Just had a go at my first attempt to use an airbrush, paint has gone on and covered well. using air brush ready paint
I am painting a MTB hull and deck. the problem I seem to have is that I am left with a layer of paint dust when its dried out
which I can brush off but it does leave marks which may go when I cover with varnish, the paint is Matt finish.
Am I doing something wrong and could I wash it off before I apply the Matt varnish.

I am yet to use my airbrush and I am keen to find the answer to your question. However I would like to know what paint you have IE Enamel, Acrylic and what brand is it that comes ready for airbrushing, that could come in handy when I start to airbrush.

the paint I use is by Revell Enamel matt finish. in 25ml jars they screw staright onto the airbrush
one pot goes a long way .

I use this paint with my airbrush with no problem. How far from the painted surface are you holding your airbrush? 10-12 inches is recommended although I tend to get closer if I'm not careful. Have you tried adjusting the flow? What temperature are you spraying at? If you are getting powder maybe it's drying too fast.
Not a solution but I hope this helps.

Sounds like you are spraying from to far away Dave and some of the paint is drying before it hits your model. O0

Thanks guys sounds like I am to far away. I get could coverage so will try closer and adjust the flow
I will wash the hull down and see what she looks like when dry

Right then let the EXPERT tell you what is wrong I presume you are using a propellant can by the sounds of it.If you are stop and go and buy a compressor.
If using a compressor air press too HIGH I use 20psi
Paint viscosity incorrect
Wrong thinners
Gun help to far away
Gun moved too quickly
To High a Temperature

Many thanks for the pointers. I am using a compressor. paint is revell airbrush ready, temp should not be the cause as in the shed
no heat on , looks like gun held to far away had another go and it was much better just need the practice,
has Im doing the hull would I need a airbrush that has a wide spray as mine does not seem the adjust much or is this practice again
or to big an area for the air brush .

For larger areas I use a cheap Badger 250-4 with my compressor. It has 4oz paint jars so you're not forever stopping to fill the thing. I use a "posher" single-action airbrush (I think it's a Badger 100) for smaller work. The cheap one came from Squires and has an adjustable external mix which gives quite a broad and heavy spray if you get it right. Don't forget to strip it and dunk the little conical valve and spring in thinners as soon as you've finished spraying.
BTW I NEVER spray in a cold shed, especially if I'm using rattle-cans e.g. Halfords. Too low a temperature can cause crazing of the paint later on.
Works for me. Suit yourself.

Thanks FLJ. shed wasn't to cold had the heater on to take the chill out turned it off before spraying .
My compressor and air brush both come from Machine Mart. not to expensive. I think I will look into the Badger spray gun
as you suggest . as the hull is probably to big to cover with the airbrush certainly with my lack of skill .

one thing you should invest in is a in-line air filter, they are not a lot of money helps to keep the moisture out when spraying all these things all help to give a good finish. O0

17-21 has stated the most important thing!!! nothing ruins a nice
paint job worse then water droplets >>:-( . and those propelant cans
are the worse >:(

Thanks guys all noted . I had another go at spraying last night moved the airbrush closer and seems to have done the trick
the odd dust line but as its my first go I'm happy, still difficult to cover evenly so looking at a small spray gun on FLJ advice
