Bespoke Decals & Lettering
« on: May 08, 2008, 03:08:47 pm »

 :)

I have browsed the Traders Directory and seen the products on offer there; has anyone a recommendation for some easily applied lettering for ships name, life rings, draught markings, POR etc etc?

Have a word with Westbourne Models. They got some done for me a while back. Not cheap and took a couple of weeks to come through but exactly what I wanted.

All mine now have names and POR's printed out from Microsoft Publisher, onto glossy photo paper, trimmed and 'edged' (going over the white edges with a black permanent marker.) Glued in place and either clear coated immediately or left until the first run is over. My yellow lettering on black background then gets a bit of red - just like rust - then coated.

Not as good as bespoke lettering but once out on the pond, no-one can tell.

Try searching on 'BECC decals' and you'll find several suppliers of their products. They make really good vinyl lettering.

Testors makes a do it yourself decal kit. You get the software, light and dark paper, and the overcoat for less than $10 USD. The software is pretty much bunk, but as for the paper, you can use any print software, and presto...you have just the size you need, and any color you want! Be sure to print on normal paper first to verify that the sizes you want are accurate, then redo on the decal paper.

I have some "Ink jet adhesive transparent film" called "Lumocolor" made by Staedtler serial # 639 FTA-10F. However, I bought it in France, 10 x A4 sheets for 16.60€. I have not yet used it. This particular variety may not be available in the UK. However, I am confident other makers will have their own version available, "Avery" for example. I would try a good quality office supplies shop and see what you can find.

You may or may not like it, but if you look at my latest pics of Havelock you will see scale draught marks (and load lines). BECC do these in all (?) normal scales. Black on White or White on Black. Imperial and Metric. OK, not "cheap", but affordable. My only very slight quibble is that they are a tad too shiny. You CAN make your own but why bother when a good product is already there? I have made my own in the past, but BECCs is superior....as are their flags.

I have all my lettering done at the signwriters that does our fleet of vans, type in what you want, what size and color and it prints it off partly cut.

I have used Decal Paper on several models: uses ink-jet printers and when over-painted with acrilic varnish, the white becomes clear.

This worked great for me on a white hull - Smaragd renamed as Phoenix (see picture for transom and bows ) but see also link here for coloured work-arounds:

Got to agree with Bryan again, I use the BECCs lettering and flags and I also changed my kit supplied ones for BECCs, they are excellent.

The decal paper comes in 2 types (inkjet/laserjet) and two colours (cliear and white)

Ready the craftypaper project using it, on their website.

The inkjet paper needs to be sealed after printing, with acrylic spray. This is before you can dunk it in water to slide off.
Laserjet paper does not need sealing.

I used crafty, but the cost of postage for all orders is the same, be it a pice of paper or something heavy. So beware if you buy from overseas, it adds up.

Of course, there is always the 'old' way of doing it...

Letraset from your local draughting shop (Do they still exist?)  ???

Thank you for all the suggestions. I do use BECC products, but occasionally I have a need for a non-standard product, and it would be handy to be able to produce my own.

I assume you mean Letraset (other rub down characters are available)(or not)

I have found it difficult to find rub down lettering. The usual response is that people use their computers now. But if you hunt hard enough it can be found, but usually in restricted fonts.

The BECC stuff is far superior to Letraset, as the price reflects!
