Hello !
There is some time since I came to visit the Forum.
So ! Here are the last news.
Before the last fall , I did not know what to built as I already made a lot of different boats. One thing I didn't build as I was not very exited by the principle is to to build my firts paddle wheeler.
Yep ! But which one ? I didn't want to do something that has already been done and the manufactured paddles wheels are out of my budget.
So as Usual , with my friend Marcel, we talked about it and we finally thought that maybe ,we should try something! This is just for the the fun !
Let's draw a hull then , specially for the wheels. It has to be no more than 120 cm  weight no more thatn 8 kg . The weight beeing heavier through the years and the water level lower and lower for a worn out old back. A good calculating estimatipon was realized to allow the whells to be properly positioned inside and outside the water for a maximum efficiency. 13 mm below the water level and the water line.
Also to allow a good turning , although this is not the main faciliy of this type of boat, we decided to install the wheels just ahead of the center point. It helps for a straight sailing and an easier rotation.
This is what we decided to to go to :



Then , it is time to draw a pair of wheels that are differents from the other and above all finer and lighter of what we can see here and there.
A friend with a digital milling machine was happy to help us and we just had to asszemble them up with the bits and pieces.



OK ! But what kind of engine and what type of transmission ? It was the harder to decide as we were finnally 3 boys on the same project with 3 different ideas.... !
At the end we have gone for a 5 cc long stroke , installed inclined with direct drive through a dented wheel – 4x1 ratio.


At the end, each one designs his own look for the deck. Mine is minimalist as , the goal is to show the machine and the boiler (home made) . The wheels are hidden by a box to avopid the splashing all around, but surprising there virtualy one.

Bonjour Yves,
Great job indeed and just a little detail, on this type of boat, the wheels turn between 40 and 80 RPM, afterwards, you make foam without really gaining speed.
Besides this; what is the displacement of your machine and which plans did you use ?

[/size]When I built a boat, I do a bit of engineering. Above all with this one which is scratch built. A first for me.[size=0px][/size]The rotation of the wheels depends on the surface of the paddle , the weight of the boat , the diameter of the wheels , engine power  and so on ... Mine run @ +/-140 RPM @ 2b. Ratio 1 to 4. Top of the paddle :  13 mm below water line and standing vertically when at the lower position for maximum efficiency.Below is the "dry" trial on the table. Just to check if the boiler stands the pressure with the steam valve wide open . The engine is designed to run @ 800 RPM at 2 b. 5ccc / long stroke . I have to check the stroke again.[size=78%]
