, nowhere near the standard as Umi's work, I made it straight to the plans. I hope that these photos will help, not as focused as I would like but tricky to get a photo of this area.

Hey thanks guys, appreciate the replies.
-
So it looks to me like they steer via a tank steering set up, or am I looking at it wrong? Is there a steering part in the actual jet unit?
-
There is a controllable steering nozzle on each drive along with a reverse bucket

:-))

Single Jet diagram. :-)
-
Thanks Umi, I had a look at your build, very nice :-))

My proboat PBR was going to fit buckets but with the jets being steerable it turns on the spot Tank steering not needed. OK no reverse but in open water not really a problem. are the Graupner jets are not steerable
-
The Graupner jet units are steerable and the boat turns well. I did find that reverse steering is not very effective with the reversing buckets fitted. Independant control of the motors or reversing buckets would help with this although I have not tried this yet.

I have seen the operation of one now, I couldn't see the steerable nozzle on the pics I was looking at but also notice Krick now sell the same jet unit so should also be ok for spares if needed.
Thanks

I just purchased one of these Graupner Multi boats, let me know if you want me to take any particular photos.
-
Thanks Martin, how/where did you come by yours, seem to be rare as hens teeth now?
-
A random post on Facebook..... as you say 'hens teeth'!

That looks like one of the earlier version with seperate hull/deck, what motors are installed Martin?
-
Ah! Didn't know there were two versions!
Don't know what motors, no marking that I could see, but I'll have another look.....
-
The earlier versions were seperate hull and deck and the later ones were blow moulded all in one...
-
How did you get the wheelhouse off, to get inside?
-
Haven't built it yet but it will be the same as the SARS I am building now, wheelhouse is separately built with the die cut plasticard so comes off in one.
-
This not it since Krick took over

When I built mine normal styrene glue was not very effective on the die cut pieces. I tried Plastiweld which normally works well and found the joints failed. I ended up using a 2 part Acrylic glue which worked well.

Same drives but not the same boat..

I always use cyanoacrylate on plasticard, usually stands the test of time Jim.
-
Normal styrene sheet glues well with the normal glues like Plastiweld, I also have some MEK for the more stubborn sheets. The plastic Graupner used was resistant to all I tried until I used the two part acrylic. Cyanoacrylate can be a hit or miss sometimes depending on the glue. There are some specially formulated for plastics but I prefer a welded joint using a solvent glue.

Jim, I note where you are coming from, the SARS I am building is a hard plastic and the jet boat seems to be slightly softer although I made start on the wheelhouse and it went together pretty well with the cyano I use..

A few pics

Have you tried Balsa Cement? Seem to remember Gropener offerings were advised to use "UHU Hart", an expensive Balsa cement.
ABS plastics - Acetone based adhesives, Polystyrene and PVC - Ketone based adhesives. Nylon and Polyethylene - NAILS,RIVETS and SCREWS.
Regards Ian.

Not much progress on this one today as I have been spraying another boat, jet drives fitted and wheelhouse sprayed though..
-
Hull sprayed today.
-
Not sure why that came out upside down.

670russell down side up :-)) [was the photographer standing on his head?.... or at least the pot plants face the sun 8) ]

Rest of the jet drives fitted now..
