Sail control using loop system
« on: August 22, 2025, 05:31:34 pm »

Hi every one
I have a loop system in my yacht,it works well, but using both sides of the loop allows me to bring the sails in and in reverse allows the sails to move out, obvious problem is the main works perfect, the fore sail goes too far, I have tried adding several pully’s to reduce the extent of the fore sail, but I have little room to add anything
The servo movement Is 16” I need to reduce this by half at least or less for the fore sail, any thoughts please

You can easily halve the travel of the jib by using a double purchase approach.

Presumably at the moment the jib sheet goes through an eye on the deck and then clips to an eye on the jib.  Instead, take the sheet though the eye on the deck, through the eye on the jib and then back to clip on the eye on the deck.

I will try and get a photo of the arrangement on one of our yachts and post it tomorrow.

Similar method to Gareth's
Connect loop back to a fixed point under deck and attach foresail to the new connection with a sliding ring

Hi Abandon
Set your system on a bench mock-up, it works well as long as the fixed point is central to the loop run, the loop has a 16” run if I place the fixed point any where nearer to the pully (C) the link (A) still has to travel 16”, the ring then becomes inaffective, I have some photos of my yacht layout, it does show how much I am restricted, the centre section is from the deck to the keel, so I have been limited to producing the loop system to run between the centre section and the side of the yacht, I can’t make it work !!
Sorry Geoff
Look forward to trying your system Gareth

Hi Geoff, it only existed in my head when I posted so I made a rough mock-up to try it this afternoon.
I may have missed something but with the fixed point directly below the left pully centre it seems to work in the space you have. The attachment point on the main loop moves 16", the ring to the foresail moves 8".

Hi Gareth
Abandon’s method works well on the bench mock-up, but when applied to inside the yacht it appears to foul on the bulkheads, it fouls on something so well it pulled the servo out of the floor, it stretched a plastic ring to pieces, it fails to lift and replace a weight used as a substitute sail
Can you explain your method with a diagram or photo, I would like to give your method a try
Regards Geoff

Sorry mate, didn't mean to cause any problems. When I saw your 2 pulley system it just sort of popped into my head.
I mostly run power boats, only 2 sail boats one with a winch and one with a long servo arm.

Hope Gareth's method goes well.

Dave.

good morning Dave
good of you to reply, as I said works well on a bench set up, still trying to find the problem using various rings to replace the plastic ring, have even tried a loop instead of a ring, I won't be beat, on my schooner I changed the system to a winch with an arm
regards Geoff
