Weed Runner
« on: March 02, 2022, 07:17:01 am »

Hi All

I was buying a tug for a fellow club member, but, I also bought a Fiberglass Airboat (725mm x 280mm)with a IC OS 25FP !!!

As it turns out one of our club members has one with a 28mm brushless motor on it.

So after a big clean up of this very dirty oily boat, it's starting to look OK !!

So dipping into the parts bin, a 3542-1250kv motor, 50Amp ESC(hope it handle the motor) and a 3 blade 9 x 4 air stirrer !!!

The boat had one servo, but no radio cover hatch.

It will be interesting thing to drive, more or less !!!

That could be god fun when you get it going Harry  :-))

I built my first airboat when I was still at school  - it was powered by a Cox 049 BabeBee.

Finished up the hatches, but the rudder servo will not fit!!!
Ordered a smaller 1.2KG one and hope it has the beans to turn the rudder ???

If not, you have room for a bit of 'rudder balancing' under the nacelle...   :-)

That looks good Harry,

I have been trying (not too hard) to find some plans for an air boat over the last 20 years or so but never found anything, but a fibreglass hull type like yours looks like it could be a good idea.

My last home designed ones were mainly built from balsa wood with only the motor mounts being hardwood and ply to support the Cox 049 BabeBee.

Have been a few in Model boats magazine as well as 1 in the MMMI mag, may not be quite what you are after but sure it could be adapted.

If I happen to stumble across something I am sure I will be tempted - but I do have a lot of other projects that I am working on at the moment - so hopefully a little restraint will be applied if one should turn-up up too quickly.  %)

Hi All
Whilst setting up the rudder servo, I fired up the motor on a 3S Lipo.

It looks like it's got some pull with the 9" 3 blade prop!!!

It's very tight to get the ESC, receiver and servo all in.

The hull is only having the battery, but may add a power on/off switch because the plane ESC does not have one.

Hi All
Hook up the rudder servo to the rudder today and it moves on dry grass!!!

So I decided to clean it up a bit and re stripe the old orange with a wider red one.

This will cover up this mess.

Next is a new outer rubber strip.

It's going to be interesting semi driving the best !!!!

Hi All

Installed a rubber C section around the outer edge of the hull.

The test day was a bit of a disaster, the cowling behind the motor came off.
This is wot the rudder servo fixed to i, so the drive of shame to the other side of the canal !!!
Taped it down and had a second run which showed the motor angle is wrong.
Turning was better than I expected and the large edge with the rubber strip kept the boat dry.
The boat runs over the weed sections, no problem.

So back to the work bench for a few changes.

Hi, I have an electric airboat that is fast but it skids sideways rther than wanting to turn.  I put it down to having a flat bottom, is that right?
Your one looks really good on the turns.

Well done Harry, it seems to go quite well doesn't it.

A good conversion I would say.

Hi All

Drop a blade off the prop, so it has a 2 blade on it now.

A test run on 4S Lipo gets it up and going, but it turns better one way.

Planning on a little larger balance rudder with more throw one way because of prop torque.

I did use it to get my come and try boat out of the weed.

A bit of a battle with tide and wind, also the steering at low speed .

Hi many years ago with a fastish model boat (it was a Bobby and I had made 2 of them) when my son and I used to sail in flowing water, my boat speeded up.  It had a 30mm 2 bladed prop with a 540 driving it on 7.2 volts and it planed nicely.

Got the boat in and found that one blade had sheared off!  The props were plastic and quite light in weight so the balance was not that adversely affected.
