1:1 full size build
« on: May 03, 2008, 09:19:05 pm »

Hi,

I cant help but wonder how many of you lot have built a full size boat of some kind?

I am nearing completion of a sailing dinghy, so here are some pics of the build.

Many, many (too many) years ago I built a Mirror dinghy in my garage and it was a cracker.  I built it from a kit supplied by Bell Woodworking Ltd, sponsored (obviously) by Mirror Group Newspapers.  Followed the instructions to the letter and had no problems apart from the sheer strake which split when trying to bend it to the curve - had to 'borrow' a drainpipe off the house to use as a steaming box.  It worked but the pipe was plastic and was never quite the same afterwards.  I can even remember the sail number - 23889 - I wonder where it is now.  :)  Your dinghy build looks great Ian, what class is it?

Then came the rudder,  mast, spars and rigging. No photos of these yet, will get some soon.

The hull is built of Robbins premium mahogany marine ply, keel, stem, transom and rubbing strakes are all Iroko and the internal thwarts, fin box and floor is of Douglas Fir.

The mast and spars are all Spruce.

Sail by Goatcher sails, rigging by me!

Derek,

Its not any particular class, just a traditional style lugsail dinghy designed by Ian Oughtred.

hi there Martin

Sadly, I dont have THE BOAT now  :o  - but I still have me Mrs  O0 - different house now - deliberately with a smaller garden for the Mrs  {-) {-) {-)

she was all but finished when I had to get rid of her THE BOAT that is  :)  No pics exist of the boat and I always consider taking pictures of a real vessel under construction at bit of a 'bad luck' thingie because not long after these pics were taken I lost my dad.   My dad is the one standing next to me and I was getting an ear bashing off him for putting one of the chocks in the wrong place on the hull.   Aye, about 8 years ago - the urge to build another boat came again, but, this time I bought an old derelict boat - plywood hull - that was in need of major rebuild - I was half way through the rebuild of that one - and someone told me I had emphysema and 2 knackered discs in me spine - so I wasnt to do anymore heavy lifting of any form.

So thank goodness - back to doing my models  :) :) :) :) :)

Ian the gunwales rubbing strakes seating are west african mahogany there are various knees etc which are oak and  iroko i had collected a fair bit of timber off various sites i'd worked on over the years amazing what you can get out of a skip! The mast and spars are douglas fir the jaws are oak the belay pins are asda rolling pins turned down to suit as are the parrel beads. all the running rigging i made splicing etc it's all holding so far, the standing rigging i had crimped up localy but this can be an horrendous price. the sails are made in falmouth by the chap that does the workingboat sails the best gaff maker there is but i've forgotten his name ::). trailer was off ebay. we're outside today rigging her pre season check i may put the sails up if the wind drops i've never seen her with them up from outside the boat i'll pop a pic on if i do.

bbdave - Another lovely 1:1.  I don't know the name of the sailmaker in Falmouth but Heards build the modern working boats (and other gaff rigged boats) and repair the old ones.  My only 1:1 now is a Fishing 16 which I bought second hand and am still in the process of refurbishing.  Just too old to indulge in 1:1 sailing boats any more.   :'(

Hi all,
No photo's, but I finished off and fitted out a four berth steel sailing cruiser some years ago. After about four years of not being sailed for one reason or another, I reluctantly sold her. And have since moved to Bridlington.

As it was such a lovely evening, after work today I took a walk down to Brid harbour. To my suprise there she was moored in the harbour.

Boatmadman: Just one word, wonderfull.
BBdave: trully wonderfull.

No bad intentions to you Boatmadman, but bb's "just floats my boat" as the saying goes.

If if really came down to it it would probably be a boat like yours, I would do though as I just dont have the time money or room for anything as big as Noomis.

Both very good examples of gararge boats, (or back garden in your case bb!).

Any recomendations where you can get plans for a sculler, or a skiff?
