Fleet build for Mayhem @ Wicksteed 2022 ?! ...... :-)
are you meaning a 1/350 RC fleet?
you could get some from both sides and a mini battle going %)
-
Gives me some motivation to get my Tirpitz finished

Or a bit different for the same price from e-models!
-
It must have been amazing seeing these contraptions in the flesh.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ygXLnRAm-A&t=762s
However, the French pre dreadnoughts and armoured cruisers were rather top heavy and a small model would be pretty unstable at that size.

I have this sitting ready to build....

Hi Colin,
At that scale there's unlikely to be any significant difference with any of them. Don't forget that some of us have practiced with the 1/144 Flowers! Dreadnought, Szent Istvan (ala Gingyer) are both about 1.1lbs at 1/350 while Danton or Voltaire are marginally less but being 10% shorter could be more stable being slightly wider but with the same (1.5mm less to be honest) draft as Szent Istvan. Hopefully, should something go ahead, nothing like this should happen to anyone! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeiNcf7JtCM
:embarrassed: Cheers Tony
-
Hi Gingyer, so you're dragging in the poor old Austro-Hungarian Empire? Does that give me permission to include Les Francaises?
%) Tony
She's a lovely ship whatever flag she flies :-))
-
I don’t see why the french ships won’t be there.
Maybe if we start a thread in the mayhem section others maybe interested
-
I'd check the likely weight of the kit first. Gross displacement at 1:350 is about 18-20oz so by the time you take out the hardware and a bit of ballast you'd need to see how much you've actually got to play with! I know with the 1:144 Flower that, for example, I took the casing off the Rx. and carved a rather large hole in the underside of the bridge construction. But it worked, so an 18-20" Battleship could be "Interesting".
:-))
-
Back in the 70's there were articles in Model Boats with conversions of the Airfix liners although they were not R/C. I have actually got a stash of these old liner kits which I might build as R/C versions some day.

CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!If anyone is considering the Lutzow or Derfflinger by Takon and shown by both e-models and Hannants at 1/350. Please note that e-models have confirmed that they're 1/700! I'm awaiting an e-mail from Hannants confirming it.
Meanwhile, Hannants show Lord Nelson, Agamemnon, Seydlitz, plus a couple of early Chinese warships Ting Yuen and Chen Yuen, plus Tsarevitch from Russia and Mikasa from Japan. Also, for the really adventurous, Mclass and Kclass subs plus Surcouf!

Also have to mention that apart from being 1/700 scale they are the 2013 edition of the Flyhawk kits minus the big etched brass sheet which has all the railings on. They are good kits but I was under the impression that they would be Takom’s own work.
-
I've got the HobbyBoss Agamemnon on it's way. £49 including p/e stuff. About 15inches/1lb so worth trying. Slow and old like me! :-))

Sounds like a nice few ships then getting done…..
It’s going to be fun trying to get them working

Yup AND just think how much fun you can have playing in the bath {-)

Agamemnon arrived. Rather good kit with zero flash and some nice etch stuff.

Got mine today too!
Except I’ve gone for the Russian predreadnought Oriol by Zvezda.
Not a bad kit but has a few minor bits of flash. Plenty of access using the kit parts though. Got some prop shafts and props on the way too!

I have too many projects on the go, so it’s time for a clear-out of a few of them which I’m unlikely to finish. This extremely rare Maycraft Mercury dates back to 1962. Length is 38”, beam is a generous 11”.
The box is a mess but the kit is complete down to the glazing, metal window frames, rails and stanchions.
Maycraft were not around for long but produced superior kits using quality materials and accurately cut components – this was reflected in the price – the Mercury was about twice the price of an Aerokits Sea Commander or 34”crash tender.
The superstructure part of the plan is missing but this should not be an issue. All parts are accurately cut and numbered and the instructions are excellent. The one piece cabin is straightforward and is built around a deep coaming.
As can be seen, the hull is ready for skinning. The Enya 35 will be left in place. The toothed pulley has a 1 way bearing fitted as I intended to have on-board start via an MFA geared motor, hence the lack of a groove in the flywheel. On reflection I think an electric motor would be the better option.
-
There was an r/c plane by the name of Mercury Matador way way back in time but they had a different logo.

there'd be a fb page too for Mercury Models too.

Rubber gloves, and belt sanders [or any gloves] and belt sanders [or grinders] are not a safe way to spend a day >>:-( Derek
-
I have had one of those Aldi sanders for a couple of years, the angle markings are inaccurate but if you set it up correctly it are excellent at the jobs it can do.
A great tool for the price.
-
Hi,
I was in Aldi in Polmont yesterday and they have the cheap little blue mini tool kits back in stock again. Not great quality by any stretch (the drills are very soft and you have to remember not to grab one of the reverse twist ones) but OK little kits at at £7.99 each. I picked up a few more kits to bolster supplies for modelling purposes so that will last me another 6 months before I feel the itch again. There is a blade holder set similar to the files that take a jigsaw blade -I already had that kit but couldn't find it for this photo...

I would like one of these but the weight gives me cause for concern. I cannot mount it permanently and the thought of moving 17.5kg whenever I want to use it is daunting. What is the experience of others?
-
It is definitely heavy to move very far, but I can manage it within the workshop. Definitely needs a strong person to move more than a couple of metres.
It should be secured to the bench when in use, it has a powerful motor.

Lidl have some stuff at the moment that might interest the modeller, there is a small bench disc sander (like the Aldi one on the previous page minus the belt sander) for £35, there is a box of clamps but my local store has still boxes of 6 small clamps for I think £4 that seemed better for modelling
Also packs of sanding paper and masking tape, and some superglue all cheap as usual.
Can’t find the sander on the website, but it’s this one: https://youtu.be/QyrTnZU4g48 (https://youtu.be/QyrTnZU4g48)

Hi Martin, they have that one as well, but this is the one I bought that does not seem to be on the UK website for some reason:

I thought the angle fence might be helpful (assuming its not that accurate of course) and I liked the fact it has a attachment for vac hose to take away the dust a bit.

Evening...waiting2retire .... {-)
I too am now retired and have the Proxxon [TG125E original?] version of this bench or desk mounted disk sander...[my rating is 10/10]
The version you have looks near identical...treat it with respect...do not clog the sanding disks
You will love your machine
My Proxxon was probably x 4 times the $ what you paid.......you are fortunate <*< as the generic version was not available in years gonebye
Enjoy the fragrance of real wood after cutting and accurate sanding from your machine :-))

-
Hi Derek, yeah it looks good - although I confess mine is still in the box at the moment!
I knew I had seen something like it on the forum somewhere, I think it was in one of the mega-tug builds, but I had forgotten what the original was called. Your looks a bit more deluxe, that material guide is metal with a fancy handle to make adjustments I note!
For £35 or about $65 AUD (minus 10% with the Lidl App) I could not resist adding it to the workshop, it can go next to the Lidl pillar drill and behind the Aldi grinder %)
