thanks for the replys and keep on replying people please. O0

what kind of wood do people use for curved underside of the hull?
-
I used the same ply, cut into strips 25mm wide, edges chamfered a little, glued in place and sanded down.
Ian
-
so ian you did strips of wood for the underside of the hull of marine ply?
-
Has anyone got any pictures theyed like to share of your springers on the topic.

Hi guys.......nearly finished mine......hull sides are made from12mm ply ..bow and stern from 2" x 1" pine bottom of hull is from 2mm ply laid on in one piece and held round the curves with LOTS of clamps.....then strengthen the whole thing by adding glass cloth and resin to the inside....heavy but plays football like vinnie jones.. Where are you located Azziz? Are you going organise a team ?
-
Hi Azz126
I have attached photos of two of my springers, Chingdevil & Lady Linda with some photos of the workings of Lady Linda hope they are usefull. They both have 8mm marine ply sides and deck with Ching having a liteply bottom and Linda having a normal ply bottom. Both are now fitted with 385 motors, I have tried a 540 in Ching, way too powerfull. If you want any more info just ask. They both will be at the International Model Boat Exhibition 9, 10, 11 November.

Any floatation Ching ? ??? Hoping for a group photo from Show.
-
Ching floated at the Mayhem weekend, since then I have altered the front and fitted a new rudder. Lady Linda still has a dry bottom. Hope to get the test tank out, possibly this weekend if not will have to wait a week as I am off to Norwich for a course next week.
Why does work spoil the fun ??? ???
I will definitely get some pictures from the show

I`ll re-phrase that . Do you intend to add buoyancy foam ? Looks like she could hold a lot of liquid..er, :o I`ll re-phrase that too maybe...!
-
Sorry Arrow, I looked at your reply but obviously did not read it :o :o
I had no problems with Ching on its last outing. The superstructure is quite tight and I have had water up to about 25mm across the front of the deck and nice and dry inside. there is a 25mm coaming inside the superstructure just like Lady Linda. The rising damp will only be a problem at full speed, so lightly on the throttle. I have also moved the batteries a little bit further back to try and lift the front, like yours
Do you have foam in any of your springers? I have seen your video so know it can be a bit rough where you sail.

Good a dry boat is a good boat in my book. alas I`ve had the misfortune to fill the whole boat with water, only the foam in the front and back compartments saved it from going down. About 1/3 foam will keep a Springer from going down. I just copied Toesupwa`s from a picture he posted. I`m afraid my habit of WOT(wide open throttle) reflects my aeromodelling experience . Not always rough on the lochs BTW but 65mph forecast for saturday so back to planning another infestation.

Arrow
Great Picture, WOT as you know is not good on a springer.

Arrow
With swell like that it does not matter what speed the springer is going at, there is a good chance of some rising damp

keep the stuff coming people its helping specialy the pics

Well thanks to you lot, I have decided to have a go, I bought a workmate earlier and have cut the two sides, I realise now I should have cut the two together, never mind next
one time. ;D {-)

Its an illness Andy, go to it and post pics.
-
i cant wait to start mine

I notice Martin posted the plans at the start of this thread. Another thread recently questioned rudder size. Since these questions come up every couple of weeks wouldn't it be possible to have a Thread titled Plans and Rules with a single post on it with the info then locked and fixed at the top of the section. I did think I had seen this before but don't see it now.
This would also be straightforward for other websites to link to with advantage of publicity for Mayhem.
-
That is a good idea Bee, hopefuly Martin will see this thread or better still PM him with your idea. He does not bite well he did not the last time I saw him ;D ;D ;D

Plans: http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/Common/Plans.doc
Right, I think these are the agred rules:
18" x 8" inch hull size and floor shape as per plan.
Single Motor up to 540 size ( gearing etc. allowed ) eg. 540/550 / Speed 600. ANY gear / belt / magnetic drive you like!
Power - Up to 7.2 volts
SINGLE RUDDER BLADE TYPE up 4" Sq.
Must have a superstructure of some sort.
You can fit steam if you wish, jet turbines also allowed no IC or Diesel engines or Pulse Jets!
-
So we have "English Rules" then ? Why not stick to the original concept ?
-
I know it's expensive but build one the way you want and another to compete, I may do so at a later date providing others in the club build some.
Andy. :)

Where is the info giving sizes etc for the "Knees" ? The sticky-out football playing bits??
-
Arrow 5 - a bit late but that photo is ART, man.
-
Hi Banjo
The knees are the uprights at the front of the springer, the sticky out bits for football come from B&Q they are doorstops. I have attached a basic diagram of a knee. You can work from this, to be correct a standard springer should have its knees set at 7inch centres.

I extend the knees on my Springers down in to the bottom of the hull.. makes them a HELL of a lot surdier than just 'sticking them on' to the bow / deck.

Which one tobyker ?

Hi Springer builders
I used a product called bendy MDF available from the usual DIY sheds for the base of my springer.
It did the job but it is fairly heavy,so some weight saving on other materials used.
Saturday was great pity about to-day.
Train driver.,

Maybe thiner MDF but having said that, my "Spring a leak every time" Springer has 2 6v 4Ah batteries and still need ballast!
