Title: Good Model?
Post by: Colin Bishop on March 02, 2008, 11:08:05 am
Usually we like to try to get our models looking like real ships. Here's an instance where a real ship looks like a model!

Colin,
Another of my old ships.

It was!  :( I think they were worried that our ferry, Bretagne,  might do the Government's job for them in taking another frigate off the Navy List. Actually Bustler wasn't needed but I was struck by just how maneuverable she is, just dancing round our bow to get on the lee side as we exited the berth going astern. Got no sleep all night though, too busy hanging on the the bunk guardrail!

She should me manouverable as she is twin Voith Schneider Propulsion.
The MoD have a clause to supply the Duty Tug for shipping entering or leaving Portsmouth Harbour in adverse weather conditions!!

Its a good illustration of "how it is"...

I see dozens of proud exhibitors on this Forum demonstrating their lighting skills with the Bridge interior lit like an operating theatre!!

I'm having a real problem with that picture! Are my eyes failing, or is that the red navigation light on the starboard side? I first thought the negative might have been reversed inadvertantly. But if that was the case, shouldn't the name be backwards? Please tell me what I'm actually seeing here.....

It's not your eyes Jack!  The tug is powered by Voith Schneider units and can travel equally well in all directions. On this occasion it was accompanying us up the harbour going astern all the way. It is fitted with duplicated nav lights to show other vessels the direction it is actually travelling in.

Shipmate 60 knows a lot more about this than I do as he's actually served on the vessel.

My how things have changed since my days as a merchant sailor! That's something I would have never deduced. Makes good sense though. Thanks for enlightening me, sir.
