Hi all,
Thought you'd like to see my latest project she's the American Beauty by Dumas, on opening the box discovered most of the wood was cr*p so i decided to scrap it all and build her from plastic this is what she looks like so far i'm having a break at the moment and building four barges for her to push when she's finnished it should be around 10'-3" long

Nice looking vessel. I concur with your comments on Dumas wood as far as my experience goes. The Brooklyn kit had terrible wood that was only fit for patterns. The hull was great though. Is you hull fiberglass or vacuum formed?

I was very lucky to get one of the last fibreglass ones,even more lucky for me is that they have stopped making them now.

Well after a long time (a very long time) she's finally finished and go's like a dream and with a action mixer , what a mover.

That is so cool !!!! O0 and in the one head on pic it looks so real ,so I take it the barges are scratch built or are plans available ? 8)

They are scratch built from drawings supplied by towboatjoe if you go to my build blog on RCgroups you can see them ,the measurements are for a full size barge so you can scale them to what you need.

Its been a while, but I've acquired a Dumas fiberglass hull for the American Beauty. I'm going to be scratch building the superstructure on mine too. Do you have any photos of the prototype you could post.

Jenno, excellent work. You take some good photos as well.
I sent my hull to Karl for a future project.
I've got 28 photos of the AB. Several are bigger than the 161 kb allowed here.
Email me at towboat@windstream.net and i'll send them to you.
There are some small differences between the prototype and the model.
I think a stairwell is one from what a fellow modeler has told me.
I did a set of drawings of the AB for scratch builders.

Hi Jenno, I have only just found your thread on AB. I have had the kit by me since just before the Twin Towers attack in 2001. I also have the Dumas 2 x barge kit.
I was surprised how expensive the underwater fittings set was, so I made my own. Then started to work on the model and despaired of the wood quality, good idea doing it in plastic. Boat still not completed.
Have you any pictures of the inside of your model?
I checked with Tow boat Joe, what a helpful guy, how did you connect your sets of rudders TBJ offered several options?
What size motors did you opt for to be able to push those barges?

I didn't use the normal rudder setup i opted for steerable kort nozzles instead.I used 2x T12 motors from MMM plenty of power with belts and pulleys as the shafts were low in the hull. I scratched built the barges as i could'nt find the Dumas kits anywhere.

Hi Jenno, thanks for taking the trouble to put the pictures up. Very interesting. I like the barges as well.
I think you might have got me started again, well AB has moved up to 3rd. place anyway. Is the central servo micro switch setup for lights? I was thinking of a direct motor drive as I have a pair of Navy direct motors I am going to use. As I have made the underwater fittings already I am going for the 6 rudder solution!
By the way what size props did you use?

Hi roycv,
The props are 50mm from the prop shop and yes the servo etc are for the lights. Running lights are always on and one micro for search lights and the other one is for all the deck lights,as for the Action mixer i've removed it and now steer using dual control much better.
