Title: What I've been up to
Post by: Taranis on October 08, 2021, 06:31:01 pm
A rest from boats.
I bought a 70 yr old stationary engine to restore.

It turned out to be a lot more involved than I imagined.

How I found it

How are you going to use the "stationary engine" after restoring..?
As a part of generator in emergency or for outdoor life for leisure,etc..?
At any rate,it looks so useful.! O0 :-)

Are you refurbishing the makers plate with
the engine details, Andy?
Any idea why green was the standard colour
for gas oil and petrol engines back in the day?
Great refurb Mate👍
Ned.
Title: Re: What I've been up to

Thanks Ned
As I understand it the correct colour up to a point in 1951 was mid Brunswick green.
I guess it was a colour that was commonly available and used through the industry.
For some reason the last person to play with this painted over the original lighter green to make it look older perhaps.
When I stripped it the original colour was beneath.
I’ve not used that colour but used Emerald green instead same as my tug  O0

I have the original plate which is quite scratched because the muppet didn’t use a paint stripper
I will rivet it back on when I polish and clear coat it.

Nice job Andy, looks better than when it rolled out of the factory !
Petters sound great with their incredibly slow tick over - could be the answer to the huge hike in energy prices on the horizon.

A bit more tweeking today. The belt drum is left without the gib key in for easy removal as the bare crankshaft is handy for manoeuvring.

Meanwhile I'm on with another trolley to carry a vintage water pump to drive.
A new friend of mine asked experienced hobby people why they show their engines. Apparently they get free entry worth £30 a head in most cases then go around the show with wife and kids with an hourly check on their engine  {-)

Title: Re: What I've been up to
Post by: Taranis on November 05, 2021, 08:46:33 pm
Well I thought that was that BUT the wife has softened and allowed my to buy another engine.
I've been looking for a scrapper for free but its cost me £20 plus £20 in diesel and my new friend who drove got a corn mill for £30 that is fantastic but I couldn't take that on myself. So it balanced out well.
So this engine was seized up and all the tin work is totally rotten so unusable but it has turned into a treasure trove of parts.
I got it turning and now there just remains a stuck exhaust valve, this will free off with plus gas.
The carburettor despite  being in a sorry state will come up like near new. I found that it left the factory faulty as the float chamber drain hole had not been drilled far enough to connect with the drain tap  {-)  (best of English Engineering)

I believe due to the above that this engine breathed its final breath due to dirty fuel and fouled up carb after almost 30 yrs then was abandoned for the next 30. So it has only had half a life and as a reward for this all the internals are pretty damn fantastic!
I figure there are many hundreds of pounds of parts here after I spend very many hours harvesting them. For certain I will be fusing the best of my two engines into one Prime unit  8)  then looking for the missing parts to build up a reserve.

New project tomorrow is the making of a new all in one trolley to carry the engine on the right and the pump in the foreground close coupled. I'm still short of parts for engine 2 but its getting there.

Today I made some modifications before testing the pump with the help of my other engine. The size of the drive pulley on the engine dictates the speed of the pump. These engines only run at one speed 750rpm which is maintained under load by a governor. Here the pump is running at about 270 rpm.

Hi Andy,

This might be a daft suggestion but I spent a few years working for a local company who made me drag heavy parts into and out of the pickup and vans.  I know manual handling is different when you work but the principles are the same and putting your back or arm out is no fun either way.  I eventually got a manual scissor lift for putting things in and out of the van.  The link I attach is not what we got because I think we paid no more than 250'odd quid, or a cheap one is avilable at that price (I found it the other night on phone but not since) but looks the same but what a difference it was with one!  We also used it to work on as a portable bench also.

...I think we paid closer to a couple of hundred quid, for a 150kg rated one.  It's not that bad considering price of work benches etc.

https://www.bigdug.co.uk/handling-lifting-c22/lifting-c5797/scissor-lift-tables-c753/scissor-lift-tables-capacity-200kg-to-800kg-p13471 (https://www.bigdug.co.uk/handling-lifting-c22/lifting-c5797/scissor-lift-tables-c753/scissor-lift-tables-capacity-200kg-to-800kg-p13471)

....Just thought I'd mention it as when you're moving heavy things everything helps, particularly you think a 4 man lift would be OK, but you can't usually fit 2 people or more in the back of a van or pick-up.  Of course, no advice applies outside of work -where the mythical "common sense" prevails.

Well thank you for thinking of me Rich  O0

However the lowest height of that trolley is about equal to the two obstacles I will encounter to my garden gate.
It really is quite easy to manoeuvre on my trolley and the weight won't be felt pushing it up shallow ramps into the back of the Berlingo.

Meanwhile the pump rebuild is under way. Although it does pump water it is barely a shadow of its former self and should be capable of self priming.
So this is the mix of crap I've encountered that are supposed to be valves like those of a heart.  {-)

I've considered that as my wife has decided she also wants a Berlingo automatic since she broke her foot. The ride height alone is a big factor, sitting in her 207 feels like your bum is scraping the tarmac  %%

My trolley is back outside now with engine and pump base fitted for good.
Fuel tank is now on so it's only the flywheel cowling I'm short of but tonight I've bought a cowling with another engine attached to it  %%  and as the price is so fair another even older engine thrown in, a 1947 Petter A11  :embarrassed:

good idea except that you have to get on the platform first and that is when you are vulnerable, nemesis

...bunk.  But as Andy said since it doesn't suit.  I only mentioned it as a suggestion.

Actually I watch this thread in awe.  I worked for a pumping contractor and whist I did repair pumps, we didn't do restorations!

Thanks Rich
This pump could be from the 1930's and most likely made by Climax. Unfortunately there are no identifying marks to confirm but it does look like one. Parts are none existent as is any literature so improvisation is the only way to keep them going.
I'm confident that it will self prime and be very powerful when finished. I've not chosen a colour yet but it was originally mid Brunswick green. I will most likely paint it the same as the engine so it looks as one unit.

Under advice from Facebook I've ordered a tin of Neatsfoot oil to soak the piston in before reassembly.

Loving the stationary engines Andy, VERY nice indeed and excellent workmanship too.
I feel that there's something quite hypnotic about watching them in operation, especially some of the really slow running ones, plus hit'n'miss engines too.
I have an old Petter P55e that came out of my Uncles old yacht many years ago. It needs some bearings as was getting a bit noisy, but it's still free, as I turn it over every so often, but will need a total rebuild one day(hen time allows).

Thank you Will
I collected lots of stuff from Goole today. The important part to finish my second engine is now stripped ready for rust treatment and primer. I'll save finish painting for the return of warm weather. Once this is on it won't take much more to fire up this engine that hasn't run since the 80's
Looking forwards to a pain free crank up on Friday  :-)

I collect on Thursday a Peugeot Horizon auto with winch and wheelchair ramp, perfect for heavy boats and stationary engines  :-))  still has five seats too.
Also joining NVTEC I think it’s called this Thursday(west York’s branch) £18 a year with 2 million liability cover.
Might be at a few shows this year

Yes it’s same as my Berlingo Phil
The Peugeot Partner is the base vehicle modified by allied mobility in Glasgow
They buy in bulk and perform major surgery taking the floor out diverting things and replacing with a lower floor ramp and hoist. It then becomes a Peugeot horizon WAV

Today it’s the MKlll Peugeot

Some more progress finally. Both ends of the stuffing gland were ovalised so I drilled them out 13mm and fitted brass sleeves. I'm waiting for another sleeve to bring it back to a 7/16 hole.
The 7/8BSP locknut arrived after weeks of waiting. This is a modification I've done to make the stuffing gland independently fixed and sealed with its own gasket. The wet end can then be removed without disturbing it.

The piston rod was bent and badly worn so I thought better to go the extra mile and make a new one.
The 11mm bar was a bit tight for the 7/16 Whitworth die.

These are pipe reinforcement ferrules and they go up or down in 1mm sizes.
I drilled out the ovalised holes to 13mm and initially used 13mm ferrules to bring the ID down to 12mm. Having made a new rod that is straight and true enabled me to reduce the tolerance by adding a 12mm ferrule making the ID 11mm

My solution to priming the water pump is a revised suction pipe.
I've employed a low resistance non return valve for the pick up and changed the 90 elbow for a Tee with a vertical stub and a loose stop end. The negative pressure in use should leave the stopper in place.

My pump is now easy to prime with a jug of water in the demountable pipe stop end. The non return valve at the foot of the pipe then keeps the water contained.

This 1947 A11 was largely refurbished by the man I bought it off, in fact there's 6 YouTube episodes on it but it still remains to run. It needs a carburettor and fuel pipe to prove it runs and give Dave part 7 for his you tube channel.
Then I'll strip it completely and make like new. Its currently protected with Linseed oil.

For a full three weeks now I've been converting my mothers derelict garage into a secure workshop storage unit.
This will give me lots of advantages in that all my engines can go in there along with current project.
My Stevn's Arctic is so heavy even without batteries that lugging it up and down stairs always gives me back problems so this too will move to this new facility.
I've fitted a 100kg Latham steel door for access and a Garolla Roller shutter to the front.
Getting close to moving in now.
Also installed a 4G security camera to watch my mother and her property as she keeps leaving her door open  <:(
This also gives me excuse to check she is ok and taking her meds everyday.

Hi Andy, you lucky jammy B, all that room. like the slots in the piston crown. makes it easier to grind the valves in. You certainly put some work in restoring the engines and it is satisfying when they fire up, Best of luck and stay safe, bill

Just come back from Cyprus and believe I have seen one of these type of machines sat in the yard of a business, was travelling between Protarus (in the East of the island above Agya Napa), and Paralimini, as you turn off the main road at the lights towards Panerna, there is this company, unsure as to what they are growing but they have a very large pool being fed and on the other side of the wall which is lower than the ground is the dark green paint body work with a black exhaust and top section slightly visable from the bus, should have made the wife walk from Panerna to have a look, its all up hill and it would have been fun as we had just been to Speedy Gonzales and were in the words of the fast shows drunk old man in a chair - we were very very drunk, at about 1:17 were these size of wheels (it had a double belt wheel arrangement), just thought you might like to know.

I doubt there's many places in the world that you won't find British made stationary engines, The industrial revolution is entirely the fault of Britain pre electricity days  O0

I've had to travel far for some of my engines etc but last week I got a Lister D type and four water pumps only 15 mins from home that are keeping me busy for weeks to come.

I was never interested in a Lister D as they made millions  {-)  but it was cheap and I had it running in half an hour https://youtu.be/ueq_Mx21kM8 (https://youtu.be/ueq_Mx21kM8)
This will be stored for some time now while I continue with the pumps

This Lister H1 is the first up and is proving a challenge undoing years of abuse by incompetent users.

I never imagined I would ever restore a Lister D type engine but this came up locally at the right price so using half a gallon of diesel at the most was a clincher.
Your not supposed to do this with an unknown engine but I thought what the heck! it already had petrol in. I soon sorted out a fouled spark plug and off it went.

This is from mid to late 1950 so 72 yrs old

A couple of weeks later its almost completely rebuilt, just the petrol tank to repair and fit.

Fair play Andy, other than your boats, you've got a fine selection of stationary engines haven't you.
I haven't done anything with my Stuart Turner P55 as yet and I have a generator with a Petter AV2 running it that I run from time to time. Neither are restored, but I would like to one day.
Having mine looking as smart and presentable as yours is something for me to aim for.

Thank you Arno
I'm now at a point where I need more space.
Expansion in progress 12'x6'6" self build. In my mothers garden adjacent to the rescued garage.
Note! there is no need to take cement out of the bags. They will go hard all on their own with a bit of rain.

Hi Brian B6
Have you done the ABT Railway in Tasmania ???

Harry
Hi Harry
I have never been to the Apple Isle and am unlikely to in my current state.   I have been on the Kuranda line from Cairns and back on the Skyrail.   Also several of the great little trains in Wales.  %)

Hi Brian

We did Puffing Billy and was a great trip.

The ABT Railway trip we did both ways and we look into the railway workshop as well.

One of the guys gave us a full free walk a round which really top off the day.

The next day we did the Gordon River cruise.

The following day The Wall which is totally amazing !!!

We are planning to do it all again before we kick the bucket.

Harry

Hi Andy,
Don't mean to get into Granny and egg sucking but have you pierced the cement sacks? They have a plastic lining. Impressed with the static engines by the way.
             Cheers,

Yes but it’s not a waterproof lining  :-))   So no piercing and already hard from 3 days rain here.
From the data sheet

Another bonus of the Peugeot HORIZON is the wheelchair modification gives it a bigger headroom. Careful measuring has revealed that if I get my 8'x4' OSB sheets cut in store to fit 1220x1990 they will just fit my car  :-)

I did of course space my joists so that the joints at 1220mm centre on them. The deck will be glued and brad nailed with my new Makita 18volt finishing nailer.

My son will use this more than I ever will (when I've done with it)

Whilst in B&Q yesterday I noticed some copies of Velux windows and in a lightbulb moment I'm thinking the south facing roof will keep the shed warm all year round and very much cheaper than Velux. In for a penny  {-)

I've not realistically looked at a budget for this but I have looked at very expensive pre made sheds that are just that! and crap for the price.
I hope to come in under 2k  %%

It’s all exterior pressure treated timber with a clear underdrawing for ventilation
Title: Re: What I've been up to
Post by: nemesis on August 01, 2022, 01:10:41 pm
Andy, That is even better, you cannot beat ventilation. Dont suppose you can get a bed in there as well? or you can swing a hammock. Good luck with the build, bill
Title: Re: What I've been up to
Post by: Taranis on August 01, 2022, 01:18:38 pm
It will soon fill up
My current dilemma is expense. Ideally the whole upper structure should be clad in OSB board and then wrapped in a breathable DPM then vertical battens to nail the cladding to. That would all be painfully expensive.
I think it will just be clad directly to the frame as I can’t justify the cost just for storage

After I’ve laid the 18mm OSB deck it will be wrapped in plastic sheet and the centre removed after the build is up and waterproof.

Decision is made for the roof. This will be pent with about 10% slope. A single cover of EPDM that has a 20 yrs guarantee and no seams.
This reduces overall cost and makes the build not exceed the permitted height of 2.5 metres on a boundary.
4x2 rafters at 400mm and 11mm OSB sheet.
I'm going to Pershore again where my engine hobby began so I'm not going to order the steel door until midway through that week. The Scandinavian 125x25 cladding will be delivered on Monday so I'll be popular with the neighbours after a couple of thousand shots  {-)

Wednesday I can focus on skinning the roof.
Build cost is going to be closer to 3K given experience and knowledge gained on the way. Materials just keep rising in price!

Thought it was some kind of floor cover like linoleum.
Problem with such is that without heating moisture developes underneath that can then attack the wood. The whole structure is free to breath currently

Yes, you're quite right Andy. I've been refurbishing my summerhouse and under the old lino flooring, in just one corner I found the floor had given way. Now I know why!
Mind you, it was 25 yrs old at least. The floor that is.
It's not an insulated structure but has resisted the weather,  largely, thanks to Ronseal and Cuprinol.

This was then rolled up half way and the water based adhesive applied to the deck all bar a 100mm border, then the other half.
Finally impact adhesive around the edges. The aluminium trims should arrive today.

I built the gate to create an out of sight outside storage area, its 1200x1800. Instruction video found on you tube.

They all look in good shape even before you start refurb work Andy.
Have you not had any issues lifting them about ie into car and from car to bench?
Usually listed as heavy otherwise I'd like to work on project like this as a change.
They end up looking brand new! Really worthwhile.

They are all sub 25kg and they are not in good shape internally which is why they fell into disuse. Users were lazy and often lost or misplaced the correct tools then resorted to violence  {-)

Hmm, those links shed a rather different light on condition and clearly show the extent of your refurbishment work, far more than I expected to see.
25kg still a good lift for me.

My current project the 1938 Lister pump set is providing challenges.
The Magneto a Lucas RS1 has a top cover cap of Bakelite that has seen better days and the contact screw thread is badly damaged from previous poor attempts to remove the steel screw (bad design)

I appealed for a second hand replacement but that met a stone wall.
So left with no alternative but to have a go at a fix I did!
I cleaned the fixed part up enough to apply solder flux
(https://photos.smugmug.com/Lister-pump-set/i-kZ6JtSB/0/eca28e2e/XL/650841B4-BB4B-49E5-86B5-D45BFEFFB7BC-XL.jpg)

Then tinned the contact face and a 4 mm brass nut before positioning for soldering together.

With the aid of a chopped down motor coupling I could put a 4mm brass screw in the lathe
(https://photos.smugmug.com/Lister-pump-set/i-vtHxkCt/0/8c2e6d76/L/75A1A58A-24CB-4F58-9D9B-7AFA975CE654-L.jpg)

To produce a contact screw how it ought to be

Penetrates right thought the HT lead and secures it in place.

Final clean up and all the many cracks in the 84 year old Bakelite were treated to Zap-a-Gap CA

I'm hoping the magneto coil and capacitor are still working

The cast iron base was stripped and primed. The consensus is that it was most likely satin black originally

Having salvaged what was usable from the trolley I rebuilt it with better axles and smaller wheels. It was also too narrow so this was altered too. I wanted the trolley to look more like a concrete plinth as this would never have been a mobile unit.

Winter project won't last to the new year. Nearly ready to start on the pump which is mainly a cosmetic strip service and paint.

I got more info about my engine
Lister D No 148091 was supplied to Gibson Bros of Melling Lancs. on 17-5-1939

Thank you Ray
This hobby is no different to model boats in terms of the different types of people LOL rivet counters and purists thrive.
Manufacturers cut many corners to save every penny so most restorers of my type produce an engine better than it ever was and just like boats you never can get back what you invest but the pleasure is in the journey.

Are there any common problems you find when refurbishing?
Can you obtain parts easy enough?

That's very much like how long is a piece of string.
Rust and seized threads are common as well as wear. It all depends on the condition to begin with and its past life..
Rare engines will all suffer hard to find parts.
A Lister D type was probably the most successful engine in history produced over many decades so there are parts around even if taken from another incomplete engine.

For all engines the expensive parts are Magneto/ Carburettor/ Fuel tank/ Starting handle/ exhaust & muffler.
People buy engines just to harvest the parts and turn £100 into £300 for the bits. There's good and bad to that, the loser is the donor engine but the winner could be 2 or 3 running engines.

This 1938 will be running this week, I'm now working on the water pump it drives

Last week I made a new trolley for the Petter in the background. I sold the old one for £50 which went a long way towards making the new.
That now weighs 120kg complete. 16kg is the trolley.

That's some weight to manoeuvre? On wheels only I guess.
Nice work, all of them. Just the weight that worries me about getting involved.
Your photos are very tempting!
Thanks.

Taranis, are you familiar with the Amberley Museum in Sussex, thay have a good collection of old domestic engines.

https://www.amberleymuseum.co.uk/explore/explore-industry/stationary-steam-engines/

It is just 45 minute drive from us and I have visted several times, probably overdue for another after it reopens next month after the winter break although I'll probably wait for the Spring. A fascinating collection of exhibits in a beautiful setting.

Thanks no but I wouldn’t use fuel to go see static engines. I’m only interested in outdoor crank up meets that are not too far
