Just when she needed my support
« on: January 04, 2016, 09:40:10 pm »

Hi all i feel like a useless idiot, my missus mum died new years day. Today taking the Dec's down at work I've torn my calf muscle (I was only stepping down from a set of ladders) now I can barely walk and we may have to drive upto Scotland in the next few days for the funeral, as if she hasn't got enough worries, I hate myself, my poor missus.

She does but in her state I wouldn't let her, my daughter in law is a physio, that how I know what I've done (there's a small muscle behind the main calf muscle)(can't remember what it's called the sillic or something ) she said to go to A and E as I could get compartmental syndrome or something ( not telling the missus that) will go to the drs tomorrow )

Apparently I've partially torn the gastrocnemius muscle, lucky as if I had torn it completely would be a hospital job, have to see a physio (lucky my daughter in law is one) so not as bad as first thought (supposed to rest it but my boss wouldn't like that)(what with wanting time off for a funeral too)

Stepping down backwards, it could be the Achilles tendon where it attaches to the calf muscle. Very painful, I've done it twice, once in 2013 and again last summer when I did both legs (don't ask!) You find you can't walk by putting you foot down, you can just about manage tiny painful steps if you have your leg bent at the knee and stand on toes alone.

It gradually wears off after 3 to 6 weeks  but the first week is the worst. The main thing is to keep it moving and applying ice packs a couple times of day for 15 minute sessions (frozen peas in a thin cloth work well) But excersize is the key along with some NSAIDS (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) like Ibuprofen or even plain old paracetamol for pain control.

Yep, just got your reply. Exactly as I describe. Its the head of the Achilles tendon where it attaches to the muscle, the partial tear is across this join. If it had been a full tear, then surgery would have been needed to reattach it, either that or no control over your foot the rest of your life.

Sorry to hear your problems. Maybe you could take the train or coach? That way you can move around a bit and your wife can relax. Maybe a relative could pick you up from the station? Just an idea ... and I work for Network Rail (providing you with a very smooth ride). Let the train take the strain  O0

I appreciate the boss doesn't want to lose you for any longer than needed, but as you did not cause your Mother in laws passing, or go out of your way to self inflict your injury, I think he is being a bit inconsiderate.

Tell me its none of my business, but I hate it when people are chastised for things they have little or no control over. We might as well blame each other for getting colds or making it rain.

I reckon you do great and will be of great support in the coming days/weeks Ken however you get up north. You are in my thoughts.

Thanks mate, it's a she, and concern for others is very low on her priorities (I've never met a more self obsessed person) she still lives in the victorians era, we are subservient scum and should know our places. We

Hi Kpnuts

As unlikely as you might think it you never know who (or what) reads these things and what gets back. My employer has a strict social media policy and any such mentions are picked up somehow. I don't like it at all but this is the way of business nowadays. I'll retire in a couple of years and I can't wait to be time rich and free.

Please don't think I'm trying to tell you what to say ... But Orwell's Miniluv sees Mayhem too  :police:

Hmmm, we all do have a right to hold our own opinions  despite paranoia about who might read/hear those opinions providing that they have some substance  which in this instance may well be the case, because it is an incredibly short-sighted employer who does not understand the direct relationship between a happy employee and company productivity.
The nightmare of Big Brother only becomes reality if everyone tugs their forelock and company is always allowed to come before compassion.
Kp and his wife deserve his bosses support.....and if not, does the boss ever deserve his, other than to merely do the basic job and never any extra commitment if needed?

I hate myself, my poor missus.

Please don't beat yourself up about it KP, as I am sure that even in such sad times as your good lady is going through, she will understand and feel for you in this dilemma.
Accidents do happen and I am sure that you will be able to support her in other ways, and hopefully you will be able to come to other arrangements regarding getting up to Scotland.
Take care, rest up and hopefully you will be able to make the journey in your car together.

Jim.
