Title: 1/96 scale USS-Barnes and the USS-Kidd.
Post by: type1x on March 24, 2008, 01:42:05 pm
I have just been to collect the USS-Barnes and the USS-Kidd that I managed to do a deal on with the seller. These two ships have been advertised on this forum recently but had no takers on them possibly due to their quite high price tags but if you were to see these two ships and realise the amount of hours and detailing that has gone into each one then you would soon see that the prices were very cheap for what they are.

These are both modified Deans Marines kits and the attention to the detailing is just fantastic.  O0  Both of these ships have been built to such a standard that I am sure if they were to be displayed at a show then they would definately be medal winners (they have both already been to Nurberg in Germany this year for promoting the Deans marines model kits). I must admit though that I am not into displaying models myself as I get more pleasure out of sailing them which is not as often as I would like these days. :(

The Barnes is a very large Escort carrier measuring a whopping 63" and weighs in at quite a bit also. Individual planking makes up the flight deck and the radar masts have been made from brass which must have taken ages to make, you can't even see the soldering joins they are that good. With her planes preparing to get ready for take off I can't wait to get her into the water and out on her first patrol.  ;D

The Kidd has had even more detailing done to her and is so scalelike that you would think that you are looking at an exact miniature of the real ship. Again I can't wait to get her into the water also.  ;D

The only problem I have now is my wife, She says that I have far too many models, as if you possibly could. Looks like another bunch of flowers is due.  {-)

To save me posting the pics on here, take a look in the "for sale" section of this forum and scroll down to  "1/96 scale escort carrier".

There are quite a few pics on that thread of the USS-Barnes and there are links to the USS-Kidd as well.

Let me know what you think.  O0

That is some amazing detail on the carrier - congratulations on your new purchase.  I would have to buy my wife a lot more than just flowers if I brought something like that home!  >>:-(

I do have to ask... does that C-47 on the stern have arresting gear?  ;D

Hi Chuck,

Yes of course the C-47 has arresting gear.  :)

I was going to buy my wife some flowers today as a peace offering but when I opened my wallet I found that I had hardly any money left after my purchase of the two new ships. :embarrassed::  (so I bought her a packet of flower seeds instead.)  {-)

I am a very thoughtfull person you know and was thinking of all of the fun and pleasure she would have by watching them grow in the seed tray.  O0

I just hope that she feels the same way when I give them to her.  ::) ::)

Chuck and Steve

You might like to see this:

She also became an amphibian with very large floats and retractable wheels, she was the first to land at both the North and the South Poles with skis attached and has done a JATO (Jet Assisted Takeoff) from an aircraft carrier with JATO pods on her belly.

So maybe no arrestor gear but certainly on the deck at some time!  O0

As the railway modellers say 'there is a prototype for everything'

Cheers

Very interesting Doug.  O0

It is surprising what you can learn on this site.

Apparently a C-47 was actually on the flight deck of an escort carrier at some point in the war, as the person who built the model of the USS-Barnes, had a picture of one on the flight deck. Amazing as this may sound it actually happened.  :o

Here is a picture of my other new warship the USS-Kidd.
