Here are some pictures of my new Pilot Cutter the 1808 Charlotte - made for me by Waverley Models - boy is it heavy with 20lbs of ballast !? :D

I think Mike was well pleased as well, he was bending my ear about her when I rang my order through the other week.

Looks great ,how do you find her sailing characteristics?I have a French fishing boat (see this section of the forum) this seems to be very similar to the English cutters also Gaff rigged and needing 20lds of lead to get her down to the water line. I have found that compared to a Thames sailng barge which I have, you need to think well ahead of yourself, she also sails much better in a bit of a blow.

So far I find that in a light wind, she tends to not do too much. However once the wind strengthens a little she handles well and has a good turn of speed
Mike and another guy were both building Charlottes at the same time, and during one test sail they had the initial comment was that it was one of the best ships either of them had sailed
This morning as the wind was so light, i got my Y2k out instead and she covered all points of our lake, with varying speeds.
Now for the next one to source for my collection, I fancy a Cariad ;)

The pilot cutter is a fibre glass hull, with planked deck etc and represents from memory a ship built in 1809 in the Bristol area.
The Morecambe Bay Prawner (also known as a Nobby) was a plank on frame model which I recently acquired. Waverley Models I believe sell a fibre glass hull, taken from this particular model.
Both lovely boats to sail, the Nobby in particular has a tremendous turn of speed.

"The Witch of Endor". wasn't that the vessel that Hornblower returned to England in having escaped from the French?

I think in this case that the "Witch of Endor" to which Stavros is referring is a model based on the Kingston Mouldings hull of the "Mascotte" which he sold recently on behalf of a fellow club member. A very nice boat but although named the "Witch of Endor" it isn't actually a model of the Hornblower boat.

A naval cutter lies in my future. I got the "Anatomy of a ship - cutter Alert" out of the library.
ALL detail need to build it perfectly is in there, but not the skill and workmanship in a packet.
She is clinker built, which surprised me, and carries a SERIOUS press of sail; given her shallow hull. Must have been a busy life for the crew.
I don't have her dates in mind, but I feel that "Witch of Endor" that Hornblower retook must have been about the same era.
I havn't read the book for 40 years or so but I would have thought that handling the main would have taked a lot of effort with a scratch crew - I seem to remember that they also liberated a few matelots from prison - perhaps CS Forrester was thinking like I was about hoisting that main.
Cutters wouldn't really balance at all with any other sail combination? Maybe a jib and (F&A) topsail would give some way and be less heavy to handle.

I hereby throw my hat - or more appropriatley , model - into the ring and attach a few shots of my pilot cutter, a yacht conversion based on 'Cariad'
'Sian is !:15 scale and with the exception of its' GRP hull (courtesy of Chris Brown, Cardiff) is entirely scratch built.
The model weighs 17lbs (including 9.7lbd internal ballast), has neutral helm ,and sails beautifully in all wind conditions bar hurricane force! The scale size rudder has been provided with a removable rudder extension which offers improved directional control.
Standing and running rigging (the latter is functional and utilises home made sheaved blocks) have been slightly modified, and the bowsprit and topmast are retractable. These features permit ease of transportation and setting up at the waterside.
If any reader is interested I'll post more fotos (including a few under sail) and will be happy to answer any questions should the need arise.
