I've been in Montreal in -32 C, dipping tanks on deck as we bunkered. Any fuel that dropped onto the deck became solid and brittle and you could break it by hitting it with a spanner.

Reminds me of one of my models in my workshop. :( Must treat myself to some heat this winter. ;)

Used to tie up at that berth every trip, sometimes in a similar state but maybe not quite as bad. I think it is Sompasaari in Helsinki, by the way,

Is that not a Brittany ferry ?, if so whats it doing in Helsinki ?
-
Probably refitting. I may be able to find out more.

It's a Russian ferry that sometimes does cruises out of Tilbury in the summer. (At least I think it's the same one I have seen in the Thames) In winter I think it does the Estonia or St Petersburg run. Somewhere under all the ice is a name - I've tried heavy breathing on it but it won't melt ! {-)
Capt Jack - I wouldn't have thought Brittany ferries get iced up very often, or the places they run to get much in the way of harbour ice (except in 1962 but the ship isn't that old !)

that funnel band makes me think its russian, could be a baltic ferry

looking at the bow hard to tell but theres no bow visor that lifts up or cam shell door , so doubt it brittany ferry. Looking at the bow near the water line hard to tell but looks like it was designed for ice, all of which would say if correct that she is a baltic ferry / cruise ship. john

Before I had to pack in the merch., my last outfit for twenty odd years was United Baltic Corp and when on the Finnish run we were up in Helsinki every 10 days or so. The reason I say it is a Russian Ferry is that I have seen her many times in the Gulf of Finland either alongside, heading to and from St Petersburg (Still think of it as Leningrad !), across to Tallin, or outwards down the Baltic. Believe me it ain't a Brittany Ferry

Let you into a secret! I posted the picture on the Brittany Ferry Enthusiasts Website and of course somebody there had seen it before and knew it wasn't a BF ship. If you don't know the answer then a bit of low cunning helps!

A man of true cunning so low you could crawl under a snake's belly :o :D
