Title: The BAT.
Post by: KBIO on November 26, 2021, 04:53:44 pm
Hello !
I've bought this Bat's hull this year and I must admit that I would have prefer to have the drawing and do it myself.
But after a bit of work, she is presentable.
As we talked about it in my previous post : Ami Gaël , I open a new topic here.
we already talked about the steam set to put in it.
I agree with the cATON which is a very (Ol') good engine and it will fit perfectly in it.
For the boiler though, I prefer to build mine.
I shall put photos and explanation later on.
For the time being a quick presentation.

To answer to the question concerning the difference in size between the old CATON and the MK II , they are substantially identical .
I'll get back with more photos and infos as I'll have some.
Cheers!

Hello !
First, let's talk about the boiler!
It is 10 cm wide x 12 cm High
It has been designed in order to keep the 6 boiler tubes (32mmx6mm )  in the lower horizontal furnace part .
3 more tubes are in the vertical part and will stay unerneath the water level close to the end.
This is done so to keep steam production as long as possible.
The burner is home made. Notice that there is no secondary air entrance on it. The air supply being around the burner itself.
Just for the fun, the details of the boiler.

Tomorrow, I show the engine in place. :-))

Interesting space saving boiler design, I know little about boiler design, so forgive me for asking, does the design have stays, rods that go through the boiler to connect the two end plates?
Title: Re: The BAT.
Post by: KBIO on November 28, 2021, 04:55:49 pm
Hello!
Using rods to reinforce the boiler and to avoid deformation of the the two end plates is a good idea. Personally , I do not install any when I use plates that are 2mm thick and less that 4'' diam.
And you can see that after reaching 10b (=147psi) the end is still flat.
Photo 1
On the last boiler I did , I use 1,5 mm thick on the top end. And I had a deformation when reaching 6 b(=90psi)  pressure. So I ended up with my steam valve, whistle valve and safety valve bending like the Pisa tower. It took me some sweats to straighten them , and still , it is not perfect.
Photo 2.

Finally, I installed the CATON inside teh BAT.
All is in place and I should be able to steam her up in the coming days.
My only problem left is to be able to get the steam out without going along the chemney = too many elbows. But I may end up to do so. My first intention is to let the steam escaping through the "Tea pot" ! Not sure that I like it ! :embarrassed:
A few pics to get your recommendations.

Hello !
Steam test done today.
8°C in my workshop : gas flow is weak and it took 8 min for the boiler to build up pressure to 3 b. Boiler 1/2 full only.
A bit noisy, I think ! But the CATON  works good.
I need to finalize a few details and finish the set up of the shut off valve , protect the Receiver and some more ...! :-)
Hope you enjoy it.
Have a good night!
Regards.

Bonjour Yves,
Beautiful boat indeed and for the gas, you can transform even a Regner gas tank in liquid phase without adding any complcated plumbing, I did it sucessfuly on my speed steam boat : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TdwdAKIFKE&t=334s

Hello !
The engine has been hidden during the sailing in order to avoid oil spilling all over the place.
I have'nt paint the servos , as Bunkerbarge does , in this boat as there is a roof , but hidden them too.
Batteries charged , oil in place ! Just need to fill up gas and waiting for the sun to get back for sailing.
Thank you for watching !
Regards
PS; first time I charge such a photo! :embarrassed:

Good morning !
You are absolute right Derek ! The engine is not hidden, it is just covered during the sailing to avoid the oil splash all over.
As the launch has a deck to cover the steam plant, so there is no sin to protect the inside when necessary!.
Don't worry, most of the time , the launch is open, as I also like to make the steam plant visible. That is why I build 90% of the time, open launches!

Concerning the top engine (bleed off pressure or oil injector??) , I am working on it ! I am not sure of the interest having them to oil the engine as it will oil the top part only. Maybe as a bleed off for starting !?? But this engine starts and expels the condensation right away when open the boiler ! So ....  %)
Thanks for your comments!Have a good day.

My dear KIBO...apologies, I misunderstood  :embarrassed:  ....but I must admit, I thought you were going crazy  %%

As Engineman shows....even opening the engine space skylights shows the delights  of the engine elements

I am 22,000km away, but do not need to see the antisplash temporary engine cover in a photograph again

Good morning!
Thank you for your encouragements ! I am working out the top elements of the engine , then !
Concerning the sun, Phil! It is so shy this morning that I do not want to make it afraid and having it hidding behind the big black clouds around!
Have a cool good day ! ok2

Hello !
No sun Phil , and as I felt like pressure on me {-) , I've been in my "bouclar" this afternoon. :-)
Tomorrow , I should be able to finish the painting and bolt the top elements on the box.
Regards.

ps: "bouclar" is an old French slung word for a kind of messy workshop in the back yard.

Hello!
Top elements in place.
I need to work out the panel with the 3 gauges. I want to avoid to buy real manometers as it will be expensive for such a small panel. If someone has an idea, I would appreciate.
Thanks for watching.

Thanks Engineman!
You are right, I may end up machining them  . I haver brass this size (+/-)

Print the dial and glue them.
I must have porthole glasses in my drawer , so ....life is beautiful and easy, finally!
Regards.

ps: I love the way you work ! :-))

I used porthole glasses for mine and made pipework for the back out of painted up servo wire:

Good to see "Old school" techniques rather than "Where can I buy". "Green" servo blends in.

Hello!
Today I tried to make my panel. I am not happy with it and I need to do it again. The welding is not clean, the dials are pale and the glass is not clear!  But at least, I know now how to do.
Back to work during the week. Thanks for sharing your ideas! ok2

Hello !
She finally hit the pond ! :-)
As I wrote before, I installed the Caton inside . I had 2 bar only (boiler pressure)  and the Caton needs 3 to 4 b to get enough RPM.
The videos are short but at least I can show a BAT sailing ! Now , clean and store until the text trip !
Have a nice day !

Your model "Bat" looks very impressive on the water and this was a good build thread to follow.

I found this photograph of a model of the "Bat" in the 1987 book 'Radio Control in Model Boats' by John Cundell/Argus Publications.

Hello !
Last weekend  the BAT was out in the wind !
I took the cover off to see how behaves my burner in such a wind !
No problem at all and she enjoyed sailing through the waves.
For a 60 years old engine , all was fine with 3 b pushing !The boiler pressure steady so the gas  tank ! I must say that the temp was about 27°C .
fortunately, the cool bowx was cool ! O0
A pleasure to play with ! :-) :-))

For a 60 years old engine ,
Sorry ! I should have write " 30 years old" <*<

if I am not wrong , this MAX II dates from around 1990.  I hope that someone can tell us more about this engine from Max Hemmens.
Thanks for the comments .
Have a good day. :-)

Hello !
You know what ? I can't find a camecorder anymore ! (unless it is a second hand) . I am so obsolete , dear  (I didn't know ) that I had to change my phone for a new one to be able to film a decent video !
Today , the mobile phone is your arm/brain extension ! If you don't have any , you can't even pay your taxes ! %%
DO YOU BELEIVE IT ?
Nothing can be done without this "thing" ! I understand now , why when I talk to a youngest , he has white objects in his hears. I though that he has hearing problems due to this "bang-bang" music called RAP.  NO ! He is listening something else!
Nowadays , when my grand kids come home for diner, I dress the table in a conventional manner , but I add along  with knifes & forks ,  a clean support for them to watch their phone screen while chewing !
The good thing ! It has not replaced the toilet paper yet ! But for how long ??...  :embarrassed:
I am definitely out of this new world ! But .... is it a bad thing ??
Have a good day listening to the birds ! ok2

There's plenty of camcorcders available if you look online, a quick check on Amazon finds them from cheap to expensive. I wouldn't go for the cheap ones as the quality of the videos is unlikely to be as good as they claim but there are plenty from the major camera manufacturers like Canon, Sony or Panasonic with good resolution and decent optical zoom. Some of the better digital cameras will also take good video but don't have the same physical shape as a camcorder so not so handy to use in one hand. There does seem to be more of a move towards activity cameras such as GoPro and Insta360. These will give good quality videos but generally without optical zoom so you have to rely on a digital zoom which reduces  the image quaility, thay also don't have a large screen so can be harder to see what you are shooting.

Bonjour,
I confirm, smartphones are good for pictures or videos but do not manage correctly the zoom as it is electronic and not mechanical, this is why I go on using both of them.
