Forum members, I need your input.
I am about to order the Arleigh Burke Class DDG 1:72 scale and the freight box it comes in will hold more kits/hulls at no extra cost in freight charges. The delivery time will be 4 months plus (time to build) and in no hurry as I have other projects on the go.
I have not had a lot of experience building with fibreglass and plasticard as I am of the total plywood era.
I love warships of both the WWII and modern times including fairly large models, say up to 100" as transport is not an issue.
In looking through a catalogue here of many kits of the US, UK, Australian and Russian Navy's, I cannot make up my mind as to which kit to add to the order -
With the vast experience of forum members, can you please give me some ideas as I need to place the order by the end of the month prior a price increase.
Note: These kits will not be built for some time - future projects -
Thanks

What about Sirmars HMS ARUN?
Don't know anything about the kit, just think it's a great looking vessel!

martin you could have airbrushed the locomotive out, or are buffers and a chain coupling a new addition to the kit?

{-) {-) {-) {-) I forgot about that!!! - It's a training ship! {-) {-) {-) {-)
Here another shot or two...

I was thinking on the lines of :-River class or Anzac class or Type 42 or Leander class or Daring class or Type 22 or Tribal class or Krivak or Charles F Adams DDG or L & M class Destroyer and the list goes on.
Something that will look good on the water, with punch, with class - You know what I mean >:( >:( >:(

For presence on the water you have to go a long way to beat a Type 22, they are just have so much above the waterline.

Dumb Question of the Month :embarrassed: :embarrassed:
With respect to Type 22 Frigates - What does the Batch 1, 2 & 3 refer to :embarrassed: :embarrassed:
Martin

Batch 1, 2 and 3 describe the way they were ordered and built.
The first ones were ordered and built, hence batch1, but don't think they had the 4.5 inch armament.
The next ones to be built had the improvement of the 4.5 from build, hence batch 2.
This is where my memory gets a bit suspect, the batch 3 were either a bit longer or wider than the batch 2.
I am sure someone on here will be able to give a definitive answer.
The different batches are as the ships are improved or changed at build.

Type 22 Batch 1 HMS Broadsword. O0
-
The basic differences were:
The batch 1
had a short stubby bow
was armed with execet + seawolf missiles + torpedo's
Batch 2
The bow was made longer and increased the sea keeping abilities (apparently)
was armed as above
Batch 3
Kept the longer bow Had the Flight deck and hanger increased in size to cope with larger helicopters
(this happened to some of the late batch 2s)
was armed with 4.5" gun, Sea wolf + harpoon missiles, a goalkeeper CIWS was also added + torpedo's

The type 22's are looking good - If I go ahead with a type 22, which model would you build first -
the 22 or the Arleigh Burke.
Hmmmm..... but which Type 22 :-\
Thanks gingyer for the second time today O0

I would go for the Type 22.
Look at the thread of Holmsey building his Type 22.
Lots of help and pics there.

Bob,
Thanks re your advice, I agree the Type 22 as per the Holmsey build would be the way to go. I have also seen his thread on the Arleigh Burke and boy, does he build a nice model with plenty of pic's including very willing to help out other modellers.
Now this is the main reason that I have registered on this forum. In general, when I have asked a question, regardless of how dumb it may sound due not having a background in navy etc, the forum members, moderators and administrator have given sound advise and direction. All are quite free with advice, help, friendly and courteous with one or two jokes thrown in to boot.
I wish to thank all that have contributed to this thread and all other threads I have posted. It's been a real pleasure :) :) :) :) :) :)

Hi martin
GO for the Batch 3 O0
It is just a classic (this is the same as Holmsey's)
-
Martin,
That is the exact reason that Mayhem started this forum.
But always remember that you as a member are part of it too.

Hello,
What manufacturer is building in 1/72 scale? If your looking at kits I would only go with Sirmar. He has a good selection of kits. Scale Ship Yard is another one if you are looking for US ships. Check with his delivery time because it can be long. As we all know by now be careful of kits from China. Something with presence you could go with the Aegis/Tico class.
Best Regards,
Sean

Sean,
I purchased the Arleigh Burke DDG 1:72 scale from APS Models in Australia as most of their semi-kits are at this scale. Fleetscale also have some kits at 1:72 and I believe PSShips/Sirmar will also in 2008. I currently have 3 Aussie boats but now am looking for something different...

if you want a large boat, Fleetscale do the hull and superstructure of the Yamato battleshp at 1:96 scale
