Title: "Live" UK shipping movements.
Post by: Faraday's Cage on February 02, 2008, 10:40:59 am
Found this site recently.
Zoom in on a particular area.
Loads of information and photos of the ships concerned (if available). This is mainly concentrated on the Irish Sea area but covers Manchester Ship Canal also.  Maximum refresh time is 2 minutes.
There's also a couple of webcams that appear to be working ok and refresh every 5 secs.

Ideal for anyone living on the coast.

What a cracking find! Really good for watching ship movements, etc. Would also let you get prior knowledge if you wanted to get photos, by showing what and where, at any given time. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

If you use the drop down list on the left of the screen, you can select areas around the whole of the uK. By clicking on any of the squares on screen when in this format, you can zoom in on any area.

Clicking on a ship can display a picture at the left of screen (may have to double click on ship!)

The English Channel is amazing!

Hello all, it really is an amazing site and when you get captivated with it a day can pass quite easily  O0  The only down side that I've found is the range is limited to 25Nm from the epicentre and where I live is just on the cusp of coverage. The point of this is does anyone know how easy it is to become involved as a centre for relaying the information through to the internet thus enabling more coverage. I'd really be interested in expanding the network to cover the Fair Isle channel and the East Shetland Basin.

There seems to be some info on this link but I've yet to study it thoroughly

Hamish,

If you scroll down the home page to the bottom there is a forum button and a message button which might lead you in the right direction. O0

Not sure if this has been mentioned before on Mayhem, but there is a similar live ship movements map for the Solent see http://www.ais-live.co.uk/aismap/

It is updated every minute or so. It's interesting to see just how many ships shelter in the Solent in foul weather. Clicking on the ships gives details of the ship etc.
