Hi Stavros
Mugging the local motorway police sound like good fun on a Sunday. However!
If you take yourself down to Millets they sell GPS units for around £90.00 They are real easy to set up and use and are made by Garmin. They track your course and max speed during the run in your boat. I am not sure what type of boat you run but if it is IC then put the GPS in a plastic bag to keep the oil out.

£90 !!! Thats £40 more than the boat cost  :D anyway - after seeing todays performance it would have to be a VERY waterproof GPS.  ::)

The 'old fashioned' way was two buoys a set distance apart (usually set very inaccurately by someone walking along the bank and signalling to the guys in the boat, where to drop it). Then, as the model boat goes past the first buoy, a bloke level with the start drops his hand and the chap level with the finish buoy starts a stopwatch. When the boat passes the finish buoy, he stops the watch.
Then using mumbo jumbo and jiggery pokery, someone works out the speed.
Easy innit.
