Title: Recommendations?
Post by: Eddy Matthews on July 16, 2006, 12:50:14 pm
I'm looking for a scale sailing boat for my next build, pilot cutter, cornish shrimper, thames barge... That sort of thing, with a maximum length of 50".

But I need something that will handle a reasonable breeze, and in particular gusty conditions as our lake is prone to winds that swirl around....

Can anyone recommend which type of scale sailing craft would be most suitable?

regards
Eddy

Eddy

Have you thought about a Scottish 'Fifie'? Here's a good link - with plans!

Thanks Andrew, nice link....

Anyone else got any suggestions? Surely there must be some scale sailors on this site that can give advice on a suitable model, or am I in a minority of one?

Eddy

Hi Eddy If you check out this section you will find 2 boats that I could comment  on , a Thames barge and a French Bautier( very similiar to a Bristol pilot cutter). I love both but for different reasons. The barge will sail in light air the Bautier requires a strong blow to get it up and moving. If you need more info. let me Know.

Thanks Mark,

Your models look gorgeous!

Would you beleive it never even crossed my mind to look through the messages in this section of the forum - I assumed (wrongly!) that there was nothing that would help based purely on the titles of the messages - How daft can you get? if brains were dynamite I wouldn't have enough to blow the skin off a rice pudding!

Having said that, I've now managed to find a couple of decent websites with some interesting craft, and a phonecall to Mike Mayhew at Waverley Models has yeilded a huge amount of info!

I have no experience of Thames Barges, but I'm surprised to hear that yours likes light airs.... Is that normal for a Thames Barge, or your model in particular?

Regards
Eddy

Hi Eddy
The Barge has a drop keel 9lbs and withn the mizen mast it responds very well. I have a number of good references which I think you could find of use drop me aPM if you are interested.

HI Mark
I tried to PM you but no response.
I am interested in the Thames sailing barge as a model.

Sorry I did not receive the PM. The model it's built to a scale of 1/24 on a Tony Williams Hull the rest is scratch built ,it was a real labour of love including the sails.

How about a grand banks schooner? I built the one in the pic bread and butter style. Its sails well and can stand a good breeze without the topsails.
