Title: New Member, New Build
Post by: James321 on October 04, 2021, 05:13:13 pm
Hi guys, new member here, I've been lurking and reading a few build threads to get some ideas on techniques, etc, there's some amazing builds and hundreds of years experience on this forum so it's been incredibly useful.

I purchased the Graupner Azimut Atlantic Challenger kit from eBay a few months ago and have started the build but it's turned into a complete redesign and rebuild.
The boat had previously been assembled and then stripped back down to a bare hull, almost all the major parts for the build were included. The hull looked like it had taken a few knocks in transportation from the UK to me in Dubai, the bow had several cracks in the glass fibre which had sprung the shape and twisted it slightly, it looked like it had also had a substantial amount of resin applied at some time in its past.  My day job is an aircraft engineer so I decided to strip back and re-skin the hull interior with carbon fibre. I then decided to redesign the bulkheads and structure with carbon fibre, you can see where this build will go, I've binned the old school brushed motors and gearbox and will run a brushless setup.
I think at this point I'd better start a build thread so I can post up pictures of the work so far.

I built the challenger a few years back, the hull was way to thin for my liking so added more fibre glass matting/resin..

Russell, great info, thanks for the link.

I've got lots of pictures and updates to make, where's the best area to post a build thread for this type of boat, I'm not sure what category it will fall under?

I would recommend the Pleasure Boats room especially as Russell's build log is there already. Yours would make an interesting comparison read for people wanting to build the kit and have different methods to consider.

The postal system of the world can be a torture on model boats and the like. I have had a hull delivered with a huge crack where it had just been wrapped in a bag with no longitudinal support, but even so, it must have had a weight sat on it to damage it like that, so it is lucky I was cutting and extending it somewhat that I could hide and repair the section.

Welcome to the forum, as you have found, this is a priceless resource for model boat builders as well as other creative/RC hobbies.

Looks like I'm not allowed to post a new build thread in this forum?

I just spent an hour typing it out and trying to figure out how to post pictures only to be told "I'm not allowed to post in this area" when I hit send  >:-o

So it looks like I may have to make 5 posters before the security questions disappear and maybe then I can post a build thread.

If you're typing quite a lot of text I recommend doing so in a word processor first, the copy and paste into the forum. That way if there are any hiccups when posting you still have your text. Saves a lot of hair and blood pressure.  :-))
