Does anyone have a drawing or picture(s) of early style tug tow "hooks". This would be a type suitable for early paddle steam tugs. I understand these were more like a spring mounted clevis than the tradidtional hook design. Any help is apprecuiated.

Best book for that is 'British Steam Tugs' by PN Thomas - ISBN 0 905184 07 6 First published 1983 by Waine Research. Full of useful stuff for you.
Rare though - I got mine via Amazon but they're few and far between.

Ive had a look through the P N Thomas book when you first posted because I thought that I had seen one in it but could not find one.
have you tried a post on as they are very helpfull on there

Thanks for mentioning that book. I have it in my library and it does show two types of hooks in the back of the book. I'm enquiring for a friend of mine who is building a paddle tug. He has a distant photo of the "hook", but it doesn't show clearly and appears to be different from those shown in the PN Thomas book. I do appreciate your assistance .

My drawings were from a 1920 patent for steam tugs. Were not quite the same as yours oldiron. O0

I agree, that brass work is absolutely beautiful. A true artist, almost hate to paint it.

In one of my old books I have a small wood paddler tug of 1890 aground, she was about 170 ft in length, she had a large towing Samson post and in the pic the towing junk was coiled around it. I believe she was one of the old Sunderland tugs.
