With a motorist's profession having a big bearing on the premium that they pay for their car insurance, it has been revealed by insurance comparison website Confused.com that professional footballers pay the most for their cover.

Research revealed that a 32 year-old footballer with a maximum no claims discount driving a Ford Mondeo LX in London would pay an average premium of £1,348 to car insurance companies for cover. At the other end of the scale however, a male secretary with matching circumstances would pay just £501, on average, for the same policy.

Behind footballers, comedians and stuntmen can also be expected to pay a hefty sum of money for their car insurance, with the average cost of cover for someone with the same profile coming in at £1,113 and £1,069 respectively.

Fortune tellers, circus workers, mini-cab drivers, journalists, builders, bee keepers, bin men and driving instructors were also among the most costly professions for car insurance. Police officers, paramedics, bank managers, doctors, lawyers, teachers and firemen, on the other hand, were found to be among the cheapest.

Debra Williams, managing director of Confused.com, said: "Insurers assess risk in many different ways, one of which is profession. While one insurer may have a terrible claims history for footballers, another may not. This is why it is vital to shop around for insurance."

In June, Confused.com reported that using alternative ways to describe the same occupation could lead car insurance premium savings of as much as 33 per cent.ADNFCR-1058-ID-18305502-ADNFCR

Some time ago (a long time ago) a gentlemen came to our workshop and tried to entice people to buy Life Insurance.
He was there for the best part of 2 hours and I wondered why he did not come to see me ( not that I wanted Insurance). Later I asked the lads what was the problem, apparently they told the gentlemen that on weekends I go parachuting...Hmmmm ::) ::)

Hey Dicky - how come 'fortune tellers' have to pay more?
I'd have thought that - "with the ability to see the future" - they'd be a pretty safe bet ........

the money saving expert was on radio 2 this aft where he claimed a quote of £20. something using the comparison sites on the net and then using a cash back service  against the quote offering £50. back if their quote was not beaten .
sounds confusing but i might as well give it a try as my insurance is due soon .

Going for the cheapest is not always the best option - you need to look at the conditions etc. very carefully. Also, do a bit of Googling to see how willing the insurer is to pay out promptly and in full on a claim.

I seem to have bucked the trend for ever increasing motor premiums. Mine's been reducing year on year for four years now!? Loyalty, perhaps, as I've been with the same insurer for around 15 years, and they've always been cheapest, whoever I've phoned for quotes.

I now pay £268 for a 3 year old Focus, fully comp, business use cover, uninsured loss, courtesy car, the works. Last year I had to have a new windscreen, I only paid a small excess, then someone scraped me while I was parked outside my house. One phone call to my broker was all it took and everything else was taken care of. I had to pay the £50 excess up front, but got it back a month later.

I wondered what the premium would do in November, but it went down again. I'm sticking with them.  :)

The price comparison sites and AA etc don't seem to quote from my insurers, maybe that's why they're cheaper - no middle men (other than the broker, who actually does provide a service and isn't just a voice on the phone).

Oh, the insurer is NIG, by the way.

Andy

I'm a dab-hand at nicking cars, me. Living a life thus, it means I avoid the rip-off insurers. So far I've mown down seventy-two traffic wardens and one Michael Winner... all without one single insurance claim in sight.

Hi Andy, we are with NIG as well and the insurance for my wifes Ford Thunderbird (300BHP, 4.6 litre V8 coupe)
has just gone down this year to £194 full comp which is amazing when you consider the performance of this car!!!!!!
I also insure my motorcycle with them (£220 full comp) and my Chevy Dayvan (£109 full comp)

Mark.

The best deal must be for classic car insurance. My Austin 7 costs me £48 fully comp, with free breakdown recovery included. Oh, and no road tax either!

On TV programme yesterday they said that drivers' insurance isn't compulsory in New Zealand, is that right??

£48 fully comp! Mind you, that car doesn't go fast enough to have an accident. ;) (Ducks down low to avoid incoming!)
That's how much I paid to insure my first car, a Vauxhall Viva HB, back in 77. That was 10% of the value of the car, for TPFT cover as a learner driver. I bet today's youngsters would like to pay just 10% of their car's value when they're starting to drive.

In Australia we pay what is called a registration fee, this also includes third party insurance, but not for vehicles mainly people, comprehensive varies greatly over here as well, for instance I have a medium sized four cylinder car which costs $246.00 per year for insurance, which I reckon is pretty cheap, but if you want to you do not have to insure...............

Hi Andy,

Not fast enough to have an accident - true, but slow enough to cause one! To be fair, there is also a mileage restriction on the classic car policy, but as well as free recovery it also includes replacement at an agreed value, which is a lot better than lots of fully comp policies offer nowadays.

My wife was with Direct Line for some years as when she first went with them they were the cheapest, last year she got her quote for a 1.9 diesel Astra and it was £500. I asked the RAC and they offered her the same if not better one for £170. I tried one of these compare programmes for my car which was quoted £250 with the RAC and one of the cheapest I could get was £326. But when I rung the RAC and said I was compulsory retired last year by MoD it went down to £232. So best profession is retiement and low mileage.

the legalised gambling about which you speak is a major ripoff. The variance in pricing can vary through the day depending upon the targets that the person has to hit.

It certainly pays to shop round but I would rather use a decent broker that you can sit in front of than wait forever on the phone, it costs a little more maybe - but I know that I can always rant at the same person!

BUT  -  bear this in mind, if you use a phone based service and they neglect to ask you the correct questions to which you are obliged answer correctly -You may not be insured! a lot of people don't read the policy documents and just assume they're covered - and the companies WILL look for ways not to pay your damages.
You lie about job, address, penalty points - non disclosure - no cover.

These pearls of wisdom apply to all insurances, not just your cars. Classic case in point - travel insurance, have you ever had? and you forget to mention it cause it was so long ago - then you have a relapse, get stuck abroad....non-disclosure, no cover - HUGE bill  - stuck!
