Just remembered, when i was on the old cable vessel St Margaret's, when in hot weather underway, to increase ventilation to the lower deck we used to rig a canvas
cloth/ Old hatch cloth with odd timber to make temporary funnel vent to force air below when underway.

Everything is ready for the first trial run after prudent check since I never want her to go to Davy Jones's locker at initial run.!!   I have been waiting a proper weather for the run so far in vain together with my boat hoping the day to come currently as early as possible. I earnestly do hope she will be a good scale runner on our boating lake.

I am getting back into model boating after a long layoff.  It was part of my life from a young age, something I did with my father. 


Cold Sunday mornings with a diesel powered RAF crash tender with no RC.  Had to run like heck and try and catch it! 😂…


Dad got his first RC  in the early 70’s. And by then when was moving from wood to GRP hulled boats.  My first build was at the age of 11, a Vic Smeed ‘Searider’ from the Model a works TV show. 


Then a 1/12 scale Lochin 33 with an OS Max engine with dads assistance.   My first solo was   I then
 a Sun XX1 Alexander Towarage[/size][size=78%] tug, followed by a 1/72 Flower Class conversion. [/size]

[/size][size=78%]This led to a MAP (I think)[/size][/size][size=78%] Type IX u boot I rescaled to 1/72.  This was a dynamic diver…. [/size]

[/size][size=78%] I experimented with Steam for a bit trying to fit it into a GRP hull of a corvette[/size][/size][size=78%] but a Darnell S Class as a gift from Dad sent pms further down the path of submarines.  After pushing the Darnell to its limits and 3 refits with  newer tech I stated o  a 1/48 Type VIiC. She was to have had all the bells and whistles,…[/size]

Unfortunately a break and my fathers passing led to me moving away from the hobby…

I recently took a trip down memory lane and rebuilt a Sea Rider… or rather Searider 50.  I corrected some dimensional choices made by Vic and upgraded to twin screw/rudder with RC while trying to stay with he simple build intent..


I’m nearly finished  a Glynn Guest Type 21 in the same vein and have drawn up and have started work on a Type 82. Using Vic/Glyn methodologies. [/size][size=78%]  These 3 are all 1/144 for transport convenience.  [/size]

During the upgrade of the Searider I bought in some 3D printed parts…. Wish we’d had this 40 years ago….  Anyhow,  the cost is not cheap using commercial resources which led to my entering the 3D printing circle.


I’ve tinkered with CAD (no pun intended) over the years which is how I was able to produce a set of revised plans for the Searider and to draw up the 82 from builders plans into a construction drawing and whic has led to a so far easy transition into printing parts….

So lots has changed in my 25 year time out, I’ve old skill and a lot of new tricks I need to learn, [/size][size=78%] so I hope to call on your knowledge and experience as I venture back into this great hobby.[/size]

Yes, as a young lad building the Titan I managed to ger the spindle shaped blocks the wrong way round.... The model never quite looked right after that.

If you want a simple traditional steam tug build, the Vic Smeed's Bustler cannot be bettered. Everything on  the plan.

Hi with the low value of kit made model boats built and ready to sail, I think that old kits have more value left untouched especially the box.

Sad but that is my experience as I help dispose of deceased club members models.  There are few buyers and not that many who know how to look after them.

Quite right. I try to encourage people to scan the plans, instructions and items like printed balsa, then make up a boat from the copies and make the data available on the web for historical value, and others. Though admittedly this is hard for a kit with a fibreglass hull, or, like the Titan, large pre-shaped blocks...
