Vosper Motor Torpedo Boat
« on: April 11, 2008, 09:34:19 pm »

Today I start the George Turner Vosper Motor Torpedo Boat that I have had on the shelf since Christmas.
In the box is the high impact styrene hull and deck, bags of resin parts and the Graupner motor, propshaft coupling and motor mount.
The resin parts are extremely good quality.

The first thing is to trim the hull, this is done with a pair of scissors.
The next thing is to solder the wires and suppressors to the motor.
Holes drilled for the prop shaft, rudder and water cooling tube.
Assemble the motor, motor mount ,prop shaft, rudder and water inlet and epoxy resin them in place

The next thing is to complete the elctrics.
First the battery box is glued in place.
The small steering servo is fixed to the rear of this and connected to the rudder.
Place the 7.2V battery pack in place and mount ESC over the top of battery.
The mini Rx is mounted to one side at the rear of the motor on a shelf.
The silicone water inlet tube is connected.
Test the electrics. Surprise they work. Remove the battery.
Next job is to glue on the deck. This is supposed to be difficult but I had no problems. The deck was glued on using plastic weld and bulldog clips.
This is then left overnight to harden off.

The next job is to cut the openings in the deck being careful not to lacerate the innards.
A diluted mix of epoxy resin was the run round the inside of the hull at the deck join.
Once this was set the edge of the deck was given a final trim and sand up.
I was told I would need to fill the joint at the torpedo flute but didnt need to.
Then pieces of timber have to be glued under the deck to brace it, this was a bit tricky but it worked.

First thing today I put it on the water and boy does it sit low at the stern.
So I have moved the ESC to the front by the motor but there is little else I can do as I am using everything as recommended.
Spent the morning washing off and drying all the resin parts and there are a lot of these.
Cut and fitted hatches. Have yet to try and make them water proof.
Finished off the water cooling exit pipe.
Fitted the port holes.
Did notice that I had a bit of water inside the boat after putting her in the water. Bit of a mystery, prop shaft is greased and the rudder tube is greased.
Flipping boat is so small and with so much in it it is a job to see where the problem is. Will have another look later.
I am still waiting for a drawing from George and a couple of parts that were missing so I dont want to go to far yet.

Well had another good day in the shed.
Now George has sent me the drawing that was missing I have been going great guns.
On with sticking the resin parts in place and doing a bit of painting.
Might have to get in touch with our ACTion man about a new speed controller to replace my slightly too large one, which I will use in the next boat.

You better make it quick Robert, George Turner is stopping doing boats and is going over to slot cars. Shame really as this is a nice kit and the resin castings are really very good.

Down to the detailing now. SWIMBO says I have to wait till her next payday for my new ESC , bummer !! Muttered something about her pay packets not keeping up with my model making..
Anyway finished painting the bulk, if bulk is the right work for something this size, and it is really quite impressive. As I said the resin castings are excellent and very detailed.
Took off the last photos as they were rubbish so heres some more.

Hi Dicky
That looks very nice, a crying shame they are coming off the market. Here is a shot of the real No 57, hardly tell the difference;

Thanks Christian, could have done with the photo somewhat earlier as the drawings weren't to clear, should have known you would have one.
I suppose you noticed the deliberate mistake, which I might add was not mine, but was shown on the drawing as I did it.Bummer !! >>:-(

Thanks for the comments guys.
Would have liked to have done bigger Rob but 1. I dont have much room left and 2. I cant handle all the fumes from the epoxy, glue and paint so good these days.

I hadn't noticed anything - so I scored the photo and your pics and the only thing I came up with is the vents facing the wrong way !

It wouldn't bother me personally - until someone else mentioned it !  {-)

Quiet night at work - got nothing else to do at the mo !

regards,

Andi

Got it in one. But you see, now I know its wrong, I'm going to have to fix it.
Well it will give me something to do while the mere mortals are at work. >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-(
