Thinking about getting the running gear into my 1/100 scale 8 foot 5 battleship but undecided on what motors to use??
Its been suggested that i use 550 12volt low drain motors but not being knowledgable on the diiferent motors out there i wouldnt know where to start with powering something this BIG.
Anyways i was thinking of using 4 x Graupner 500E motors, 12v nominal running 12,000rpm, max current drain 2amps with a stall current of 10amps. Ive already a pair i was going to use in another model but changed my mind.
Almost forgot the motors will be spinning 4blade 45mm brass props are they up to the job??

12000 rpm is way too much, you arent looking for more than 4000 rpm.

A nice motor is the graupner 720 lowish rpm and a stall curent of 4 to 5 ah . tested it on a prop shop 55m 5 blade at 12v ,tones of thrust only 2 to 3 ah draw . i will be fitting them to my ferry mv celcestine 63" long when my local model shop get them in for me.

When ive got the motors and shafts in i shall post pictures Richard but its going to be a slow slow build.
back on topic which motors would people recommend then or should i just go with the 550 motors????

Hello,
Go with the 720 bb torque motor by graupner. It made for scale boats. The 550 have a much higher rpm than needed so you might lose battery time.

My Tito Neri is fitted with the 720 turbo's and I have had a run time of 2 hours plus and it pulls very well

Those looking at running Graupner motors, might like to take a butchers at the Protech Mega X range.
Same motors, half the price.
i.e. 720BB Mega X was about £16 from 308 Hobbies in Holloway Road.
A 500E equivalent was about £6.
Much cheaper than the prices I saw for Graupner motors.

They have 720's in stock and 500E equivalents. They're always very helpful when I go in there.
Al's tends to specialise more in cars and aeroplanes, they hadn't even heard of these motors when I enquired, and didn't seem to bothered about finding out. Oh well.

Well why don't you contact wingertaz he has just given me a price for a Protech which is half the price of a Graupener exuivellant so me going to try one

hi all went to 308 hobbies and guess what they had 10 in A the start of the month ;D and now they had just sold the last one to day before i got there :(. Protech the importers are out of stock so might be awhile before i get them. None on good old ebay so not sure were to go .

I think i shall wait until someone gives a review on these motors before i invest in 4 of them.
Could protech be the next best motors to have at a affordable price???

Kestral 5 might be the one. I have one, like a Rolls Royce, 5 pole and quiet. O0

kestral 5 look ok but she only go's up to 9 volts as protech will take 12v. Not sure but tht kestral 5 looks like a rebadged 550 not a 720?

Maybe but Deans recommend it for 1:96 scale battleships and heavy models if it is fitted to an Olympus belt drive. I have one and it is really the dogs b****cks.

I have been in touch with Gary (aka wingertaz) at redbank models only to find that some pixies - I suspect Mayhemmers - have snaffled all his stock.
Being the nice bloke that I am I have got my order in for first shout at the next batch so that noise you can hear in the background is me pulling the ladder up whilst singing "I'm all right jack" so there!

hi all just got the last 2 720 motors from channel 4 models ;D. Went on to protech dealer list and started ringing a round good luck. Will let you all know how they are once i get them O0

YUP got one put a 720 in my Tid Tug and it transformed it,had a Buller from MMM direct had to run it on 24v what a load of poo poo.Protech one word to describe it's performance AWSOME

3ins prop as for motor revs to 4200rpm and draws 2amp max so with 2x12v12amp batts fitted to Tug will run for hours

The protech motors are good motors, but I don't understand what is wrong with running on 24 volts.
I prefer higher voltage where possible. More efficient, thinner wiring, less sparking on the commutator. What's not to like?

Simple my friend if the buller had reved up to the same revs as the protech I would have left it alone but it didn't,funny thing this but Derek Garn here on the forum has also thrown them dammed bullers out of his Happy Hunter same problem
