Very hot Viper20
« on: May 04, 2008, 06:34:48 pm »

Hi averyone; Right I have built a Springer two motors, servos and speed controllers which are Viper 20's I am using all this through a Laser 4 set up, I have one spare position on my RX as I think it is possibly for a 6 channel, My query both my speed controllers seem to be working through the one, when I turn one one they both come on, in the lake earlier Spring blew a 20 amp fuse, however the battery lead on the second still appeared to be hot, can anyone point me in the right direction, before my wooden wonder catches fire.

Heres where i think your going wrong as do a lot of people ive spoken to.

If you have just plugged the ESC in to the RX and you have a seperate RX power pack you NEED to remove the MIDDLE wire from the ESC.

hope it helps

The Vipers come supplied with a BEC circuit, this supplies power to the receiver from the main drive battery.
If you just plug in both ESC's and turn on you will have 2 BECc fighting each other as they are not EXACTLY the same.
Don't turn 1 on, if you have the fitted switch, they will both work, or if no switch remove 1 red wire from the receiver plug by gently levering up the small plastic "tongue" on the open side of the connector and pulling connector out.
Tape this up out of the way.

You only require 1 BEC so on the other speed controller remove and tape out of the way the RED wire

Mr Andy,
Just switch 1 on, they will BOTH work as the one that is switched on will supply the receiver and other ESC.
If you switch both on you usually hear a "pop" as the diode in the lower voltage Bec burns out.
You must be lucky!!

I dont know abour blowing a diode as one Viper was very very hot, so I remove the red wire of the RX plug and the other Viper then controlls the two, I will try that thank goodness I didn't glue the deck down earlier. ::)

Thanks for all your replies Andy. O0

Andy,
If they are the Vipers with a switch, just switch one on, leave the other switched off.
In this situation I usually fit a little piece of plasticard on the switch, held in by the screw and fitted around the switch to stop it being accidentally switched on.
Try just switching one on and see if it still gets hot.
There were a small percentage of new Vipers that suffered by an internal short, how do I know, yes one of mine melted!!
keep an eye on things!!
