Whats the best way to attach tyres round the hull, for fenders.

I work on a tug which has tyres fitted much to my hate! they are a pain in the #### (stern) but you could try hanging them the same way to get that realistic view.
Ours are hung on chain but you could get away with cord then glue it to the deck level outside the commings.
drill two small holes in the tread area and then run the chain through the holes so that the ends come out via the center this will hold the tyre up and also stop it from twisting while the vessel is under way.

on my tug Brakengarth i fitted the rear fenders to the tow line fender by snap swivells fron my fishing box

I built a 1/24 Scale Damen Stan Tug a couple of years ago & I fitted around 40 tyres on the hull...
I used a brass eyelet kit from the Blackspur range of tools to fit the fenders...
I drilled a series of holes along the bulwark of the tug & 2 holes in each tyre...I then fitted a brass eyelet into each of the holes.. I then passed a small chain through the holes in the tyre & then passed both ends of the chain through the eyelet fixed on the bulwarks...The chains were in a triangular shape by this time...Adjust the chain so that the tyres are all in a nice row then pass a small piece of brass rod through the 2 chains on the inside of the bulwarks, This acts as a locking pin...Put a wee bit of glue on the inside to hold everything in place...Here is a picture of the finished article...

I prefer your method Norry.
Much better than mine, as they swivel sometimes and show the bad side outwards.

Those look like plastic ones. I much prefer the rubber ones (I got some more at the show from Model Slipway) and they are the same on BOTH sides so it doesn't matter if they do swivel.

Gosh .. you're right about the chains scratching the paint.
I shall modify them as soon as I can, Harrin.
The tyres are single sided, as supplied by Model Slipway in the Kit. Perhaps we are supposed to join them, bad sides together?? How much are the rubber ones, Druid. ?

43mm diameter - 60p each or £7-00 for 12 (actually the ones I got at the Show were for Stavros)

Its the cost of living going up :embarrassed: even the plastic ones were 45p each !! Anyway you only wanted 6 and you won't have to pay any postage ;)

The tyres that I used were rubber tyres from Model Slipway...They look really good when fitted in this way...
Anyway, whats this about the chains scratching the paint...Its a model of a working tug not a family cruiser or a gin palace that we are building...Of course the chains will mark the paint if you dont handle the tug properly & go around hitting things...
The marks on the paint make it look more like a real tug....
I,ve only ever worked on one tug that was treated like a yacht...It had to be sold because it wasn,t paying its way...The owners were too particular about what we done or where we went...

try car boot fairs etc for old toy cars etc the larger cars usually have rubber tyres you can pull off and recycle on your boats!
