test smoke unit  >:D

She went very very well on the water imo probs dosnt need a bow thruster as it turns anyway with out it but i guess it will help at some point

Iv got some bad vids of when she was run :)  tbh i was only testin it at this point so didnt have everything set up
(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc127/offshore1987/th_HPIM0599.jpg) (http://s214.photobucket.com/albums/cc127/offshore1987/?action=view&current=HPIM0599.flv)

i done something alittle silly well two things lol its abit late im sleepy and drillin and i drilled a hole in the wronge place "opps" you might be able to spot it maybe  ;D

lights are in, just gota put spot lights on ( holes already drilled ) but i pulled the wire alittle to hard and had to cut the shrink tube off "opps again" but solderd back on just gota get some more shrink tube today then fit them on and all sorted, also pipe work is all glued now

pics here

shows size of the 12v 12ah and a 12v 7ah

new bigger hole to get batts in, also dad painted hull green, but its going to be grey :) so painting that soon

smoke :) im still huntin around for a jjc unit but for the time il be usein the hunter unit, i might even get another and run one per stack

the cool lights :) im really chuffed with how they turned out, im going to add a flashin red or white or both to the tower and i have a  solid red to use somewhere but i might get some more white ones for deck/working lights

also ordered a elec dual switcher :) so some time in the week that should turn up then touch wood should have super cool lights  ;D

plan atm is to seal the batts in ( which is really going to be a pain ) means carryin around 18 kg to the lake lol and its about 2/3s of a mile to the lake  :'(

the thing that is worryin me the most is the smoke unit, just that it gets hot, iv been told that maybe tin foil might do the trick at keepin heat away from things

done alittle more, WoW the spot lights were a total pain but got there in the end  >:D

i know the lights are around the wronge way  ;D

where the smoke unit will hopefully go :)

im lovin the grey deck :) so much better than the green that was on there

only first cote has gone on :) will do another one tomorrow then jobs a good un

so much more to come, i kinda wish i hadnt of addin the lead shot when first building the model as their would be more going in like sound unit and working chain/anchor

oks well this is what she looks like with most of the weight in her, stuff got other bits to go in, but the batts are in and what not

when shes done it will be over weight tut tut but hopefully moving the water line up abit might help

:) been planin the towing pole, two large poles with a smaller one going through, and going to solder it in place, hopefully it should be rather stronge so i can tow large things ( when its finished and at some point il be towin a rear boat with it )

if all gos well then with in 2 weeks it should, touch wood be finished  >:D

when shes done and finally finished il put a vid up of the model running :)

Oks oks  ;D this is how the smoke unit should look and work, im going to stick some brass pipe out the end to give it a better look :)

(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc127/offshore1987/th_smokeunit222222222.jpg) (http://s214.photobucket.com/albums/cc127/offshore1987/?action=view&current=smokeunit222222222.flv)

For some more pics :)

needs to be cute down of course  ;D

if you can guess what the thing is on the left/infront of the tug  you win a medal

oks back on the build :)

(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc127/offshore1987/th_smokeunitingardenforforum_0001.jpg) (http://s214.photobucket.com/albums/cc127/offshore1987/?action=view&current=smokeunitingardenforforum_0001.flv)

i did this today... but.... iv taken the fan back out, and i might take the smoke unit out all together as its really startin to annoyin me

after 2 hours i got the pipe work to line up grrr  >:D then the fan had probs gettin the air into the smoke unit

another vid   ;D

on a nice carm day it should work very well, touch wood

just wanted to see what it looked like out side so made a alittle vid at the same time :)

towin pole is in now, and electrics have just gota be sorted out then the paint will be done, iv hooked the fan up with the smoke unit so they turn on at the same, then im puttin a switch in ( which will be turned on by a servo ) so i can turn the smoke unit off to cool down for alittle while when runnin the boat

also re glue the windows in as more have just randomly feel out lol the once thats done move onto the bottom bit of the s/s :)

:) i did two pics to show how it looks with a dim red light, the only thing with the red light is you cant see it in sun light but you can see the white in the sun light

:)

Me switcher finally came ;D just been playin about with it so as always theres a vid  ;) ( il make a good vid when the boat is finished )

Im going to put the red LED up on the mast :)

Hey, Thats a really good paint job. Does your dad take sub contract work? Ive got a couple of boats that could do with his magic touch. Ok Joe cool so how come the Bluebird wheel just happens to be sitting in your dining room? Cheers Graham

Me dad dosnt really do painting as a job but hes a dab hand at it, hes painted alot of things in the past, not sure if he would paint any more models lol he said it was a pain  ::)

Its come out just right, the way we planed it was to not have it rubbed down then painted over and over so its not to shinie  :) its got more of a real look to it. Kinda come out well seems it was down in a cold workshop at out side temperature  :) it had 6 cotes of black in the end lol

Just have to go around the inside with a cotton bud and patch up some grey bits, then it should be ace  O0

The bluebird wheel was won by me dad  :) has to go back soon for the winner of the 2007 ( my dad is 2006 british offshore champion ) "class 3"

all the best, more to come soon

      It is looking good Mate...

Can i suggest that you make the mast hinged at the bottom so that it can fold back for transporting...This way it can fit under the Bootlid/cover  of most cars and is out of sight from prying eyes when unattended...

It is also a lot easier to carry this way...

...Best Regards...Norry...

Thanks banjo  O0

Norry thats some very good advice  ;) i was wonderin what todo about that, im not to sure how im going todo the mast yet i might do it abit diffrent from the plans, il either make it as you've said and fold it back or take it off all together  :)

Norry

Can't see how it's hinged or fixed upright from the photos.

For interest One of our club members uses a miniature jack plug which not only keeps the mast firmly vertical but neatly allows continuity for any lights fitted.

I thought it was a neat solution.

Cheers

Doug

Hi chaps, i was usein a BEC so not sure why it set fire it was under volted so it was safe ( i did this so it was so fast and seemed more real ) im guessin something went wronge with the BEC or the ESC, not to mater il leave the bow thruster as it is for now and wont use it :)

Norry  O0 thanks for the pm, iv looked on this forum at all the pics of your mast and it looks very cool indeed, never would of guessed it was mc d's spoons :) iv kinda started planin me mast before i came on, i was thinkin 2 coper pipes smaller one on top and bigger one in wheel house so i can thread all my lights into it and then down into the hull, then when needed pullin it up alittle and lettin it fold over onto something made on the wheel house so it sits nice, il have a bash at it soon and post some pics up :)

I really like your idear though Norry saves weight and saves the pennys :)

All the best :)

No, I did not tow with this tug anything jet, it is just balanced in the tub. There are installed ballast tanks, instead of 10 kilos of lead. It works great.I will go on the lake once it will be finished included superstructure and all details.

Those 900BB from Graupner are terribly expensive. There must be a good and cheaper alternative?

Similarly, the servos which Graupner offer for the Tito are very expensive. I know that a servo directly shifting a powerful Schotel Drive must stand up to a lot of vibration and be very powerful but again there must be a good alternative?

You are right, servos for Schottle drives are heavy duty servos, with metal gear and BB. I have there not so expensive Hitec 645 BB MG servos, working good. I did not used in my Tito any plywood, I do not like this material for ships, I make new deck and everything exposed to water by fiberglass, 0,8 mm thick. In the hull are installed two ballast tanks, instead  kilos of lead.I make them also from fiberglass. On the bottom of the hull are openings- inlet for water, on the top is vent pipe. Water is 2 cm below waterline, so they are full all time. I am happy with this system, water is everywhere for free, lead is always problem.

What size of Smit Mersey do you have? For so big motors? Alternate motors for Tito Neri and size as this are motors from car ventilators, or best one is from VW Touareg from powered seats. It is 12V MONSTER power BOSCH made motor

The other servos you could use in the tito that i have read are good for it is S3305 servos though they are just over £30 each, For my only test at the lake i used 3003 servos which worked but under fullpower and turning they sometimes wouldnt do it so had to back off then let them trun  O0

Im going to stick with the 3003s for now and then upgrade at some point later on

One of the best things i think that would be good for the tito imo would be metal props  ;)

S/S is painted now  O0 but iv run outa glue lol   :(

Deck is fiberglass, not plywood. It is waterproof, not so heavy and very hard. Covers for Schottels will be installed with silicone, not screws are used.

Hi

Took mine down the lake today first real test sinse its been semi finished, found some problems steerin servos are next to useless so they are going to be changed, and also after about 10 mins the speed controlers seemed to mess up,  just going along then one of them started going backwards and the other fowards   ???  was abit funny gettin it back as it just went around and around lol when pushin the stick faward  not sure how it did it as they are pluged in with a Y lead so hmm lol anyways once i got it back i turned everything off then back on and it had sorted its self out

also i need to hook the elecs up with a comp thingy to the s/s

Schottle drives with this 900 series motors are to powerfull for regular servos. You have to drop down voltage to 8 Volts or make set up on transmiter, throttle put to 75 %.  I am using there Hitec 645 MG BB servo, everything is working great. If you using 12 volts, servo is Unable hold this power

Hansen,
With regard to your ballast tanks.

Please tell me if you think there is any advantage, other than not having the boat "pre-weighted", to your water ballast?
Do you have these tanks "baffled" to combat any free surface effect or do you rely on them being "pressed up"

I should like to compare the water line on your Tito to mine..

Pic please.

Regards,

Congrats on building this great tug,

I think you are driving both your steering nozzels from one stick, I have the same tug and I use independant controls but even then I found with my first build the servos were not strong enough so I got some beefy ones from Westbourne's which did the trick.
You say that the ESC's went a bit hay-wire? I think you may find that the ASD's were being turned round by the prop wash / drag.
I watched this happen while in my swimming pool with Tito being driven.
Once I had changed my servos it all went fine. I run with two 12 volt LSA's driving main motors, stern winch, bow winch bow thrust and anchor winch, I also have one 6 volt LSA for the control of REC, lights servos and electronic switchers, three ESC's and the final bilge pump.

Yes you may find out that the ASD's will let some water into your hull ! Cost me an 9 channel REC  :embarrassed:
I have looked for the type and name of the servos' but sorry not located it yet and as you know there is a lot of work to remove them once the deck is down  :(     if I find it I'll post info.

How did the water ballast tanks work out in practice?
Title: Re: Tito neri build
Post by: offshore1987 on February 18, 2008, 06:11:39 pm
Catengineman, Thanks for the info  O0  I dont think it was the servos when it went abit funny, im kinda thinkin now that the left ESC reset its self, im using tornado ESC which are auto set ( i might have to change them maybe )

I dont think i got any water in the hull from the back, Just a alittle bit from the bowthruster, im running her on a salt water lake so maybe a bilge pump might be a good idear in mine to  ;D

Oh  {-) i did silicone the rear hatchs in  ::) as well as screws so i guys il probs have to cut the hatchs out ( yaaay lol ) I think im going to try the 24kg servos so touch wood i wont ever have to worry about them

Still got some bits to finish on her but from seein it on the lake im very pleased at how well she sits and dosnt bob up and down  :D

P.s dont take your boat apart to see what the servos are  O0 i know how much of a pain it is lol

Thanks again :)

How are water ballast tanks works? Very simple. On the pictures you can see, how they are looking just installed in the hull. You can see a lot of space for motors, Schottel drives and power batteries. On the bottom of the hull are holes, on the top is plastic pipe- air access. Top of the tank is 2cm below waterline, so tank is always full, you can make there also pick up for water monitors. It is not problem. once you will put ship on the water, in one minute or so, tanks are full.  once you are ready to go home, just pick up ship out of lake, water will run out of the hull by itself. There are no any pumps.Advantage is light ship, you saving money on lead, there is not transportation and manipulation with lead, what can be problem in BIG ship.My friend and me are working on large battleships, where is required a lot of ballast. But size as Tito Neri is OK for this system. On the pictures my friends hull of Braveheart with installed tanks

They are abit fast as well haha so i might have to try and slow them down or move the stick very slow

so far i think its money well spent but... not tryed it on the water yet

Hi Tug Kenny  :) lowin the voltage would lower the power of the servos  ;) ta for the help though :) Copyed whats below from what i put on another forum before i saw your reply

:) well got it out on the water today and WoW!! what a boat!!  :D

the new servos worked perfect   it really needed them and now it runs perfect under full power, i was running it at full power all over the lake and it didnt do anything other than go great

Bow wave WoW its perfect,  i loved going full power then turnin back into the wash lol and runnin her flat out back through it  :p

she even sits flat and dosnt bob up and down even with abit of a chop ( didnt think it would sit so well )

lights worked great so did the hunter smoke unit

oh and the speed controlers worked great too, i think before when usein the BEC and the 3003 servos they stalled maybe it pulled to much power then that reset the speed controler

i think i like lookin at it at home just as much as running her on the lake, i got alittle bored after 30 mins at the lake lol

all the best

P.s i didnt get any pics or a vid :(

and this is the pressy

and this is about the size, its 10 foot pool :)

I got it because i can never get down the lake and settin the weight up in the bath is just annoying so next best thing lol a little pool :) il have ago at settin it up tomorrow then try the tito in it :) il take some pics of course

Im having some problems with the digi switcher AGAIN grr i cant get the lights to work with it so im thinkin of ripin it out and... puttin the batt up in the s/s and having it independant of the rest of the boat so i can dissplay it nice and so on :)

As you may see i didnt clean in, it looks rather dirty with dust all over it  :p great little test pool though, im thinkin maybe i should of got a smaller one though, iv been playing with the U16 in it too little sub looks tiny lol £40 well spent though good little pool

just some pics, if you look on my photobucket theres all my tito pics and vids :)

oh and the rear hatchs aint in, if anyone was thinkin id painted them black  :) i think il put them in tomorrow and do some full speed turning and see how swoped it gets, just got to set it up alittle better then shes ready for real lake time, im not sure why but at very slow speeds on the speed controlers shuts off then slow going back the other one shuts off, im guessin it how iv wired them up or something, i dont notice it when on the rear lake as never go that slow, but i might have alittle poke around

Iv also taken the digi light switcher out and im going to wire in a swtich and put the batt up in the s/s so i can take it off easyer ( just makes sense ) might fit the batt in there over the weekend, then its just finishing the detail stuff and the mast ( anyone wanna build my mast lol )  :p

Hope you like anyways, cant wait to see some more of your stuff

Today i finally got it the lake, after doing some more bits to it and its now running on 2.4. Ok well the spektrum dx6i worked perfect!!!! shockinly well

Right was all good till the right schottle thing went wronge yet again, damn these things, but on another note im glad it did as when i brung it back to the side of the lake i took the s/s off to find salt water in her and rather alot lol, i think the ancor wells are lettin in water under full power   so gota sort that anyways, lucky it was just not high anoth to get onto the wood where the speed controler are and the batt for the reciver, but apart from that it went well, iv added more weight in her so its not sittin perfect but it done the job, im going to be fittin a bildge pump in her sometime now as well  :)

iv also put a reciver pack in the s/s so its totally independant from the hull, its a got a hunter power board up in there, which turns the lights on n off and will turn the radar on n off when i get that far as to fit it and the mast   :p  as you know im lazy and take for ever to do soemthing

hes a short little vid was to buzy playing to film lots, thats also my dads fishing boat 32 inchs long something like 14 wide looks rather bif next the small lookin tito  :o again his is on 2.4 same controler and it worked perfect too the range was blissfull one end to the other no probs

Why have you got your navigation lights on the opposite sides to the rest of the world?

Post by: offshore1987 on June 09, 2008, 06:39:03 pm
{-) oh yeah lol   really didnt notice that

Shes got a good speed, its hocked upto 2x 12v batts so a big 12v per motor, its going alittle bit slower than last time because of the weight up the front now, before i added that bit more weight up the front it lifted the bow up higher and went a tad faster, when i put the bildge pump in the back half it should help abit more

all good though redone the schottle now, i think the problem is the servo is to power full for the schottle now... cant really win on that front, at full power then turning the servo fast i think the gears or something in there slips ( in the schottle ) and it all moves to a diffrent position :o

little bit more work to seal the front anchor weels or one of them then its all go again, im going to strip the left schottle again because i have a feelin that its all got loose in there again  ??? I may just buy 2 new schottle and start again....

All the best and thanks for the comments

How did you go about designing them?
Did you calculate how much water they would hold?
It also looks like they were formed with wood is this correct?
