What your favourite 540 / 600 Motor?
« on: April 22, 2008, 06:53:39 pm »

Hi All
I have a 58" 1/12th narrow boat shell that I intend to finish off,
Can anyone tell me what is a suitable motor and prop to use bearing in mind scale speed,
Can I use a 540 with a 1-6 reduction on 6 volt or would there be not enough
 power in it ?.

Thanks
Barry

I got some great Crouzet medical motors, (about £70 each!) but they are 12 pole and won't work with modern high frequency speed controllers.  :-\

I also like an MFA motor that 540 size but very slow revving, "RE - 540/1 - (3 POLE)" but I'm not sure...... >:(

I personally don't like geared motors, a direct drive is always quieter and more efficient and it's just a motor of finding the motor with the right voltage, size, windings and construction that suits your requirements.

So what's your favorite 540 / 550 / Speed 600 motor for Scale Boats?

(Make - Model - Supplier please.)

Personally I enjoy taking a bog standard 540s, ripping the windings off and winding it to suit what I need, its not rocket science either, you will know precisely what to do when you strip of the old wire.

For scale boats, try 0.35-0.37mm wire and 80 turns per pole, should give about 4000 at 6v drawing about 1amp stalled, scale speed and a bit for emergencies! O0

Hi Casper,
I've never had the guts or skill to rewind a motor, do you fancy doing a pictorial 'rebuild' here
on Mayhem to show us?

It still depends on the "scale" size prop.

I'm a noob, so this may not be relevant to your boat. I had really good luck with this motor.

1. 20" long 5lb DICKIE tugboat, travels at from zero to 10 mph for 5hrs+ on one 7.2Volt 2A nimh battery.
The prop is the stock boat prop, direct drive. Even though your boat is almost 60" long, this motor, or two of them, might be good for you.

2. Vac-U-Tow Towboat motor, direct drive

3. Aquacraft 15A ESC, one 2A NiMh battery.

again i apologize if this is not relevant to your boat,

all the best,

Additional info (Admin):

Vac-U-Boat's 545 type DC motor for direct-drive installation in scale boats.

TW103 (bare motor) and TW104 (motor with leads and caps installed).

This is a new DC 545 type motor manufactured by Johnson Motor Company for Vac-U-Boat. This is the standard Vac-U-Tow Towboat motor. 0.125" diameter x 0.53" long smooth shaft. 1.4" diameter x 2.85" long overall. No load speed of 3,100 RPM at 7.45 volts. No load amp draw of 0.22 amps at 7.45 volts. At stall, 2.54 amps at 7.45 volts.  Designed for 13.8 volt automotive use, it can handle 6-volt and 12-volt gel cells.
Epoxy-computer-balanced 5-pole armature has 75 turns of 0.27mm copper wire. Higher low-speed torque and lower RPM than 3-pole stock motors. Large bronze oil impregnated bushings. Carbon brushes. One internal capacitor on the negative terminal. This motor can direct-drive a 1.75" scale prop with cool-quiet performance.
