Title: Ponging paint

Well 'International Universal Primer Sealer - clear' actually. This is sanding sealer as far as I can make out. I found a tin of this which is a couple of years old and still half full. Luckily I opened it outside because it really pongs - like a rubber mouse that died.
I'm sure it didn't smell like this when new. It is water based so no solvent to mask the stench. Anyone used this? I wonder if it is some bacteria that was able to live in it becasue it is water basded?
Anyway the test piece is drying to see if it still works.

BTW while I couldn't find this tin I tried to buy "sanding sealer" in B&Q. Even a middle aged asistant had never heard of the stuff! so if you are looking 'primer sealer - clear' might be what to go for.

You would only find sanding sealer in a model shop - basically it's clear dope with talcum powder in to seal and fill the grain of balsa. Not something B & Q would deal in.

Specialist ironmongers (the traditional type) may stock it too as it's not just used in modelling applications. Also, those shops selling furniture based finishes such as button polish or french polish may have a shellac based version which gives a superb finish if you can get hold of it.

This stuff is a white milky fluid. It is as far as I can remember the same as the stuff I got from a model shop some thirty years ago. I can't rmember if I ever had a sanding sealer that was solvent based ( ok lets not be pedantic water is a solvent I know). I also don't recall a version containing solids though I have mixed powder into dope as a crack filler that, or a thick primer/filler is not what I would call sanding sealer. I think pongo might go to the tin recycler while I detour past the fly-boys supply shop.

Just checked, my old Axminster and old John Body's catalogues list it in several varieties and more than one mfr  eg Rustins. Axminster now list an acrylic variety which might be worth a try except it costs a fortune. http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Chestnut-Acrylic-Sanding-Sealer-19767.htm

Try screwfix , just got two bottles of sanding sealer from them. Haven't tried it yet so dont know how good it is .
