Some years ago a local man donated a model of a scratch built J Class yacht to our club (Southport Model Boat Club). After refurbishment she is a show stopper every time she goes on the water. She has real grace and beauty. She is approx 54" o.a.l. and stands over 72 " when rigged.
It has been decided to make a mold of the original so that club members can have the opportunity of building their own version.
Does anyone know where fittings can be purchased for the yacht? I understand there is a supplier somewhere in Hull but as it is Yorkshire I am not sure if us Lancastrians are welcomed there (Keep out of this everyone, this is a private love/hate relationship!)
I would be very grateful for any help.

I think that works out at about 1:30 scale.
I know Amati do the 1:35 fittings cant find any 1:30 yet.

Right Gentlemen
First of all abject apologies.
it is NOT a J class, It is an A class.
Had a quick measure up at the pond today. Hull is 72" o.a.l. I am slightly desparate to hear of stockists, the mold is being produced this week and I have put my name down for a hull.
I hav'nt told SWMBO yet - do you think she will notice it??

Yes she has a bowsprit, For further details you may want to p.m. firstmate as is obvious he is the chap who restored her.
As a matter of interest how would you compare the carbon fibre mast with an aluminium groovy mast? have you got C.F. booms as well?
Sadly I have tried contacting a couple of suppliers about the masts but no one wants to talk to our club at the moment. The nearest specialist supplier to us is Housemartin Sails but I understand they may be in New Zealand at the moment.

Hi Clegg, hope you had a good Xmas and have got over the indigestion by now :-\ .
IMO if you are not racing in a serious way I would not bother with the carbon fibre mast as weight is not a big factor. Also and by no means least, the costs are way less for al. groovy ! O0
To answer the second question, no I have gone for the cheaper option of black anodised aluminium
Now I have to get back to serious training for the next big social event on the 31st :-X :-X

Thanks for that, I think that an ally groovy mast is going to be the way to go.
Sorry to do this but I have another question.
In practical terms what is the difference between for example a No1 & a No2 sail set? is it different weights of sail for different wind strength? and if so I would welcome your views on the best compromise for all round use.

Hi Clegg just caught up with things again after putting a second hard drive in and getting totally lost trying to be smart a-sed !!
To try and answer your other question, yes the Nos 1,2 &3 sail sets are for different wind strengths and this is reflected in the different weights of material/areas/mast heights etc. The time to change down to 2's then 3's will vary between yacht designs. There is a compromise that will depend on your sailing water ie at Gosport where I sail it is more often light winds, consequently as yet I have only purchased a No1 suit and can sail most meetings. Around Fleetwood way I think the wind might be fresher on average and may suit No2's, but maybe someone from that neck of the woods can advise.

I can be fairly sure that the winds here are similar to those at Fleetwood; Variable!!!
Here at Southport we our pond is fairly exposed but we are intending sailing on the marine lake when we have a flotolla of 5 Class "A"s on the water - mainly because no-one else would get a look in on our pond with a decent number of quite large boats about. The marine lake is a huge expanse of water with a mixture of sheltered and exposed areas.
I will take further advice as you suggest but I reckon that a set on No2s will serve the purpose.

Following on to the above very helpful replies, does anyone know of any sail equipment suppliers in the North of England? I have been trying to contact HouseMartin sails by interweb and telephone with no luck. (I think there may be a chance that the owners are in N.Z.)
As yet we are having no luck in finding a supplier here in't north 'oo want ter do a bitter bizniss wi' our club
Oh Sod just asking for the North, apart from sailsect (who have kindly supplied a catalogue),is there anybody who wants to supply the fittings and sail sets for an initial build of 5 A Class yachts??? Contact myself or firstmate.

Yes, we have 5 club members with confirmed orders and we expect to double that number.
We are already making provisional plans for our club regatta to have the sailing "element" held on the marine lake here at Southport.
You will understand that we are keen to have a club standard within the class rules and it would help us a great deal if we had suppliers knocking our club door down desperate to sell us their wares but alas this is not the case.

Strangely enough I was browsing PJ's pdf catalogue yesterday evening.
My main reason for wanting to speak to someone "up here" is that I do like to meet traders face to face where possible. It gives me confidence in the person I am sending my beer vouchers to and confirms for them that I am indeed stupid!

I understand your reluctance to squander those hard earned beer vouchers :P :P Peter is a member of our club and helped me out solving my through deck mast slot on the Orca and didn't seem to be too concerned that I, like you, suffer from occasional (!) bouts of 'stupid' ! :D :D
