Motors in Tandem
« on: April 26, 2008, 02:52:13 pm »

 :)

Has anyone experience of running motors in tandem?

I have a mind to couple my two 6V Decaperms, in tandem, and run them on 12V driving one shaft.  The hope being that it will increase the torque without increasing the revs.

hi banjo i think you will have to parallel them up and keep to 6v to increase toque but not rpm have seen it done on a large tug running a 5" prop boy was that powerful

I don't think the gearbox of the right Decaperm will be very happy  ???
This gearbox is designed for the power of one Decaperm, and in this arrangement it has to cope with the torque of two motors.
A better option is to buy a Hectoperm, more torque and almost the same revs.
And only half the Amps of two decaperms

I wonder if a better solution (if you are sure you want to use both motors) is to mount them both with pulleys and belts so that they drive the shaft, giving torque as you are seeking. Otherwise I doubt that they run at exactly the same speed and any solid link would cause problems. Using belts as a way of transmitting the driving force would allow for a little slippage if one motor outstripped the other.

Belts would also allow change of ratios if required.
Have you done a load test in the current configuration? I'd be interested to know the current consupsion.
Also any particular reason for this configuration, space restrictions, experimenting,... just happen to have two Decaperms?

Martin  & all....
,... just happen to have two Decaperms?

If I have a choice of things to do, these days I choose that which will allow me to be home ready for bed by 9pm... So in the spirit of adventure....I just happen to have 2 decaperms sitting about. I am sure it must have been done.  I can just squeeze them into the drive line on my Springer & hope to disguise the forward one as something else!!!

Not now, they wont {-)
Wiring two motors in series is never a good idea, as there are always manufacturing tolerances resulting in a winner and a loser.  One winds up doing more work, the "lazy" one acts as a brake to the "winner", and the condition accentuates itself.
Not sure about connecting mechanically by belt - if slippage became involved that would involve wear on the belt and a short service life.  The solid coupling giveing effectively two armatures on a common shaft is probably the least worst option, but whether the gear box would live through it is another story.

I have seen several Deccaperm gearboxes recently where the motor pinion has broken.
This pinion is only a nylon gear, a push fit, on the motot shaft. The motor shaft does have a flat machined on it to transmit the drive.
But when this becomes a loser fit the nylon gear cracks.

You can not drive a gearbox from its output shaft, there is every chance of burning out the motor on the left.
