Hi All
I pickup this boat from EBAY UK, yes some do post Global International Postage !!!
Looks like it has been electric all it's life, so only dirty and a bit of TLC.
Well a fair bit !!!
Total paint strip, remove a lot of steel nails and add filler so required.
The drive line is old 2mm and the bearings are shot.
Requires a shaft realignment, so a new 4mm setup is going in.
The rudder is broken away from the shaft, so 3/16" stainless replacement for the shaft.
The plan is to add double spray rails as the boat has none.
Yes the rope on the bow is in the bin !!!!

How similar is the hull to the Waverider? Looks like the same style of construction, thick chunks of ply everywhere!
-
HI Dave
Far different from the Waverider tank, it's more the standard built.
Good plywood, not liteply !!!
Good length 34".
The forward cabin section is a bit off a poor fit, but I filler will fix that.
Canabus
-
I think my Waverider kit predates lite ply - though when I finally build it I will probably substitute lite ply for a lot of the 1/4" stuff in the kit - especially as most of the wood in the kit is unusable after years of poor storage and the appalling manner it was packed to be posted to me.
-
The Princess is a nice size boat and it will look good on the water when it is finished. :-))
-
Very nautical with all that original braided rope Harry %) could have been a UK Armchair Admirals personal boat :P ................. Derek
-
Hi Lads
Well the stripper is in !!!
Paint stripper that is !!!
The braided rope is in the bin.
Removed the drive line and started a dry setup for it.
Started on the boat stand as well.
Also removed a lot of rusty nails from the stern.

Hi All
More paint stripping, removing nails and old filler.
I a hole in the hull bottom which looks like a knot hole in the plywood.
No rot around the area, so a plywood patch on the inside and filler.
Canabus

Smart prop and shaft Harry.
-
Hi All
Filling and sanding today !!!
Lined up the hardware, but may change this when my order arrives.
The chine rails are a bit short at the bow, so I am adding a bit in that area.
A piece damaged a the stern replaced.
Looks like four raised garden beds to make for the boss !!!
That's not to bad, it's filling the dam things !!!
I am guessing four cubic meters of soil .
Canabus
-
Its getting there Harry! :-))
-
Hi Lads
Well the boat is starting to get into shape !!!
Start setting up the motor.
Canabus

Soon be on the water Harry O0

Appears the Armchair Admiral certainly had a quest for speed. O0 ....is this not a high-speed propeller with a dog U drive Canabus?
A blue insert in the Ny-Lok nut....OK, but is this an additional locking pin thru the spanner flat?
Zooooom..... Derek
-
Yes Dog drive setup with Teflon lower bearing and thrust washer.
CNC prop with nylon stainless lock nut.
I do have some 3 blade plastic ones on the way to test.
Started on making the four triangle spray rails from cedar.
Getting these to follow the bottom curve of the hull is going to be fun !!!
Canabus
-
Are you adding triangular strakes to the Wave Rider and the Wave Princess Harry?
-
Hi Zooma
Only Triangle strakes to the Princess as the Waverider is a finished project.
The strakes are made and are heated and weight down on the hull.
It's going to take a few goes to get them right before gluing !!!!
Just another few days of 26C !!!
But that's English winter down under.
Canabus
-
OK - thanks Harry,
I am tempted to make some strakes and fit them to the Wave Rider as it may improve the handling.......and look good too! ;)
Enjoy your nice weather - I am not at all envious :((
-
Hi Zooma
If you rake the rudder shaft angle back about 4 Degrees will also help to keep the bow up in the turns.
As the planning angle is 4 degrees for a planning hull .
Learnt from my IC days with tunnel hulls !!!!

4 degrees is quite a precise angle Harry - I doubt my usual drilling accuracy comes that close in any case - so if I wobble in the right direction I should be OK :embarrassed:
-
Hi All
The strakes/spray rails are on and a coat of resin over the bottom and sides.
Out in the sun to bake, 26C may work !!!
I will just go and buy an air boat for a change .
Canabus
-
Is it possible to have a strake fetish?
We seem to be adding them to every hull that we work on these days!
.......but they do work well on model power boats ........and they look even better!
I like your stylish prop shaft support too :-))
Bob.
-
Hi All
A Strake fetish, well if it works I am all in !!!
So I have been into primer and paint with a few problems.
The hull bottom was fine , but the sides which I did not remove all the old paint.
I paid the price and as the primer started to dry it started to lift off!!!
I removed off with a paint scrapper wet !!!
What a dam mess .
Finally back on track and another lesson learnt !!!

The joys of restoring classic model boats................. <*<
-
I'm probably wrong, again. O0 but isn't the sloped side on the strakes/spray rails on the wrong side? Thought the idea was to assist in not allowing sideways drift.
Regards Ian.
-
Hi Circlip
The Strakes/Spray rails are to design to lift the boat out of the water.
The Chine rails are to stop water spraying up the sides of the boat.
I installed these on my little Diva half cabin cruiser which was not on the plans.
It had little chine rails which did not go the full length of the boat.
I added full length ones.
The strakes which are not in the design, I added and work very well.
I have been playing around in this area with different boats and finally look at the MFA Spearfish hull.
These things have a great turning and straight line performance.
So I am modifying the bottom of my next classic boat into the start of these hull designs.

Strakes aren't really required on models as they have more than enough power to get on the plane. The Club 500 race boats don't have them. I think they are more for looks.
The chine rails do act as spray rails near the bow but further back they aid turning by digging in which is why they should either have a sharp bottom edge or turn down.

Hi All
The cabin area is all painted and just finished making all the windows.
These are only dry fitted at present because I had to get the wheelhouse windscreen done before installing the roof.
The roof is getting the underside painted at present before gluing it on.
Next will be the coffee stick decking with a bit of stain .
Another experiment !!!!
Harry
-
Its getting close to being finished now Harry, and another classic r/c powerboat will be rescued and live to see another day! :-))

I totally agree Bob and saving these old models from an unknown fate is what it's about for me.
The next job (for me) is to do something with all of these 'saved models'
Looking forward to seeing how this one performs Harry. No doubt it will manage scale speed (and a bit) knowing you ok2 :-))

Hi Zooma
Just TLC and a love of old classic boats.
Plus I like the roof goes right back to the windscreen for a cleaner look.
May add that in my Stiletto redesign with a bit more angle forward on the windscreen.
Lovely Autumn day with sunshine blue sky and some white clouds .
I did not take the pictures until 7PM tonight !!!

Hi Lads
I have dropped the idea of the beastly 3648-1450kv (1600Watt) motor and planning on the less powerful C3542-1450kv(1050Watt) motor.
But running it on 3S not 4S.
Harry
-
The Turnigy T3648-1450 motor is certainly a powerful unit.
It shoved my (comparatively heavy) 39 1/2" Rapier along at a very impressive pace on 3S.
I have acquired a couple more of these motors as I have found nothing to match them yet - and now that bigger capacity LiPo cells are more readily available at an affordable price, I should be able to get longer run times from them too.
3S is plenty for this motor - 4S would be seriously impressive!
It would be a superb choice motor for your lengthened Swordsman (Sea Raven) project :-))
-
Hi Zooma
Try the 3648-1450kv on 4S, it really gets a fire in it's belly !!!
I have a 1520kv in the Swordsman, just a bit more beans under the hood !!!!
I have a 3674-1900kv on 4S in the Javelin, but I will have to drop prop size to 38mm as the Lipo 130C has not got enough juice in it.
It drains the battery very, very quick !!!
Six long runs and it starts losing power.
Harry
-
To emphasise your point ChrisF re the chine rails, couple of years ago on the forum, the non fitting of these on a fire tender resulted in the back sides "Sucking in" on turns. Retrofit solved the problem.
Regards Ian.
-
Harry, I'm sure that even with the slightly less powerful motor and 3s battery rather than 4s, it will still perform well, as all of your boats seem to. You have obviously found yourself a good power combination.
Will

Harry
Your are doing very well getting 6 long runs!
I was only getting 8 mins (max) on each run with a new freshly charged (well balanced) 3C 5400mah LiPo pack on the Rapier and fitting a smaller prop had no real advantages........ it went slightly slower.......and only added a few more seconds (at best) to the duration.

Hi All
Well after a little break, I am back at the boat !!!
The front windows are in and one side window in the wheelhouse .
Started on the decking in the wheelhouse, stern and deck.
Using Banjo coffee sticks with a Jarrah wood stain.
The outer deck strip is Cedar strips, but it's going to be interesting side ways bending these towards the bow ???
Also added the roof to the wheelhouse, but not painted on top.
I did paint it underneath in white and glued it on after.
Harry
-
What a difference that's going to make to the look of it Harry. Very nice.
-
Hi All
Just a bit more decking, but off to Banjo's for more coffee stir sticks !!!
Oh, the coffee and an Apricot Danish to keep my strength up !!!
Canabus
-
Get them while you can - I see a move towards those oval shaped stirring sticks (bamboo?) recently in some of the coffee shops - no good at all for decking >>:-(
-
Hi All
Finished the bow decking and trim back the outer edges to add the kick plank.
Only matt vanishing the deck to do.
Also started painting the cockpit cabin roof.
Installed the rudder servo and mounted the motor( C3542-1450kv).
Installed all the windows.
Canabus

Very smart Harry, makes a big difference to the look of the boat and a huge change from what it was like when it arrived with you.

Hi Lads
Well, the boat is ready for the sea trails tomorrow.
Full system check today with the motor and rudder moving in the right directions !!!
Grease up the rudder and drive shaft with silicon waterproof tap grease.
Hope it floats !!!
Harry
-
Looks great, a fine rescue.

Hi All

Video from today !!!
The boat requires the battery moved forward, but, it floats and goes!!!
Well, it was better than the hairy plane !!!

Well done Harry, she's certainly up to your usual standard of performance and looks absolutely great on the water.
A great rescue and resto.
