Brushless Motors/ESC for MTB
« on: May 04, 2008, 12:36:06 pm »

I have a few MTB's to build in the future and due to weight I am thinking of using brushless motors, but as I have never used brushless before would like some advice for which set up to use.
The boats are an Italiari and John Haynes MTB's, both quite heavy so need to keep weight down, but want decent performance.
Any help welcome.

Yes, I'd be interested too!

Brushless motors has been spoken of many times on this forum but I'm still not convinced why or if they
are any better in certain boat applications. What are the basic advantages ( if there are any) of using
brushless over normal permanent magnet (DC) motors?

My main argument for & against them can ca seen here: http://www.pt-boat.com/brushless/brushless.html

Martin,
Those replies are very interesting.
The reason I want to go brushless is purely weight.
I have read the build threads on both models and both come up with the models are rather heavy for their size, so to cut down on overall weight I am going to go for single brushless motor on LiPo packs.
The same set up as in helicopters where weight is crucial.
I have never used them so thought I would start my research now to try and get as much info as possible.

Have a look at the video I recently posted in a thread a couple down from this, re:Huntsman circa 1970.

I assume that is the sort of performance you want. I have helicopters, and experimented with lipo's in this boat. The problem is, making sure you do not overdischarge, if the individual cells drop below 3v, the lipo is finished. With a helicopter, its easy to tell when the volts are dropping, not as easy in a boat. You would need a very good low voltage alarm, with enough time to get back to shore.
I changed a stock brushed motor to brushless ourunner  in a helicopter(the outer can turns, so you cant fit a water jacket). It was a big improvement, but can be expensive, you need a esc also, standard one will not work. They are far more efficient, no sparking brushes, but have not come across one yet specifically designed for boats, helis are light, and only fly for 10 mins on a 3 cell 11.1v lipo, so there is run time to consider also.
HS93 (forum member) has 2 brushless in the same boat as mine in the video, but I dont know if he has run it yet, maybe pm him for info

Yes that sort of performance would be fine, but after looking on eBay there are hundreds of the things and speed controllers.
As a first off I would just like to try a proven system, ie motor, ESC, Battery and prop so I have a baseline to work from.
Then will come the fun part with changing and "tuning" but always with an acceptable set up.
The motors and ESC's are very cheap on eBay from China so shouldn't be too costly.
Not even sure I will run LiPo's yet, but because of the weight saving I probably will.
Thanks so far.
