Hi Richard

On work machines as far as freeware goes (PC) we use Spyware Blaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
and Spybot http://www.spybot.info/sv/index.html

Seem to keep everything neat and tidy  O0

I use AVG & Zone alarm.

Lots of pop up at first but it soon settles down.
I now have a hardware firewall in the router but Zone alarm also tells me when programs on my PC
is trying to talk to the internet on the quiet... you'd be surprised how many do!  :o

(I used to use Norton & McAfee but had problems... at least AVG & Zonealarm are free!)

I'm using the free verson of adaware. It was totally reissued a month or so back, new GUI et al. Seems to work OK.

Adaware is a strange piece of software becaue if you install it on you PC and the uninstall it, try another spyware piece of software and you will see that adaware has left a lot of files on you PC, all spyware.

I am with Martin AVG 8 plus Zone Alarm Pro, I pay for both of them but the cost is a lot less than a new machine if something gets through. Since using these two together no problems.

No Matter what you use - YOU MUST DO REGULAR SCANS - at least one FULL scan one a week.

I'll second that.

Tried Norton Security and it took years to start up.  Loads of viruses were still present when I did a free check-up.  Now on AVG two years subs.for £60 and so far so good.

Adware and a lot of US sites carry viruses so Martin's advice is about right.  You can always set your software to scan regularly automatically...... O0 O0

AVG Free and Webroot (£30 for 2 years). Webroot has sets of 'shields' like mini-firewalls, though I also have the option to install a second Webroot firewall in my subscription. The router has one anyway so I haven't bothered. Webroot are now offering me AV as well for an additional £5 for two years, but AVG seems to do just fine. No viruses or trojans have made it on to the system since I've had this set-up - over two years now - but have had the occasional warning and quarantined the item in question.

Sweeps are done once a week, with emails and downloads automatically scanned.
