Hi guys!
I'm not too sure what to use to make my mast for my 1/12 tid, the base is around 12mm & the top is slightly thinner (around 8mm) & is around 50cm in length, I'm thinking of using some 12mm wooden dowel from B&Q! and then sanding it to the desired shape, but i only have hand tools so this will be quite difficult to get the finish i want, but if need be this is what i will have to do!
Anyone have any other suggestions please :) ?

I may depend on the length, maybe a large artist's paint brush? :-)
-
Geat idea but too short, id need one 50cm long!

Haven’t you got handheld power drilll? Just run up a piece of dowel or hardwood in that.
-
Broken fishing rod (Tackle shop junk bin) then cut out the section you need. :-))

In the distant past, before I had a power drill, I held a hand drill in a vice, and used that. Just turn the handle, wrap sandpaper around the dowel and turn, working the paper to get the taper. A few minutes and it was done. Cut the dowel over length because the drill will chew up the end and you'll need to cut that off when you've finished. If you have a razor plane, you can put a rough taper on the dowel first then get the final shape with the sandpaper, just don't take too much off with the plane.

Try your local fishing tackle shop, they sometimes have a bin for old or broken fibreglass or even carbon fibre rod sections that may be the size you want.Dave

great stuff, thanks guys some good suggestions, i never thought about using my powered drill to turn the piece of dowel :-))

A few sheets of 80 grit sand paper would have had you well on your way before any suggestion of a power drill. It just makes it easier and quicker!!!
....for lighting to save a post, you could cut a vee along one side to pass cables down.

If you need a hollow mast, telescopic brass tubing soldered, layered with Bondo, sanded to a taper.

How thick are golf club shafts…..I know they taper but could you get the right length / diameter out of an old putter shaft?

Squires have 10mm brass tube as well as 15/32" - 21/32".There should be something there to fit.
